Indians Drop Sox, Streak Reaches 5 (4/6/11)

Another game, another loss for the Boston Red Sox as the season continues to get out of hand before it really starts. Tonight it was Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-1, 5.40 ERA) who got the short end of the stick against the Cleveland Indians. Dice K allowed 3 runs in just 5 innings and the Sox offense was again dormant in the clutch. The Sox bullpen was lit up for 5 runs as Dennys Reyes, Dan Wheeler and Tim Wakefield got tagged again. This all led to the Sox 5th straight loss and an Indians 8-4 win at Jacobs Field.
                                                      "WIN SOME GAMES FOR ONCE!"

Indians starter Mitch Talbot faced Jacoby Ellsbury to open the game and struck him out swinging. Carl Crawford stepped in and singled off of Talbot's glove. Dustin Pedroia struck out swinging bringing up Adrian Gonzalez. Crawford stole second cleanly but it didn't matter because Gonzalez struck out swinging to end the inning. Dice K took the mound and promptly gave up a leadoff single to right by Michael Brantley. Asdrubal Cabrera flied out to left bringing up Sin Soo Choo. The Sox pitching staff continued to give up long balls as Choo blasted a homer to centerfield to give the Indians the lead just like that. Carlos Santana flied out to center but Travis Haffner worked a 10 pitch walk. Orlando Cabrera was then hit by a pitch as Red Sox Nation groaned. Dice K Disease was striking early but it ended when Travis Buck flied out to left to end the ining with the Indians up 2-0.
                                                          Indians strike first

The Sox rallied in the top of the second although Kevin Youkilis grounded out to short to start. David Ortiz and JD Drew stroked back to back singles before Jason Varitek walked to load the bases. Marco Scutaro hit a Texas Leaguer to score Ortiz and Ellsbury scored Drew with a groundout to first to tie the game. Crawford lined out to third to end the inning with the game tied 2-2.
                                                       Ortiz scores a run

Unfortunately, Dice K couldn't keep the Indians at bay in the bottom of the second. Matt Laporta led off with a single to center but Jack Hannahan flied out to center. Brantley walked and Asdrubal Cabrera singled home Laporta to give Cleveland the lead back. Choo grounded into a double play to end the inning but the Indians re-took the lead 3-2.
                                                            Indians take the lead

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the third as Pedroia was hit by a pitch to start. Gonzalez doubled him to third and it looked like the Sox would tie the game. Then the Sox inability to hit in the clutch struck again as Youkilis whiffed and Ortiz lined out softly to short. Drew watched strike three go by to end the inning but Talbot was now up to 72 pitches after 3 innings. Dice K made short work of the Indians in the bottom of the third by striking out Santana looking on 3 pitches to start. He struck out Hafner swinging in 4 and getting Orlando Cabrera to fly out to left in 3 to end the inning.

Varitek led off the top of the fourth by flying out to center then Scutaro struck out on swinging on 9 pitches. Ellsbury took strike three to end the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Buck led off with a fly out to center and Laporta hit one up the elevator shaft. Hannahan walked but Brantley grounded out to first to end the inning as Dice K looked to be cruising.

Crawford led off the inning with a walk and promptly stole second. Pedroia moved him over to third with a ground out and Gonzalez was intentionally walked. That was it for Talbot as Chad Durbin came in to pitch to Youkilis. Youk's slump continued as he struck out swinging. Indians manager Manny Acta replaced Durbin with Rafael Perez and Ortiz grounded out to first to end the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Dice K got Asdrubal Cabrera and Choo to ground out to Pedroia then the wheels almost fell off. Santana and Haffner stroked back to back singles after it looked to have been a strike 3 call on Santana. Luckily Orlando Cabrera grounded out to second to end the inning but that was it for Dice K. He threw 96 pitches
                                                                Dice K battled

Perez cruised in the top of the sixth as Drew struck out swinging to start. Varitek flied out to right and Scutaro took strike three to end the inning. The Indians put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning thanks to some boneheaded baseball by the Sox. Dennys Reyes relieved Dice K and plunked Buck and Laporta to start. Hannahan walked to load the bases with nobody out. Sox manager Terry Francona had seen enough and sent for Dan Wheeler. Dan got Brantley to hit a grounder to Youkilis who stepped on third and fired home. Varitek touched the plate but had forgotten its not a force play and Buck was safe with another run. Asdrubal Cabrera cleared the bases with a towering shot to right field to put the game out of reach. Choo grounded out to second to end the inning but the game was decided 7-2.
"He's safe you dummy, ya forgot to tag him!" - Dale Scott

Frank Hermann came in to pitch the top of the seventh and the Sox tried to come back. Ellsbury took strike three but Crawford singled in the hole at short. Pedroia flied out to right but Gonzalez smashed his first home run of the season to cut the lead. How important was the home run by Cabrera now? Youkilis popped up to first to end the inning with the Sox down 7-4.
                                                  Adrian's first Sox home run

Tim Wakefield held the fort in the bottom of the seventh as Hafner struck out swinging to start. Orlando Cabrera  popped up to first and Buck grounded out to second to end the inning.

Tony Sipp came in for the top of the eighth and Ortiz hit one up the elevator shaft to start. Mike Cameron pinch hit for Drew and flied out to center. Jed Lowrie pinch hit for Varitek and flied out to left to end the inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia took over behind the plate for the bottom of the eighth and Laporta settled matters with a home run to Jupiter to wrap up the scoring. Hannahan grounded out to second, Brantley struck out swinging and Asdrubal Cabrera flied out to left to end the inning with the Indians up 8-4.
                                                     Wakefield gives up a run

Vinnie Pestano came in to close out the top of the ninth and the Sox went quietly. Scutaro flied out to right, Ellsbury grounded out to second and Crawford lined out to left to end the game. The Sox dropped to 0-5 with an 8-4 loss.
                                                             Sox lose again

Jackass of the Night is Dan Wheeler. Yes, Reyes loaded the bases and Varitek's mental error didn't help but the three run homer by Cabrera was the difference in the game.
                                                          Jackass Wheeler

The Good:

Carl Crawford was 2 for 4 with a walk, 2 stolen bases and a run scored.

Adrian Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a walk and a 2 run homer.

JD Drew was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

The Bad:

Kevin Youkilis was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Mike Cameron was 0 for 1 at the plate.

Jed Lowrie was 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.

Dennis Reyes was charged with 3 runs after hitting 2 batters and walking one.

The Ugly:

Jacoby Ellsbury was 0 for 5 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts but walked.

Dustin Pedroia was 0 for 3 with a strikeout but was hit with a pitch.

David Ortiz was just 1 for 4 but scored a run.

Jason Varitek was 0 for 2 with a boneheaded play at home but walked.

Marco Scutaro was just 1 for 4 with 2 strikeouts but drove in a run.

Daisuke Matsuzaka took the loss but allowed just 3 runs in 5 innings. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks.

Tim Wakefield allowed a run in two innings of work.

Honorable Mention:

Jarrod Saltalamacchia caught the bottom of the eighth.

Final Thoughts:

In the first five games, the Red Sox as a pitching staff had given up 15 home runs while the offense were even worse with runners on base. All 5 starters have been defeated and none of them looked particularly good. Its only April but after last year's injury plagued year left a bad taste in the fans' collective mouths, this was NOT the way to win rapport. Especially since this was touted by radio jocks as the "best team evah". That Varitek blunder was little league, you'd think he'd know better to tag the damn runner. Not that it mattered since Cabrera was going to hit a home run to Sri Lanka anyway but at least it would have been a more interesting game. The losses are piling up and the Sox have to win eventually...right?
The Sox look to avoid their second straight sweep when Jon Lester (0-1) looks to improve on his Opening Day outing when he takes on Fausto Carmona of the Indians tomorrow afternoon. The game begins at 1:05 PM Eastern time at Progressive Field.

Rangers Sweep Sox in a Stunning Display of Power (4/3/11)

So much for the revamped Boston Red Sox offense. On a day where the Texas Rangers once again hit four home runs, the Sox were held to just 5 hits and one measly run by Matt Harrison and the Rangers bullpen. Clay Buchholz (0-1, 5.68 ERA) held the Rangers to just 5 hits in 6 1/3 innings but four of them were home runs. The Sox as a whole had only had 5 hits as the Texas Rangers outslugged and outpitched the Sox in a shocking 3 game sweep. The Rangers knocked off the Sox 5-1 at Arlington Park.
                                                         "This year sucks!"

Harrison got the ball in the top of the first inning and Jacoby Ellsbury to grounded out to second to start. Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez both struck out swinging to end the inning. Ian Kinsler led the bottom of the first off with a walk but was erased on the Michael Young double play. Josh Hamilton took strike three to end the inning.

Kevin Youkilis led off the second by taking strike three but David Ortiz followed with a single into the shift. Jed Lowrie flied out to right but Carl Crawford singled to keft. With 2 men on, Saltalamacchia's slump continued by striking out looking to end the inning. The Rangers struck first in the bottom of the second as Adrian Beltre grounded out to short to start. Nelson Cruz flied out to right but old friend David Murphy hit a home run all the way to Lagos, Nigeria to give the Rangers the lead. Mike Napoli flied out to right to end the inning but the Sox were already behind 1-0.
                                                         Murphy gives Texas the lead

Darnell McDonald led off the third by striking out swinging then Ellsbury grounded back to the mound. Pedroia managed a single in the hole at short but Gonzalez struck out swinging to end the inning. The Rangers struck again in the bottom of the third although Mitch Moreland lined out to right to start. Andres Blanco struck out swinging but Kinsler hit his third home run in his third straight game to increase the lead. Young grounded out to short to end the inning with the Rangers ahead 2-0.
                                                           Kinsler with another home run

It didn't get any better in the top of the fourth inning for the Sox. Youkilis flied out to center, Ortiz grounded out to third and Lowrie popped up to right in foul territory to end the inning. Buchholz rebounded in the bottom of the fourth by first striking out Hamilton swinging to start. Beltre and Cruz both flied out to left to end the inning.

The Sox woes continued in the top of the fifth as Crawford struck out looking to start. Saltalamacchia reached first on an error by Harrison only for McDonald to hit into a double play to end the inning. The Rangers tagged Buchholz again in the bottom of the fifth although Murphy grounded out to second to start. Napoli hit yet another home run for the Rangers to give the Rangers a commanding lead. Moreland grounded out to first and Blanco grounded out to short to end the inning but it was 3-0 Rangers.
                                                       Napoli hits a home run

The Sox went quietly in the top of the sixth as Ellsbury grounded out to second to start. Pedroia grounded out to to third and Gonzalez grounded back to the mound to end the inning. Kinsler led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk but eagle eye'd Buchholz picked him off. Young singled but was erased on the Hamilton double play to end the inning.

The Sox offense woke up briefly in the top of the seventh. Youkilis led off with a walk and Ortiz singled him to second. Lowrie grounded into a force that erased Ortiz but put Youk at third. Crawford got his first rbi when he singled home Youk to cut the deficit. Saltalamacchia flied out to right but Darnell McDonald worked a walk to load the bases. With a chance to tie the game or more......Ellsbury struck out swinging to end the inning with the Sox down 3-1.
                                                                Youk scores the only run

It was the Sox last gasp as it turned out, the Rangers capitalized on their dodged bullet by firing away at the Sox in the bottom of the seventh. Beltre led off by popping up to short but Cruz joined Kinsler as he homered for the third straight day to finish off Buchholz. He went 6 1/3 and allowed 4 solo shots as the portly Dennys Reyes took over. Murphy singled to right but was picked off by an alert Reyes. Napoli singled in the hole at short but Moreland struck out swinging to end the inning with the Rangers ahead 4-1.
                                                       Not good enough, Buchholz

Old friend Darren Oliver came in for the top of the eighth and Pedroia flied out to left to start. Gonzalez grounded out to third and Youkilis struck out looking to end the inning. Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon made his season debut in the bottom of the eighth and was promptly pounded. Blanco doubled, Kinsler was hit and Young doubled Blanco home. Papelbon intentionally walked Hamilton to load the bases and everyone in Boston facepalmed. Fortunately the Papelbon of old showed up as he struck out Beltre, Cruz and Murphy all swinging to end the inning with the Rangers up 5-1.
                                                              Rangers score another run

Nefali Feliz came in to close out the top of the ninth and the Sox went quietly. Ortiz and Lowrie flied out to center and Crawford grounded out to first to end the game. The Rangers had swept the Sox out of Texas with a 5-1 win.
                                                                Rangers win

Jackass of the Night is Jacoby Ellsbury. He was 0 for 4 including a bases loaded, rally killing strikeout.
                                                 Jacoby Jackass swings and misses

The Good:

David Ortiz was 2 for 4.

Carl Crawford was 2 for 4 with an rbi.

Dennys Reyes got the final two outs of the seventh inning.

The Bad:

Adrian Gonzalez was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Jed Lowrie was 0 for 4.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

Clay Buchholz took the loss by allowing 4 solo home runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Jonathan Papelbon allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Ugly:

Dustin Pedroia was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Kevin Youkilis was 0 for 3 but walked and scored a run.

Darnell McDonald was 0 for 2 with a strikeout but walked.

Final Thoughts:

Not the way the Red Sox wanted to start their season after the disappointing end to 2010. Yes the Texas Rangers are the real deal but this was total domination by the Rangers. It wasn't just winning, the Rangers swept the Sox 3 straight with 11 home runs and lights out starting pitching (in the last 2 games anyway). Ian Kinsler would set the Major League record for home runs if he played Boston every day. Buchholz didn't even pitch that bad overall but he couldn't escape the longball. The offense wasn't completely useless but once Ellsbury struck out, it was all downhill from there. There's plenty of time to turn the ship around but getting swept on opening weekend leaves a bad taste in the mouths of the fans. After an off-day tomorrow, the Sox are back in action Tuesday night in Cleveland. Josh Beckett makes his season debut against Josh Tomlin of the Indians at 8:05 PM Eastern time at Progressive Field.

Lester, Bard Routed by Texas on Opening Day (4/1/11)

The 2011 season got off on the wrong foot for the Boston Red Sox. Jon Lester got dropkicked around by the Texas Rangers who knocked him out in the sixth inning after allowing 5 runs. The new look Red Sox offense did manage to score four runs at that point then tied the game with a David Ortiz home run in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately, Daniel Bard faltered in the bottom of the eighth as the AL Champion Texas Rangers took Opening Day 9-5 at Arlington Park.
                                                 "DAMMIT BARD!!!"

CJ Wilson took the mound for Texas in the top of the first inning. Jacoby Ellsbury led the game off by reaching second on an error by centerfielder Nelson Cruz when Julio Borbon ran into him during a routine fly. Dustin Pedroia moved Ellsbury over to third with a sac fly bringing up new addition Carl Crawford who lined out to short. Kevin Youkilis returned from his torn thumb suffered last August by doubling home Ellsbury. This brought up slugger Adrian Gonzalez who singled home Youk but was thrown out at second base trying to advance. Good start for the Sox as they led 2-0.
                                                   Yerrr out!

Jon Lester took the mound for the bottom of the first. Ian Kinsler led off the inning with a blast to left as the raucous crowd went wild. Elvis Andrus beat out a bobbled throw by Youkilis but the Sox recovered when shortstop Marco Scutaro turned a double play ball hit by Josh Hamilton. This brought up last year's Sox hero Adrian Beltre who grounded out to second to end the inning with the Rangers down 2-1.
                                                     Kinsler goes yard

David Ortiz grounded back to the mound to start the top of the second while Mike Cameron and Jared Saltalamacchia both struck out to end the inning. The Rangers struck again in the bottom of the second although Lester got Michael Young to ground out to third to start. Nelson Cruz made up for his earlier blunder by homering to left to tie the game. Lester rebounded to get Mike Napoli on interference and Yorrvit Torrealba on a ground out to third to end the inning but the game was tied 2-2.
                                                                Cruz ties it up

The Sox struck back in the top of the third as Marco Scutaro led off with a groundout to first. Ellsbury reached second on a double to the right field wall and Pedroia singled him to third. Crawford then struck out swinging badly but Youkilis worked a walk on Wilson's 50th pitch of the game to load the bases. Gonzalez worked the count full then singled home Ellsbury and Pedroia (Youk took third). Gonzalez stole second base but Ortiz grounded out to end the rally. The Sox had taken the lead 4-2.
                                                        Sox take the lead

Lester made the Rangers beat the ball in the dirt in the bottom of the third as Borbon grounded back to the mound to start. Kinsler and Andrus both grounded out to short to end the inning.

Wilson cruised in the top of the fourth as Cameron grounded out to second to start. Saltalamacchia flied out to deep center and Scutaro grounded back to the mound to end the inning. The Rangers fought back in the bottom of the fourth as Hamilton popped up to left to start. Beltre singled to left but Young flied out to right. Cruz sliced a single to right and Napoli cleared the bases with a 3 run bomb to Central America to give the Rangers the lead. Torrealba hit a squibber in front of the mound to end the inning with the Rangers ahead 5-4.
                                                          Rangers take the lead

Ellsbury led off the top of the fifth with a base hit to right but Pedroia struck out swinging. Ellsbury stole second but Crawford again whiffed badly. Youkilis hit a shot to left but Hamilton ran it down to end the inning.

Lester hit Borbon to start the bottom of the fifth but Julio was out at second on a force by Kinsler. Lester then hit Andrus but got Hamilton to fly out to center. Beltre flied out to right with no damage done to end the inning.

Gonzalez grounded out to third to start the top of the sixth and Ortiz struck out swinging. Cameron walked as Rangers manager Frank Washington lifted Wilson for Mark Lowe. Saltalamacchia grounded out meekly to the pitcher to end the frame.  Lester opened the bottom of the sixth by getting Young to ground out but Cruz walked. Napoli singled to right to send Lester to the showers. Matt Albers (who won the final pitching job with a brilliant spring training) relieved Lester and got Torrealba to ground into a fielder's choice. Borbon walked to load the bases but Albers got Kinsler to ground out to end the threat. Lester lasted just 5 1/3 innings and allowed 5 runs, not his best stuff.
                                                       Bye bye Lester

Arthur Rhodes took the mound for the top of the seventh and got Scutaro to ground out to short. Ellsbiry walked and took second on a passed ball, but Pedroia popped up to right. Crawford struck out swinging for the third time in the game to end the frame. Albers returned for the bottom of the seventh briefly to get Andrus to ground out to second but was lifted for the portly Dennys Reyes. Reyes walked Hamilton on 4 straight pitches and Terry Francona took him out for ex Tampa Bay Ray Dan Wheeler. Wheeler got Beltre to fly out to right and Pedroia made a diving catch on Michael Young to save a base hit as Wheeler escaped the inning.
                                                     Look at this guy

Old friend Darren Oliver replaced Rhodes for the top of the eighth and got Youkilis to ground out to short to start. Gonzalez grounded out to second but Ortiz blasted a home run to dead center to tie the game. Cameron flied out to center to end the inning but the game was tied 5-5
                                                    Tie game

Daniel Bard took the mound for the bottom of the eighth and took a beating. Cruz flied out to Cameron but Napoli walked and Torrealba singled to right. Former Sox outfielder David Murphy pinch hit for Julio Borbon and doubled home Napoli and Torrealba. Bard bounced back to whiff Kinsler but allowed Andrus to double home Murphy to put the game on ice. Beltre doubled in Andrus to ice the game as Sox manager Terry Francona finally lifted Bard for Tim Wakefield. Beltre walked but Young flied out to right to end the inning with the Rangers up 9-5.
                                                             Bard gets rocked

Neftali Feliz came in to pitch the top of the ninth and the Sox went quietly. Saltalamacchia swung at air to start before Scutaro grounded out to first. Ellsbury swung and missed at strike three to end the game. The Rangers had won Opening Day 9-5.
                                                                Rangers win

Jackass of the Night is Daniel Bard. He turned a tie game into a four run deficit in just 2/3 of an inning.
                                                           Jackass Bard

The Good:

Jacoby Ellsbury was 2 for 4 with a walk and 2 runs scored.

Adrian Gonzalez was 2 for 4 with 3 rbis.

Matt Albers tossed a full scoreless inning.

Tim Wakefield got the final out of the eighth inning.

Carl Crawford was 0 for 4 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Marco Scutaro was 0 for 4.

Jon Lester got rocked for 5 runs in just 5 1/3 innings without striking out anyone.

Dennys Reyes walked the only guy he faced.

The Ugly:

Dustin Pedroia was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout but scored a run.

David Ortiz was just 1 for 4 but the one hit was a home run.

Mike Cameron was 0 for 3 but walked.

Final Thoughts:

The Rangers are the defending AL Champs and showed why today. Their offense was relentless and knocked around two pretty good pitchers in Lester and Bard. Adrian Gonzalez looked good in his Sox debut while Carl Crawford looked like dog poo. Hopefully it was just April jitters for Crawford because if he can hit like he did in Tampa, the Sox have a 1-6 better than anyone, including the New York Yankees and Rangers. Jacoby Ellsbury staying healthy would be nice too. The bullpen didn't look too impressive either but that can be fixed during the season. The Rangers are a damn good team and if they're the standard on what a team should be, the Sox have some work to do to catch up with them talent wise. The Sox look to bounce back tomorrow night as John Lackey makes his season debut for the Sox against Colby Lewis of Texas. The game begins at 10:05 PM Eastern time at Arlington Park.
