The Sox wasted no time scoring first in the top of the first. Mr. Mookie Betts led the game off with a solo home run to center on a 3-2 count. Dustin Pedroia worked a walk but Xander Bogaerts was rung up for strike three. Andrew Benintendi drew a walk but Mitch Moreland whiffed on a high fastball. Chris Young grounded out but Peralta had thrown 30 pitches and the Sox led 1-0.
Could Pomeranz pitch with the lead? NO! He got his ass handed to him in the bottom of the first. Drew walked Jonathan Villar and gave up a 2 run blast to Eric Thames to put Milwaukee in front. Ryan Braun doubled and old pal Travis Shaw singled him in. Domingo Santana flied out for the first out but Manny Pina beat out a double play ball. Keyon Broxton then blasted a 2 run bomb to give the Brewers a 5-1 lead. Orlando Arcia struck out to end the inning but the rout was on.
The Sox mustered nothing in the top of the second inning. Leon popped up, Josh Rutledge struck out and Pomeranz whiffed as well to end the inning. The Brewers almost pounded Pomeranz in the bottom of the inning. Peralta flied out but Villar walked. Thames singled but Villar was thrown out at third foolishly trying to steal. Braun grounded out to end the inning.
The Sox tried to fight back in the top of the third when Mr. Mookie singled to start only for Pedroia to bang into a double play. Bogaerts lined out to end the inning. Pomeranz retired Shaw on a dribbler in front of the plate to start the bottom of the third. Santana and Pena grounded out to end the inning.
The Sox did nothing in the top of the fourth. Benny The Kid lined out and Moreland grounded out but Young walked. Leon grounded out to end the inning, The Sox puked on themselves in the bottom of the fourth. Broxton singled and tried to steal second, only for Leon to literally eat the cover off th ball allowing Broxton to reach third. Arcia singled him home to increase the lead. The Sox recovered to turn a strike em out, throw em out double play on Arcia and Peralta. Villar lined out to end the inning with the Brewers up 6-1.
The Sox roared back in the top of the fifth inning. Rutledge grounded out as Chase d'Arnaud pinch hit for Pomeranz and singled. Mr. Mookie doubled home Chase and Pedroia doubled Mookie home to cut the lead in half. Carlos Torres replaced Peralta and Pedroia moved to third on the Bogaerts ground out. Benny The Kid doubled home Dustin and moved to third on a wild pitch. Moreland walked to put the tying run on....only Young grounded out to end the inning. It was nice to see them show some life for once to trail 6-4.
Fernando Abad came on in the bottom of the fifth and did his job. Thames grounded out, Braun popped up and Shaw popped up to end the inning.
Could the Sox tie it up in the top of the sixth? Hell no. Leon grounded out and Rutledge struck out as Jackie Bradley Jr pinch hit for Abad....and popped up. The Brewers put the game away in the bottom of the sixth against Heath Hembree. Santana singled but Pina flied out. Broxton was hit with a pitch and Arcia singled home Santana. Nick Franklin pinch hit for Torres and doubled home both runners to chase the incompetent Hembree. Robby Scott came in and Villar singled. Villar was then foolishly picked off by the alert Scott. Thames grounded out to end the inning with the Rays up 9-4.
Jacob Barnes took over in the top of the seventh and the Sox tagged him. Mr. Mookie drew a walk but Pedroia grounded into a double play. Bogaerts doubled and Benny The Kid singled him home. How big was the double play now? Moreland struck out to end the inning with the Sox down 9-5. Ben Taylor came on to pitch the bottom of the seventh and crapped his pants. Braun flied out but Shaw walked and Santana singled. Pina popped up but Broxton tripled home both runners to put the game completely out of reach. Arcia flied out to end the inning with the Brewers up 11-5.
Jhan Martinez replaced Barnes in the top of the eighth and the Sox rallied. Young struck out and Leon flied out, but Rutledge singled. Deven Marrero pinch hit for Taylor and singled. Mr. Mookie doubled home Rutledge and moved Marrero to third. Pedroia walked to load the bases. Brewers manager Craig Counsell brought in Corey Knebel to face Bogaerts and Xander whiffed on 3 pitches to end the inning. The Sox were down 11-7 but could have benefited from a Bogaerts single. Joe Kelly took over for the bottom of the eighth as Jesus Aguilar pinch hit for Knebel. Aguilar grounded out, Villar lined out and Thames popped up to end the inning,
Oliver Drake got the ball in the top of the ninth as Benny The Kid greeted him with a single. Benintendi was erased n the Moreland force. Young and Leon struck out to end the game. The Brewers had bashed the Sox 11-7.
Jackass of the Night is Drew Pomeranz. The incompetent starter allowed 6 runs in just 4 innings and put the Sox in too big of a hole to climb out of.
The Good:
Mookie Betts was 4 for 4 with a walk, a home run and 4 total rbi's.
Dustin Pedroia was 1 for 3 with 2 walks, an rbi and a run scored.
Andrew Benintendi was 3 for 4 with a walk.
Chase d'Arnaud singled and scored in his only appearance.
Deven Marrero singled and scored in his only appearance.
Fernando Abad pitched a scoreless 5th inning.
Robby Scott got the final two outs of the 6th.
Joe Kelly pitched a scoreless 8th inning.
The Bad:
Sandy Leon was 0 for 5 with a strikeout and an error.
Jackie Bradley Jr failed in his only plate appearance.
Heath Hembree got hammered for 3 runs in just 1/3 of an inning.
Ben Taylor got rocked for 2 runs in the seventh inning
The Ugly:
Xander Bogaerts was just 1 for 5 but scored a run.
Mitch Moreland was 0 for 4 with a walk.
Chris Young was 0 for 4 but walked.
Josh Rutledge was just 1 for 4 but scored a run.
Final Thoughts:
I liked the offense but the pitching stunk. Just another sign of a potential lost season when they finally score some runs but suddenly can't pitch. This was Heath Hembree's worst outing of the season and it cost the Sox the win partially. The problem with Pomeranz goes back to last year, he's a two pitch pitcher. If one of them isn't working, the batters will tee off on the other. Tonight was no exception. The loss of Tyler Thornburg and Carson Smith also bit them as Ben Taylor has to pitch meaningful innings and batters are starting to figure him out. There's nothing else to say really, they miss all the injured guys, Pablo Sandoval and Brock Holt included. The loss dropped the Sox to 17-15 on the season, 4 1/2 games out of first place. Kyle Kendrick gets the start tomorrow night opposite Chase Anderson....god help us.
