Crawford, Sox Shut Down Devil Rays (4/7/01)

On the same day the Boston College Eagles won the 2001 NCAA Hockey Championship, Paxton Crawford (1-0, 2.57 ERA) picked up where he lost last year by guiding the Boston Red Sox to a victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Crawford allowed just 2 runs in 7 outstanding innings to pick up the victory. A balanced offense with home runs by Trot Nixon and rookie Shea Hillenbrand ended up being all the runs the Sox would need. After blowing 2 saves to start the season, the Sox left no doubt in this one as they downed the Rays 6-2 at Fenway Park.

Old friend John Flaherty singled home Grieve to give the Rays the lead. Felix Martinez grounded out to first to end the inning with the Rays up 1-0.

Ramirez whiffed to end the inning.

Final Thoughts:

THAT'S what the Sox need out of Crawford this season. After Pedro Martinez, the Red Sox rotation is a big crap shoot including David Cone and Bret Saberhagen whenever those two return. Crawford and Tomo Ohka showed some promise down the stretch last season but someone has to step up this season. That was a good season debut by Crawford and he kept the Rays swinging and missing the whole game. The offense was a nice balanced attack and everyone except Grebeck joined in on the fun. Kudos to Hillenbrand for hitting his first career home run and really nothing went wrong all game. Beck looked good in his 2 innings of work so there's not much to complain about. Even when Crawford was on the ropes a little, he retired 13 in a row to end his day. Hopefully the Sox can get many more outings like this from Paxton and from the offense. The Sox look to sweep the Rays out of Fenway tomorrow afternoon when they send their ace Pedro Martinez to the mound against Albie Lopez of the Rays. The game begins at 1:10 PM at Fenway Park.
