Sox Pick Up Lambright, Keller in Rule 5 Draft (12/8/21)

With MLB locked out there was no official Rule 5 draft this year....however.....the minor league rule 5 draft went off without a problem. In the first round, the Sox picked up 27 year old left handed pitcher Austin Lambright from the Kansas City Royals and took 27 year old right handed pitcher Brian Keller from the New York Yankees.

Lambright was drafted in the 10th round by the Royals who hasn't pitched since 2019 where he was with the Single A Wilmington Blue Rocks. Covid 19 wiped out the 2020 season and he was hurt all of last year. If nothing else he could be a depth piece for Greenville or Portland depending on if he's able to bounce back from the injury.

Keller was actually the Yankees THIRTY-NINTH round pick in 2016. Talk about never expecting him to be a star. Keller did manage to make it to Scranton where he was 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA last year. He'll start the season in Worcester and given the Sox recent history with basically raping the Yankees of talent (Adam Ottavino, Garrett Whitlock), this either will be a minor league move nobody remembers in a year or yet another case of Chaim Bloom outmaneuvering Brain Cashman. Time will tell on both these guys.
