Crawford, Sox Blank Mariners (6/12/22)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox got some bad news. Nathan Eovaldi was placed on the Injured List with a bad back and the Sox called up Kutter Crawford to make today's emergency  start against the Seattle Mariners. The Sox are already down Garrett Whitlock and now Eovaldi is down. Things aren't looking good for the Sox moving forward.

As for the game, even more bad news was the Sox got just 4 measly hits and 2 runs against the Seattle Mariners. Robbie Ray tossed a 7 inning shutout and the Sox had to put their scheduled starter on the Injured List. The good news was Kutter Crawford tossed 5 shutout innings filling in for Eovaldi and Rafael Devers blasted a 2 run home run in the eighth inning to provide the only runs of the game. The much maligned Boston bullpen tossed 4 scoreless innings with Tanner Houck slamming the door in the ninth inning. The ailing Red Sox pulled together to take 2 out of 3 from the Mariners including this game 2-0 at T-Mobile Park.

Ray got the ball in the top of the first inning and Rob Refsnyder struck out swinging to start. Rafael Devers struck out swinging and JD Martinez also went down hacking to end the inning. Crawford got the ball in the bottom of the first and Jesse Winker struck out looking to start. Ty France popped up to short and Julio Rodriguez was frozen for strike three to end the inning.

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the second as Xander Bogaerts doubled to left to start. Trevor Story flied out to right. Alex Verdugo grounded out to second to move Bogaerts to third but Bobby Dalbec grounded out to short to end the inning. JP Crawford hit one up the elevator shaft and Eugenio Suarez grounded out to third, but Adam Frazier walked. Frazier stole second but Abraham Toro took strike three to end the inning.

Christian Arroyo grounded back to the mound to start the top of the third and Kevin Plawecki popped up to short. Refsnyder grounded out to second to end the inning. Taylor Trammell walked to start the bottom of the third but Luis Torrens lined out to center. Winker struck out swinging but France walked. Rodriguez struck out swinging to end the inning.

Devers grounded out to second to start the top of the fourth and France dropped a pop up by Martinez for an error that put JD on second. Bogaerts popped up to second and Story flied out to left to end the inning. Crawford lined out to first to start the bottom of the fourth and Suarez grounded out to short. Frazier struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox did nothing in the top of the fifth as Verdugo grounded out to short to start. Dalbec flied out to center amd Arroyo grounded out to short to end the inning. Toro flied out to right to start the bottom of the fifth and Trammell grounded out to first. Torrens broke up the no-hitter with a base hit to right and Winker walked. France struck out swinging to end the inning. That was it for Crawford who 1 hit the Mariners for 5 innings in an emergency start, can't ask for more.
                                                           Crawford gets it done

The Sox did nothing in the top of the sixth as Plawecki grounded out to third to begin. Refsnyder grounded out to short but Devers was hit with a pitch. Martinez went down hacking to end the inning. Ryan Brasier came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth and Rodriguez grounded out to short to start. Crawford grounded out to third and Suarez took strike three to end the inning.

The Sox blew another rally in the top of the seventh as Bogaerts walked to start. Story flied out to center but Verdugo got a base hit to center to put runners at the corners. Dalbec banged into a double play to end the inning. Austin Davis came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and Frazier grounded out to first to start. Toro flied out to right but Dylan Moore pinch hit for Trammell. Moore walked to chase and Tyler Danish was brought in to face Torrens. Luis grounded out to short to end the inning.

Paul Sewald came in to pitch the top of the eighth with Jackie Bradley Jr pinch hitting for Arroyo. JBJ did what anyone in the stands could have done and that's look at strike three down the middle before Plawecki struck out swinging. Refsnyder was plunked and with 2 strikes on him...Devers bashed his 14th home run of the season to increase the lead. Martinez was hit with a pitch as well but Bogaerts lined out to third to end the inning with the Sox ahead 2-0.
                                                 Home run Devers

John Schreiber came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Winker grounded out to third to start. France lined out to right and Rodriguez took strike three to end the inning.

Sergio Romo came in to pitch the top of the ninth and Story flied out to center to start. Verdugo flied out to left and Dalbec grounded out to third to end the inning. Tanner Houck came in to close out the bottom of the ninth and Crawford grounded out to third to start. Suarez struck out swinging and Frazier popped up to short to end the game. The Sox only had 4 hits in the game but won it 2-0.
                                                          Sox win

Hero of the Night is Rafael Devers. His two run home run put the Sox up for good.
                                                            Devers The Hero

The Good:

JD Martinez was 1 for 3 with a hit by pitch.

Xander Bogaerts was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Kutter Crawford allowed just 1 hit in 5 shutout innings.

Ryan Brasier pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

Austin Davis got the first two outs of the seventh inning.

Tyler Danish got the win by getting the final out of the seventh inning.

John Schreiber pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Tanner Houck got the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bad:

Trevor Story was 0 for 4.

Bobby Dalbec was 0 for 4.

Christian Arroyo was 0 for 2.

Jackie Bradley Jr struck out as a pinch hitter.

Kevin Plawecki was 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

The Ugly:

Rob Refsnyder was 0 for 3 with a strikeout but was hit with a pitch and scored a run.

Alex Verdugo was just 1 for 4.

Final Thoughts:

The Sox are in trouble down 2 starters and half the offense asleep but they still managed to win today and 8 out of 10 on this road trip. Getting 5 shutout innings from Kutter Crawford can only be classified as a miracle plus the bullpen didn't gag the game away. The offense was asleep again but Devers delivered when it counted. If Houck is the closer moving forward, that's great but who's going to start with two guys down? The good news is Josh Taylor will come off the Injured List eventually and he can team with John Schreiber to be a potent 1-2 late inning punch. Guess it's going to be Josh Winckowski and Connor Seabold time in terms of starters moving forward. God help us. The win improved the Sox to 32-29, good for fourth place in the AL East. After an off-day tomorrow the Sox are back in action Tuesday night at home against the Oakland A's. Nick Pivetta (5-5, 3.78 ERA) takes the mound against Jared Koenig of Oakland. The game begins at 7:10 PM at Fenway Park.
