Young, Pilgrims Drop Orioles (5/17/01)

It took the Boston Pilgrims' best pitcher to do it but the Pilgrims finally broke their losing streak thanks to Cyclone Young (4-2, 3.19 ERA). Young was masterful, pitching a complete game 10 hitter allowing just 2 runs to the Baltimore Orioles. The Pigrims defense once again threw the ball all over the field to commit 4 errors, but Young did his part by striking out 9 batters. Offensively the Pilgrims were led by Young himself who went 3 for 4 with a run batted in. Buck Freeman knocked in two big runs and Jimmy Collins scored two runs. It all added up to a 4-2 victory over the Orioles 4-2 at the Huntington Avenue Grounds.

Hero of the Night is Cyclone Young. He threw a complete game 10 hitter allowing just 2 runs. He was also 3 for 4 with an rbi and a run scored.

The Good:

Charlie Hemphill was 1 for 3 with a walk and 3 runs scored.

Jimmy Collins was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

Buck Freeman was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base.

Fred Mitchell walked and scored a run.

The Bad:

Tommy Dowd was 0 for 5 with a strikeout.

Hobe Ferris was 0 for 4.

Lou Criger was 0 for 4.

The Ugly:

Charlie Jones was 0 for 3 but walked, stole a base and drove in a run.

Freddy Parent was 0 for 2 with 2 errors but drew a walk.

Final Thoughts:

Errors are going to kill this team in the long run and I think Pilgrims manager Jimmy Collins knows it. He benched Parent after making two more errors and its a good thing Young was on his strikeout game, who knows how many runs would have scored if John McGraw's club could make more contact. Young was great but he can't pitch every day, someone else is going to have to step up on the mound and more importantly in the field. How many more errors is this team going to make this year in close games?  The good news was the team continues to hit well, Young included. Freeman and Collins carried the offense and hopefully that can continue. The win improved the Pilgrims to 8-10, 6.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League. The Pilgrims look to take the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon. Win Kellum goes for the Pilgrims up against Jack Dunn of the Orioles. Orioles Outslug Pilgrims (4/27/01)

Two games and two losses for the new American League's Boston Pilgrims. John McGraw's Baltimore Orioles were relentless in their second game in front of their home crowd albeit a much smaller one than yesterday. Only 6,000 showed up to watch the Orioles beat around Boston's best pitcher, Cyclone Young (0-1, 12.71 ERA). Young simply didn't have it as he allowed 10 runs off 9 hits and 5 walks before being lifted by Pilgrims manager Jimmy Collins in the sixth inning. His replacement Fred Mitchell was tagged for two runs himself as the Orioles pounded out 11 hits and 10 runs. Meanwhile the Pilgrims managed to score just six runs against Baltimore starter Harry Howell. McGraw himself had two hits and three runs scored and former Brooklyn star Wilbert Robinson called a good game by Howell. The Sox committed two errors as well and it all added up to a 12-6 beating by the Orioles at Oriole Park.

Jackass of the Night is Cyclone Young. He allowed 10 runs in just 5 1/3 innings while going 0 for 2 at the plate.

The Good:

Jimmy Collins was 2 for 4 with a walk, 3 rbis and a run scored.

The Bad:

Lou Criger was 0 for 4.

Fred Mitchell allowed 2 runs in 2 1/3 innings.

The Ugly:

Tommy Dowd was 0 for 5 but scored a run.

Larry McLean was just 1 for 5 with 2 strikeouts.

Freddy Parent was just 1 for 5 but drove in 2 runs.

Hobe Ferris was just 1 for 4 with an error but walked and drove in a run.

Final Thoughts:

Just like the first game, the Baltimore Orioles couldn't miss against the Pilgrims' pitchers. No matter if its a 25 year old rookie in Win Kellum or a veteran like Cyclone Young, the Orioles scored 22 runs in two games against Boston. The Pilgrims scored six of their own in today's game against Howell but it wasn't nearly enough. Jim Jackson and Bill Keister drove in three runs apiece to match Boston's entire output. There should be better days ahead but things are definitely not starting out well for the Pilgrims defensively and on the mound. Its only April and there's a lot of baseball left to be played.....if the league doesn't fold that is. The games that were rained out will be made up at a later date so for now the Orioles are 2-0 against the Pilgrims. Boston continues to hit the road and the next stop is in Philadelphia to play the Athletics. 31 year old former Cleveland Spider George Cuppy gets the start for Boston against Bill Bernhard of the Athletics. The game begins at 1:00 PM at Columbia Park.
