Final Thoughts:
That was not a very good win but it was badly needed since not only the Rays lost but the New York Yankees beat the Oakland A's. The Sox are in a three way dance for the AL East title and it'll take a miracle to hold off the Rays pitching and Yankees offense. Even though the Sox won, Alex Cora AGAIN pulled a starter too early when Perez was done after 79 pitches. Why don't any of these guys say anything? Did Cora not see what happened to Blake Snell in the World Series? Granted this is only the regular season but what if the Sox are down in a playoff series and Perez is at 79 pitches but one run allowed through 5, is he gonna yank him then too? The bullpen did the job tonight but they can't keep doing this every single game. It'll be a miracle of Sawamura, Whitlock, Matt Barnes and Adam Ottavino are still effective come September. Still, there were some positives as Dalbec seems to be coming out of his season long funk and the team has gelled into one that's never truly out of a game. The Sox are 26-10 when they score first and 17-18 when they don't. The Sox still need to figure out a position player rotation because they can't possibly go down the stretch with everybody on the bench hitting under or near .200. Still all this squawking means the team has a chance this year and that's a major improvement over last year. The win improved the Sox to 43-28, 1/2 game ahead of the Rays for first place in the AL East. Tomorrow the Sox look to make it two in a row against the Royals when Nathan Eovaldi (7-3, 3.76 ERA) takes on Mike Minor of Kansas City. The game begins at 2:10 PM Eastern time at Kauffman Stadium.
