Sox Lose Kelly, Game (4/19/16)

Before the game it was announced that Noe Ramirez was demoted to Pawtucket and Heath Hembree was promoted. They are going to need Hembree big time with the bullpen taxed as it is through this point in the season.

It was a bad day for Boston sports. The Boston Celtics lost Game 2 of their first round NBA playoff series with the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Red Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Sox really needed Heath Hembree as Joe Kelly failed to make it out of the first inning. The bullpen lasted 8 innings but finally faltered in the end, losing to the Rays 3-0 at Fenway Park. Drew Smyly was unhittable for the Rays. How many runs did the Sox score Dean Wormer?
                                              "Boston Red Sox....Zero...point....zero...."

Joe Kelly took the mound in the top of the first inning and immediately walked Logan Forsythe. Logan Morrison grounded out to advance Forsythe to second. Evan Longoria walked. Corey Dickerson struck out and Kelly started grimacing in pain. Sox manager John Farrell bounded out of the dugout and immediately motioned for reliever Heath Hembree. Just like that Kelly's night was over after 23 pitches.
                                              "Goodbye Kelly"

Desmond Jennings struck out to end the inning. This was going to be a long night. Drew Smyly came out for the bottom of the first and struck out both Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia. Xander Bogaerts flied out to right to end the inning.

Brad Miller singled to start the top of the second. Steven Souza Jr flied out and Kevin Kiermaier struck out. Curt Casali struck out to end the inning. David Ortiz struck out to begin the bottom of the second. Hanley Ramirez flied out to right. Travis Shaw flied out to end the inning.

Forsythe flied out to begin the top of the third. Morrison flied out to center as Jackie Bradley Jr made a great diving catch. Longoria doubled and Dickerson popped up to end the inning. Chris Young walked to open the bottom of the third. Ryan Hanigan walked. Jackie Bradley Jr singled to load the bases but Mr. Mookie grounded into a force at home, no run was scored. Pedroia completed the futility by banging into a double play. Sadly that was the last Boston baserunner the rest of the game.
                                                   "Pedroia you suck"

Hembree returned for the top of the fourth inning. Jennings lined out to Pedroia and Miller struck out. Robbie Ross Jr started to warm up as it was announced Kelly left with a right shoulder impingement. Souza Jr made a boo-boo by swinging at a 3-0 pitch and popping up. Outstanding effort by Hembree who was only a 1-2 inning pitcher to go 3 1/3. Bogaerts continued his season long slump by grounding out to begin the bottom of the fourth. Ortiz whiffed and Ramirez struck out as well to end the inning.

Robbie Ross Jr took the mound for the top of the fifth. Kiermaier grounded out to Pedroia. Casali struck out but Forsythe singled. JBJ robbed Morrison at the wall to end the inning. Travis Shaw and Chris Young both whiffed to begin the bottom of the fifth. Hanigan flied out to end the inning.

Ross returned for the top of the 6th and remained tough. Longoria grounded out, Dickson struck out and Jennings grounded out. Smyly was unhittable though. In the bottom of the 6th, JBJ popped up, Betts struck out and Pedroia grounded out.

Ross tried to match Smyly the best he could in the top of the seventh. Miller and Souza Jr both struck out and Kiermaier grounded out to end the inning. Nobody was touching Smyly though. In the bottom of the seventh, Bogaerts and Ortiz struck out and Ramirez grounded out.

Junichi Tazawa took the mount for the top of the eighth and struck out the side wrapped around a Forsythe walk and steal. Neither team could put the bat on the ball. Shaw began the bottom of the eighth by striking out. Young popped up and Hanigan flied out. Smyly had pitched an 8 inning, 1 hit shutout.

Craig Kimbrel took over for the top of the 9th and Dickson flied out to begin. Jennings was hit with a pitch but Miller grounded into a force and Souza Jr flied out to end the inning. Could the Sox walkoff in the bottom of the 9th against Erasmo Ramirez? JBJ grounded out, Betts grounded out and Pedroia struck out to end the inning.

Matt Barnes came in for the top of the 10th and puked on himself. The light hitting Kevin Kiermaier broke the tie with a solo home run. Casali struck out but Forsythe doubled. Barnes got Morrison to fly out but Sox manager John Farrell had Longoria intentionally walked. He then brought in Tommy Layne to pitch to Dickerson but Rays manager Kevin Cash countered by pinch hitting Brandon Guyer. Shaw then booted a ground ball and the bases were loaded. Jennings then iced the game by hitting a ground rule double to give the Rays a 3-0 commanding lead. Miller walked as the boo birds rained down. Souza Jr flied out but the damage was done.
                                                         "Thanks a lot Barnes"

Alex Colome was brought in to save the game in the bottom of the 10th. The Sox went with a whimper. Bogaerts struck out, Ortiz grounded out and Ramirez struck out to end the game. The Rays had retired the last 23 Sox in a row...brutal.

Jackass of the Night is easy. Matt Barnes gave up the lead in the top of the 10th allowing the home run to Kiermaier.
Jackass of the Night: Matt Barnes

The Good:

Jackie Bradley was 1 for 3 with the Sox only hit of the game.

Heath Hembree pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Robbie Ross Jr pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief.

Junichi Tazawa tossed a scoreless inning.

Craig Kimbrel tossed a scoreless inning.

The Bad:

Mookie Betts was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Dustin Pedroia was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Xander Bogaerts was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Hanley Ramirez was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

David Ortiz was 0 for 4 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts.

Travis Shaw was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts.

The Ugly:

Chris Young was 0 for 2 but walked.

Ryan Hanigan was 0 for 2 but walked.

Joe Kelly lasted just 4 batters, retiring 2 and walking the 2 others.

Tommy Layne allowed both inherited runners to score but didn't allow any of his own.

Final Thoughts:

Holy moly this season is turning into a disaster already. Betts and Bogaerts are in hideous slumps and the offense can't get going. The bullpen is already overworked and the injury to Kelly doesn't help at all. If Kelly is out for a long period of time, we may see Henry Owens or Brian Johnson sooner rather than later. Getting Carson Smith and Eduardo Rodriguez back would help as well. This is getting ugly real quick and the offense will come around, but the starters need to stay healthy and get going. Thankfully its only April. Tomorrow night Rick Porcello (2-0) goes up against Chris Archer.
