Rose Shelled, Oakland A's Cruise (4/14/00)

Before the game it was announced that Gary Gaetti decided to retire. His surgically repaired knee didn't heal properly and he felt he was hurting the team by trying to gut through it. At least he was man enough to admit he had nothing left and walked away without further hurting the team. The Boston Red Sox replaced him with infielder Andy Sheets from Pawtucket.
                                                        So long Gary

As for the game, Brian Rose isn't doing himself any favors this season with back to back horrid starts. Today he failed to get out of the first inning as the Oakland A's pounded the Red Sox into submission with a 13-6 victory at Fenway Park.
"Brian Rose's pitching? No sir I don't like it"

The A's pounced on Rose right away. Rich Becker led the game off with a walk and Frank Menechino swatted a 2 run home run. Jason Giambi popped up but Olmedo Saenz, Matt Stairs and Ben Grieve all walked to load the bases. Miguel Tejada struck out but Eric Chavez cleared the bases with a grand slam. Just like that it was 6-0 Oakland. Sox manager Jimy Williams had seen enough and brought in John Wasdin to replace Rose. Sal Fasano struck out to end the inning, what a disaster. Jose Offerman singled off Oakland ace Kevin Appier to begin the bottom of the first. Trot Nixon looked at strike 3 but Brian Daubach walked. Nomar Garciaparra lofted a fly ball that advanced Offerman to third but Troy O'Leary flied out to end the inning.

The A's struck again in the top of the second inning. Becker flied out but Menechino doubled. Giambi walked and Saenz was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Stairs scored Menechino with a sac fly to make it 7-0 but Grieve flied out to end the inning. The Sox got no offense against Appier in the bottom of the second. Carl Everett struck out, Mike Stanley flied out and Jason Varitek struck out.

The A's threatened again in the top of the third. Tejada grounded out and Chavez struck out but Nomar booted a ground ball hit by Fasano. A wild pitch by Wasdin advanced Fasano to second but John recovered to get Becker to look at strike 3 to end the inning. The Sox finally answered in the bottom of the third inning. Wilton Veras singled but Offerman flied out. Nixon singled and both runners advanced on the Daubach ground out. Nomar atoned for his error by lashing a single that scored both runners, cutting the lead 7-2. O'Leary popped up but the Sox were on the board.

Wasdin had his best inning in the top of the fourth. Menechino struck out and both Giambi and Saenz struck out. The Sox wasted the momentum built up by not scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Everett grounded out and Stanley flied out. Varitek struck out to end the inning. That was their chance to get back into it but they failed.

Rob Stanifer took over for Wasdin in the top of the fifth. Stairs popped up but Grieve singled. Tejada struck out and Chavez flied out to end the inning. The Sox tried to claw back in the game an inning too late in the bottom of the fifth. Veras singled and Offerman singled him to third. Nixon hit a sac fly that scored Veras and Daubach singled. The Sox got a gift run when Menechino chucked a double-play ball into the stands, allowing Daubach to score and Nomar to advance to second, cutting the lead 7-4. O'Leary grounded out to end the inning but the 7 run lead was down to four.

The A's wasted no time getting the runs back in the top of the 6th. Fasano singled and Becker walked. Menechino struck out but Giambi belted a 3 run home run to put the A's up 10-4. Saenz grounded out and Stairs flied out to end the inning. Way to go Stanifer, a clean inning and the Sox would have had a chance to actually come back. The rejuvinated Appier struck out Everett and Stanley before allowing a single to Varitek. Veras grounded out to end the inning.

Stanfier threw up all over himself in the top of the 7th. Grieve singled and Ryan Christenson pinch ran for him. Tejada tripled him home and Chavez singled him in. Fasano struck out but Becker walked to chase Stanifer. Rich Garces came in and walked Menechino to load the bases and Giambi grounded out to second to score Oakland's 13th run. Saenz grounded out but it was now 13-4 and out of reach. The A's unloaded their bench in the bottom of the 7th. Jeremy Giambi replaced his brother, Becker moved to left field and Christenson stayed in at center. Mike Magnante replaced Appier as well. Offerman singled but Nixon flied out. Daubach singled to chase Magnante and Jeff Tam was brought in. Nomar singled in Offerman to make it 13-5 but O'Leary struck out and Everett grounded out to end the inning. Sad part was if Stanfier didn't gag, it would still be a game at 6-5.

Williams emptied the bench in the top of the eighth. Scott Hatteberg took over for Varitek. Jeff Frye took over for Offerman. Manny Alexander replaced Nomar and Darren Lewis replaced O'Leary. Garces returned to the hill and got Stairs to ground out. Christenson singled, Tejada struck out but Chavez singled. Fasano struck out to end the inning. The Sox mustered nothing in the bottom of the inning. Stanley lined out, Hatteberg struck out and Veras grounded out to end the inning.

Garces came back to finish the game. Becker struck out and Jorge Velandia pinch hit for Menechino, only to fly out. Giambi struck out to end the inning. Frye grounded out and Nixon gave the fans one last reason to cheer with a scintillating triple. Daubach hit a sac fly to bring home Nixon but Alexander flied out to end the game. What a disaster.

'
Jackass of the Night is easy: Brian Rose failed to make it out of the first inning, giving up 6 runs including a grand slam.

Mike Stanley was 0 for 4 with a strikeout. Scott Hatteberg was 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter. Rob Stanfier ended any hope for a comeback by giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.

The Ugly:

John Wasdin had mop up duty and allowed just 1 run in 3 1/3 innings.

Honorable Mention:

Darren Lewis played left field in the top of the ninth.

Final Thoughts:

So long Gaeiti. Also soon it will be time to say so long to Brian Rose if he continues to pitch like that. The Sox have plenty of options in Pawtucket and Trenton that could pitch better or equal to what Rose did today. Still, its only one game. There's always tomorrow.
