Hughes got the ball in the top of the first and Daniel Nava grounded out to second to start. Mike Carp drew a walk but Dustin Pedroia flied out to right. David Ortiz took strike three to end the inning. Doubront struggled in the first inning although Brett Gardner grounded out to second to begin. Kevin Youkilis walked but Robinson Cano flied out to right. Mark Teixeira singled to left but Doubront froze Vernon Wells for strike three to end the inning, throwing 26 pitches in the process.
Mike Napoli singled to center to open the top of the second then took second on a wild pitch. He was stranded as Stephen "PU" Drew popped up to third, Jarrod Saltalamacchia flied out to right and Jose Iglesias whiffed to end the inning. Doubront ran into more trouble in the bottom of second by walking Jayson Nix to start. David Adams banged into a double play but Ichiro Suzuki singled to center and Chris Stewart walked. Gardner was retired on a squibber in front of the plate to end the inning but Felix had thrown 50 pitches.
The Sox struck first in the top of the third. Jackie Bradley Jr doubled to center and Nava singled him over to third. Carp doubled home Bradley to give the Sox the lead but Pedroia struck out swinging. Hughes intentionally walked Ortiz to set up the double play but...it failed. Napoli blasted a grand slam to right field to give the Sox a huge lead early. Drew and Saltalamacchia both went down swinging to end the inning but it was 5-0 Sox.
Could Doubront pitch the bottom of the third with a 5 run lead? YES! Youkilis took strike three to start but Cano singled to left. Teixeira took strike three and Wells grounded into a force to end the inning.
Iglesias grounded out to short to start the top of the fourth before JBJ flied out to right. Nava singled to right but Carp fanned to end the inning. The Yankees finally broke through in the bottom of the 4th as Jayson Nix and David Adams hit back to back singles to begin. Ichiro beat out a double play ball and Nix scored on a sac fly by Stewart. Doubront struck out Gardner to limit the damage but the Yankees were down 5-1.
Austin Romine took over for Stewart behind the plate as Pedroia beat out an infield single to start the top of the fifth inning. Ortiz took strike three and Yankees manager Joe Girardi felt that was enough from Hughes. Preson Claiborne came in and Napoli whiffed but PU Drew singled to center. Saltalamacchia watched strike three go by to end the inning. Doubront kicked into overdrive in the bottom of the 5th as he struck out Youk swinging to start. Cano grounded out to second and Teixeira whiffed to end the inning.
The Sox almost rallied in the top of the sixth although Iglesias grounded out to second to start. JBJ grounded out to first but Nava and Carp stroked back to back singles. Pedroia flied out to right to end the inning. Doubront finished strong in the bottom of the sixth as Wells popped up to second to start. Nix flied out to center but Adams singled to center. Ichiro flied out to right to end the inning. Great effort by Doubront to toss 6 innings of 1 run ball.
Adam Warren came in for the top of the seventh and Ortiz walked to start. Napoli beat out an infield single but Drew banged into a double play. Saltalamacchia whiffed to end the inning. Jonny Gomes replaced Carp in left field as Junichi Tazawa of The Orient Express replaced Doubront for the bottom of the 7th. Romine grounded out to third, Gardner flied out to left and Youk earned a hat trick by going down swinging to end the inning.
Boston pounded Warren in the top of the eighth inning as Iglesias singled to left to start. JBJ singled to right and Nava crushed a 400 foot moon shot to increase the lead. Gomes flied out to center, Pedroia lined out to first and Ortiz whiffed to end the inning with the Sox ahead 8-1.
Craig Breslow took over for the bottom of the 8th and Cano grounded out to second to start. Teixeira went down swinging and Wells grounded out to third to end the inning.
The Sox but the cherry on top in the top of the 9th. Napoli struck out but PU Drew crushed a 400 foot home run to right field. Saltalamacchia hit a ground rule double and Iglesias singled him home. JBJ doubled Jose to third and Nava scored Salty with a groundout to wrap up the scoring. Gomes grounded back to the mound to end the inning with the Sox ahead 11-1.
The other half of the Orient Express, Koji Uehara came in for the bottom of the ninth. Nix whiffed, Adams flied out and Ichiro struck out swinging to end the game. The Sox had won it 11-1.
Hero of the Night is Daniel Nava. He was 4 for 6 with 4 rbi's off a 3 run homer, 2 runs scored and even one of his outs was an rbi.
The Good:
Mike Carp was 2 for 3 with a walk, rbi and run scored.
Mike Napoli was 3 for 5 with a grand slam.
Stephen Drew was 2 for 5 with a home run.
Joe Iglesias was 2 for 5 with an rbi and 2 runs scored.
Jackie Bradley Jr was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored.
Felix Doubront got the win with 6 innings of 1 run ball with 6 strikeouts.
Junichi Tazawa pitched a scoreless 7th inning.
Craig Breslow pitched a scoreless 8th inning.
Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
The Bad:
Jonny Gomes was 0 for 2 at the plate.
The Ugly:
Dustin Pedroia was just 1 for 5.
David Ortiz was 0 for 3 but walked twice and scored a run.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia was just 1 for 5 but scored a run.
Final Thoughts:
Take that Yankee fans. After the fans took to Twitter to trash talk Boston, the Sox pounded Hughes and the Yankees while Doubront and the bullpen shut down the offense. If the Sox ever figure out how to hit left handed pitching, they would be one of the top teams in baseball because they seem to have no problem with righties. It was nice to see Doubront step up in Yankee Stadium and the trio of Tazawa. Breslow and Uehara have been almost unhittable this season. The win put the Sox at 34-23, 2 games in front of the Yankees. Game 3 of the series is tomorrow and Clay Buchholz (7-0) looks to defeat Hiroki Kuroda to send the Sox on their first off day in 3 weeks with momentum. The game begins at 7:10 PM at Yankee Stadium
