Whitlock, Sox Down Yankees (6/9/23)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made some expected roster moves. After a social media barrage from liberals, Matt Dermody was designated for assignment. Not only that, the Sox front office showed they had no canons by apologizing for bringing him up. In his place the Sox called up Joe Jacques from Worcester to make his season debut. Also Adam Duvall was finally removed from the Injured List and Enmanuel Valdez was sent down to Worcester. Duvall looked like a developing fan favorite before he got hurt, hopefully he can pick up where he left off.

As for the game, who saw THAT coming? Garrett Whitlock (3-2, 4.78) pitched well against the team that drafted him, outbuilding Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees. Whitlock held the high powered Yankees to one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. Triston Casas opened the saloon in the top of the third with an rbi single and Coke's personal babayaga Rafael Devers homered in the 6th. Josh Donaldson got one back with a moonshot but Enrique Hernandez provided the insurance run with a blast. The Yankees got a run in the bottom of the seventh but the bullpen held. Kenley Jansen slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox beat the Yankees 3-2 at Yankee Stadium.

The Lock says he's the Hero

The Ugly:

Adam Duvall was 0 for 3 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts but walked.

Kike Hernandez was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout but the one hit was a home run.

Final Thoughts:

The Sox desperately needed a good Whitlock start and they got it. It would be a lot better with Pivetta starting and Whitlock in the bullpen but for now it worked out. The Sox bats were held in check but they did just enough to win. Duvall coming back should help moving forward once he shakes off the rust. Yoshida did nothing tonight but can't expect him to mash every night. Verdugo took his benching like a man and came back to get a couple of hits. Its always a good thing when you beat the Yankees and the Sox desperately need to win this series if they have any hope closing the gap in the AL East. Beating Cole is a big step in the right direction but they have to keep the momentum going. The win improved the Sox to 32-32, 14 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East. The Sox look to make it two in a row against the Yankees when they send Tanner Houck (3-5) to the mound against Domingo German of New York. The game begins at 7:35 PM at Yankee Stadium.
