Angels Walk Off Sox in 10 Innings (6/24/25)

If last night's collapse against the Los Angeles Angels wasn't bad enough, the Boston Red Sox topped it tonight. The game was a pitcher's duel for most of the night with Garrett Crochet and Ty Anderson.  The Sox struck first in the top of the third when Nick Eaton hit a sacrifice fly to score Marcelo Mayer. After Crochet left, Greg Weissert served a one out home run to Christian Moore to tie the game. Plunged into extra innings, Mayer got a base hit to score Ceddanne Rafaela to put the Sox ahead. In the bottom of the tenth, Moore hit a backbreaking two run bomb to end the game off Justin Wilson (2-1, 2.39 ERA). The Angels had stunned the Sox 3-2 in 10 innings at Angel Stadium.
                                                             "Dammit"

Carlos Narvaez grounded out to short to end the inning. Crochet got the ball in the bottom of the first and Zach Neto struck out swinging to start. Luis Rengifo grounded out to short and Mike Trout took strike three to end the inning.

Jarren Duran grounded out to short to start the top of the second before Trevor Story did the same. Taylor Ward made a great catch to rob Ceddanne Rafaela of a double to end the inning. Ward walked to start the bottom of the second but Logan O'Hoppe grounded into a double play. Jo Adell walked but Gustavo Campero struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox struck first in the top of the third as Marcelo Mayer tripled into the right field corner and Nate Eaton hit a sac fly to right to score him. Refsnyder took strike three and Anthony lined out to center to end the inning with Boston up 1-0.

                                                               YERRR OUT!

Story grounded out to third to start the top of the fifth before Rafaela grounded out to first. Mayer got a base hit to right and Eaton walked to chase Anderson. Hunter Strickland came in to pitch the top of the seventh and Duran doubled to right to start. Story grounded out to third, Rafaela grounded out to short and Mayer took strike three to end the inning. What a waste. Crochet returned for one final inning in the bottom of the seventh and Trout walked to start. Ward struck out swinging but O'Hoppe forced Trout at second. Adell got a base hit in the hole at second and Travis d'Arnaud pinch hit for Campero. d'Arnaud popped up to first to end the inning. Crochet was outstanding, tossing 7 shutout innings allowing just 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 10.
                                                         Great start by Crochet

Scott Kingery came in for d'Arnaud and Sam Bachman came in to pitch the top of the eighth. Abraham "El" Toro pinch hit for Eaton and popped up to short and Wilyer Abreu pinch hit for Refsnyder. Abreu took strike three and Anthony grounded out to short to end the inning. Greg Weissert came in to blow the game in the bottom of the eighth with David Hamilton now in for Toro. Wade Jr flied out to center but Moore hit a home run into the Pacific Ocean to tie the game. Neto got a base hit to left but Rengifo struck out swinging. Neto got caught stealing second to end the inning with the game tied 1-1.
                                                              Tie game

Narvaez flied out to left but Duran walked. Story popped up to second and Rafaela flied out to right to end the inning. Another waste. Aroldis Chapman came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and Trout singled off his glove to start. Ward and O'Hoppe both went down hacking but Adell walked. Kingery struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox broke through in the top of the tenth with Reid Detmers now on the mound and Rafaela starting at second base. Mayer got a base hit to center to score Ceddanne but Hamilton grounded into a double play. Abreu got a base hit to right but Anthony took strike three to end the inning with Boston ahead 2-1.
                                                       Mayer drives in a run

Justin Wilson came in to close out the bottom of the tenth with Kingery starting at second base. Wade Jr struck out swinging but Moore once again crushed a home run out of Earth's orbit to win the game for the Angels. Brutal way to lose 3-2 in 10 innings.
                                                              Angels win

Jackass of The Night is Justin Wilson. He allowed the two run walkoff home run to Moore in the tenth inning.
                                                                 Jackass Wilson

The Ugly:

Rob Refsnyder was 0 for 2 with a strikeout but walked.

Romy Gonzalez was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts but stole a base.

Ceddanne Rafaela was 0 for 4 but scored a run.

Final Thoughts:

Another kick to the gonads courtesy of the Angels. Once again the lack of offense doomed the Sox as Garrett Crochet's seven shutout innings and a Chapman scoreless ninth inning wasn't enough. Cora not moving runners over is annoying but there was a certain someone who used to be on the Sox, that's currently in San Francisco that might have helped drive in a run. Not only did Crochet and Chapman's efforts go to waste, Mayer had a nice breakout game going 3 for 4 with what should have been the winning rbi. Anthony is only hitting .114 but his time will come. Anyone that remembers Dustin Pedroia in 2006 knows that Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was Syracuse. Still, the team is heading down the toilet for the fourth straight year and this could have entirely been avoided if they didn't tell Rafael Devers to play out of position. If they don't replace him at the trade deadline, what are we doing here? All in all it was another bad loss the Sox could ill afford. The loss dropped the Sox to 40-41, 6 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. The Sox look to salvage the series with the Angels tomorrow when "Big" Dick Fitts takes on Yusei Kikuchi of Los Angeles at 4:05 PM Eastern time at Angel Stadium.
