Rangers Crush Kimbrel, Sox (7/5/16)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made a roster move. Ryan Hanigan was removed from the Disabled List and Christian Vazquez was sent down to Pawtucket to make room for him. Vazquez has struggled since early June and Sox brass feel Hanigan is a better option right now. Vazquez will be back eventually.

As for the game, David Price (8-6, 4.64 ERA) just can't seem to catch a break. Tonight he was beaten by the Texas Rangers on both sides of the ball. Shin-Soo Choo hit the first pitch of the game out of the yard and the Rangers put up three runs total against Price. The Sox could only muster two runs against Rangers starter AJ Griffin and the Texas bullpen. The key to the game was Craig "The Buzzard" Kimbrel who got hammered for four runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away. The Sox could do nothing after and the Rangers won the game 7-2 at Fenway Park.
                                                        Randy Quaid is angry again

Things went bad right from the start as Shin-Soo Choo hit the first pitch of the game all the way into the Charles River to put the Rangers up. Ian Desmond singled to right and promptly stole second. Price caught Prince Fielder looking but Elvis Andrus hit a sac fly to center to score Desmond. Rougned Odor grounded out to second to end the inning with the Rangers ahead 2-0.

That was it for Kimbrel as Heath Hembree came in to mop up the rest of the inning. Mazara grounded out to first and Desmond was retired on a squibber in front of the plate. Beltre lined out to center to end the inning with the Rangers up 7-2.
                                                                Chirinos ices it

                                                                   Rangers win

Jackass of The Night is Craig Kimbrel. He allowed 4 runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
                                                          Nice going, Jackass

The Good:

Mookie Betts was 2 for 4 with a walk.

Dustin Pedroia was 2 for 4 with a walk.

Hanley Ramirez was 1 for 2 with 2 walks, a stolen base and a hit by pitch.

Travis Shaw was 2 for 4.

One of the few times the losing pitcher ends up on the Good list but David Price tossed 8 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 10.

Heath Hembree pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bad:

None

The Ugly:

Xander Bogaerts was 0 for 4 but walked and drove in a run.

David Ortiz was just 1 for 5.

Jackie Bradley Jr was just 1 for 5 with a strikeout but the one hit was a home run.

Brock Holt was just 1 for 4 but was hit with a pitch and scored a run.

Sandy Leon was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Final Thoughts:

That loss was bawful all around. Even before the Kimbrel implosion the Sox left 13 men on base going into the ninth inning. It all goes back to the first inning when Choo hit the home run on the first pitch and the Sox had two runners to start against Griffin and couldn't get anyone in. Price pitched his ass off but the bats failed to pick him up. All these guys are going to be on the All-Star team but are just 7 games over .500 after this loss, lack of clutch hitting is a big reason why. Hopefully the Sox can turn it around in a hurry because they don't need to fall further behind in an AL East race they still have a chance to win. The Sox can do some damage coming out of the All-Star break and see what they can do at the trade deadline if they don't fall apart. The less said of this game, the better. The loss dropped the Sox to 45-38, 3 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East. The Sox look to bounce back tomorrow night against the Rangers when Steven Wright (9-5) takes on Martin Perez of Texas. The game begins at 7:10 PM at Fenway Park.
