Yankees Shut Down Sox (4/9/22)

Remember the first series of the year last year for the Boston Red Sox when they were completely humiliated by the Baltimore Orioles? Get ready because we're about to see a repeat courtesy of the New York Yankees. After the Yankees walked off with a victory yesterday, today they held the inept Sox to just 5 hits in this one. Just like yesterday, Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo both hit home runs and they just happened to be enough to win. The Yankees turned a 2-0 Sox lead into a 4-2 Yankees lead in the fifth and never looked back. The Sox had just two hits after the second inning and the Yankees made it two losses in a row with a 4-2 victory at Yankee Stadium.

Luis Severino got the ball to start the top of the first inning and Kike Hernandez grounded out to short to start. Rafael Devers took strike three and Xander Bogaerts went down hacking to end the inning. Nick Pivetta took the mound in the bottom of the first inning and Josh Donaldson lined out to first to begin. Aaron Judge grounded out to second and Anthony Rizzo popped up to third to end the inning.

The Sox struck first in the top of the second inning when JD Martinez singled in the hole at short to start. Alex Verdugo smashed his first home run of the season to put Boston on top. Trevor Story got his first hit with a double to center but Bobby Dalbec grounded out to third. Jackie Bradley Jr grounded out to first and Christian Vazquez grounded back to the mound to end the inning with the Sox ahead 2-0.
                                                      Verdugo hits one out

Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to short to start the bottom of the second before DJ LeMahieu struck out swinging. Joey Gallo ripped a base hit to left but was thrown out trying to stretch a double to end the inning.

Hernandez struck out swinging to open the top of the third before Devers doubled to left. Bogaerts took strike three and Martinez struck out swinging to end the inning. The Sox would have just one more hit the rest of the game. Gleyber Torres struck out swinging to begin the bottom of the third before Kyle Higashioka also went down hacking. Isiah Kiner grounded out to second to end the inning.

Verdugo got a base hit to left to open the top of the fourth and chase Severino from the game. Ron Marianccio came in to pitch and Story walked. The game turned right here when Dalbec struck out swinging, JBJ forced Story at second and Vazquez took strike three to end the inning. Naturally the Yankees pounced in the bottom of the fourth as Donaldson got a base hit to left to start before moving to second on the fly out to center by Judge. Rizzo hit another home run all the way to Jupiter to tie the game. Stanton grounded out to third but LeMahieu and Gallo worked back to back walks. Torres popped up to first to end the inning with the game tied 2-2.
Rizzo about to tie it up

Miguel Castro came in to pitch the top of the fifth inning and Hernandez popped up to short to start. Devers popped up to third but Bogaerts walked. Martinez grounded out to third to end the inning. Higashioka lined out to left to start the bottom of the fifth before Kiner flied out to right. Donaldson struck out swinging to end the inning.

Lucas Luetge came in to pitch the top of the sixth and Verdugo went down hacking to start. Story took strike three but Dalbec walked. JBJ lined out to center to end the inning. The Yankees took command in the bottom of the first as Judge walked to start. Rizzo popped up to first but Stanton hit another home run all the way to Babylon 5 to put the Yankees up for good. LeMahieu grounded back to the mound and Sox manager Alex Cora came out to get Pivetta. Once again he wouldn't let a starter go six innings and Pivetta was charged with 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings. Austin Davis got Gallo to fly out to left to end the inning with the Yankees up 4-2.
"Gimmie that ball....and...AND GET OUTTA HERE!" - Cora

Chad Green came in to pitch the top of the seventh and Vazquez flied out to center to start. Hernandez took strike three and Devers grounded out to third to end the inning. Hiro Sawamura came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and Torres flied out to center to start. Higashioka lined out to left and Kiner grounded out to third to end the inning.

Clay Holmes came in to pitch the top of the eighth and Bogaerts struck out swinging to start. Martinez grounded out to third but Verdugo walked. Story grounded out to short to end the inning. Phillips Valdez came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Donaldson struck out swinging to start. Judge grounded out to short and Rizzo grounded out to second to end the inning. The Sox held the Yankees to just 4 hits in the game but two of them just happened to be enough.

Aroldis Chapman came in to close out the top of the ninth with Aaron Hicks taking over for Stanton. Dalbec struck out on three pitches and Christian Arrroyo pinch hit for JBJ. Arroyo reached on a throwing error by Kiner but Vazquez flied out to center. Hernandez grounded out to short to end the game. The Yankees had won it 4-2.
                                                           Yankees win

Jackass of the Night is Christian Vazquez. He came up multiple times with men on base and went 0 for 4 with a strikeout.
                                                      Which one is the Jackass?

The Good:

Alex Verdugo was 2 for 3 with a walk and a 2 run homer.

Trevor Story was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Austin Davis got the final out of the sixth inning.

The Bad:

Kike Hernandez was 0 for 5 with 2 strikeouts.

Jackie Bradley Jr was 0 for 3.

Christian Arroyo was 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.

Nick Pivetta took the loss by allowing 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings while walking 3.

The Ugly:

Rafael Devers was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Xander Bogaerts was 0 for 3 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts but walked.

JD Martinez was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout but scored a run.

Bobby Dalbec was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts but walked.

Final Thoughts:

Two games in and fans are already sick of the Red Sox. The bad taste from the second half of last season never left and the team has played like it. For the second straight game the Sox took the lead but then proceeded to do almost nothing the rest of the game against the bullpen. The offense went completely asleep after Story's double following the Verdugo home run. Pivetta didn't even pitch that bad, he allowed just two mistakes but they happened to be hit for home runs. Once again Cora pulled a starter before the sixth inning was over and last year is proof that you can't do that every single game. I doubt Cora will ever learn his lesson so get used to it. This could be a sub .500 season if things keep up. The Yankees aren't that good anymore but they looked like the 2003 Yankees compared to the Red Sox. The Yankees complete the sweep tomorrow night on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. Jordan Montgomery likely throws a shutout while Tanner Houck takes the loss in his season debut. The beatdown begins at 7:05 PM at Yankee Stadium.
