Bats Fall Silent Jays Blank Sox (4/6/13)

After getting fairly decent run production the first four games of the season, the Boston Red Sox offense went to sleep in this one. Toronto Blue Jays starter JA Happ (1-0) and a host of relievers were virtually unhittable as the Jays took the middle game of the series 5-0 at Skydome.
                                                      Grumpy Red Sox fans

Jays starter JA Happ was sharp even if he didn't last long. Jacoby Ellsbury led the game off with a double and as sad as it sounds, that was the second to last hit of the game. Shane Victorino popped up as Dustin Pedroia struck out. Ellsbury swiped third but Mike Napoli looked at strike 3 to end the inning. Sox starter John Lackey (0-1) was game but later left with an injury. Jose Reyes led off the bottom of the first with a single, then promptly stole second.  Rajai Davis struck out and Melky Cabrera grounded out and Edwin Encarnarcion struck out to end the inning.

The Sox went quietly for most of the rest of the game. Will Middlebrooks flied out to open the top of the second inning. Jonny Gomes and David Ross grounded out to end the inning. Lackey hung tough in the bottom of the second. Adam Lind grounded out as both JP Arencibia and Mark DeRosa both struck out to end the inning.

The Sox mounted their only threat in the top of the third. Jackie Bradley Jr struck out but Pedro Ciriaco worked a walk. Ciriaco went to second on a wild pitch then to third when the catcher's throw went to centerfield. Unfortunately Ciriaco was thrown out at home on a force by Ellsbury. Ellsbury swiped second before Victorino walked. With 2 men on....Pedroia popped up to end the inning. The Jays threatened in the bottom of the third. Colby Rasmus struck out and Emilio Bonifacio grounded out. Reyes and Davis stroked back to back singles but Lackey whiffed Cabrera to end the inning.

Happ turned up the heat in the top of the fourth by striking out Napoli, Middlebrooks and Gomes in short order. The Jays struck first in the bottom of the fourth. Encarnarcion lined out but Lind singled. Arencibia then smacked a 2 run bomb to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. DeRosa grounded out and Rasmus struck out to end the inning but the damage was done.
                                              "No Lackey...NOOOOOOOOOO!"

Could the Sox answer in the top of the fifth? NO! THEY CRAPPED THEIR PANTS! Ross flied out, JBJ grounded out and Ciriaco lined out to end the inning. Bonifacio whiffed to begin the bottom of the second but in mid at-bat against Reyes, Lackey started clutching his forearm.....oh crap. Sure enough Lackey had to leave the game and in came ice cold Alfredo "The Vulture" Aceves. Reyes walked but Davis flied out. Cabrera singled but Encarnarcion grounded out to end the inning.
                                                      "Ughhhhhhh...I'm done"

Happ returned briefly for the top of the sixth. Ellsbury lined out but Victorino walked to chase Happ. Steve Delabar replaced Happ and the Sox failed badly at hit and run. Victorino was thrown out as Pedroia struck out....baseBAWFUL! The Jays iced the game in the bottom of the sixth. Lind walked but Arencibia struck out. Lind stole second as DeRosa walked. Rasmus then blasted a 3 run home run to put the game out of reach, 5-0.m Bonifacio flied out and Reyes struck out to end the inning.

Delabar returned for the top of the seventh. Napoli struck out, Middlebrooks flied out and Gomes grounded out to end the inning. Aceves returned for the bottom of the seventh and got Davis to fly out. Cabrera and Encarnarcion struck out to end the inning.

Aaron "Fruit" Loup got the ball in the top of the eighth. Ross and JBJ struck out then Ciriaco grounded out to end the inning. Aceves came back for the bottom of the eighth. Lind flied out but Arencibia doubled. DeRosa struck out and Rasmus grounded out to end the inning.

Sergio Santos came in to close the game out. Ellsbury grounded out and Victorino struck out but Pedroia singled. That was Boston's first hit since Ellsbury led off the game with a double. Napoli flied out to end the game. The Jays had won 5-0.

Jackass of the Night is a tough one considering they had no offense, but I'll go with Mike Napoli. He was 0 for 4 with a hat trick of strikeouts. Not exactly the production you're looking for with David Ortiz out.
                                                       Mike Napoli: Jackass

The Good:

None....the epitome of bawful.

The Bad:

Will Middlebrooks, Jonny Gomes and David Ross were all 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Jackie Bradley Jr was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves tossed 3 2/3 innings and gave up 3 runs, even if the Sox did score some runs, this would have put the game out of reach.

The Ugly:

Jacoby Ellsbury was just 1 for 4 but stole 2 bases. Shane Victorino was 0 for 2 but walked twice. Dustin Pedroia was just 1 for 4. Pedro Ciriaco was 0 for 2 but walked. John Lackey took the loss but was doing well before leaving with injury. He tossed 4 1/3 innings of 2 run ball allowing 5 hits and a walk while striking out 8.

Final Thoughts:

That was the epitome of bawful. Not a single player made the good list. A 2 hit shutout is not exactly what the Sox needed with Ortiz out. Worse is Lackey coming back from Tommy John surgery only to get hurt again. Well, if Lackey is hurt for an extended period, they got Allen "The Chosen One" Webster to turn to in Pawtucket. Tomorrow night Jon Lester (1-0) takes on RA Dickey looking to score some runs.
