Clemens Throws Gem, Sox Beat Indians in Game 2 (4/12/92)

The bad news was the Boston Red Sox offense scored a grand total of 4 runs in 18 innings against the Cleveland Indians, losing a game that their starter pitched a no-hitter. The good news was they at least won one of the games. Roger Clemens (1-1, 2.12 ERA) bounced back from his Opening Day turd to throw a complete game 2 hit shutout in the nightcap of today's doubleheader. The Indians managed just 2 hits and 2 runs in 18 innings yet won one of the games, go figure. Indians starter Scott Scudder was game but the Sox managed to scratch out three runs. Herm Winningham, Tony Pena and Scott Cooper drove in runs for the Red Sox while Clemens dominated on the mound. The Sox offense isn't lighting the world on fire but Clemens was Clemens to beat the Indians 3-0 at Cleveland Stadium.

Final Thoughts:

The offense is leaving much to be desired but the pitching was damn good in today's doubleheader. Matt Young allowed no hits in 8 innings and Clemens allowed no runs in 9. Usually doubleheaders are murder on bullpens but the Sox bullpen must have been bored to tears with the way Young and Clemens pitched. The Sox offense put up 3 runs but blew rallies in two different innings where they could have broken the game open. The Sox need to fix this real quick if they have any chance to competing with the Toronto Blue Jays this year. Clemens was awesome in Game 2 and hopefully the Sox can keep momentum going moving forward. The Sox now come home to face the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow afternoon. Frank Viola goes for the Sox up against Bob Milacki of the Indians at 2:05 PM at Fenway Park.
