Look who got the last laugh Price
Michael "Pine tar" Pineda got the ball in the top of the first inning. Mr. Mookie Betts led the game off with an infield single but was thrown out at second trying to steal. So much for that rally. Andrew Benintendi flied out to right but Xander Bogaerts beat out an infield single by sliding into first base. Mitch Moreland walked but Hanley Ramirez struck out to end the inning.
David Price got the ball in the bottom of the first inning and got Brett Gardner to fly out to center to begin. Aaron Hicks hit a broken bat pop up to Moreland but Aaron Judge and Matt Holliday worked back to back walks. Starlin Castro whiffed on a 95 mph fastball to end the inning.
The Sox did nothing in the top of the second as Jackie Bradley Jr grounded out to second, Josh Rutledge struck out and Pablo Sandoval whiffed to end the inning. Price was getting squeezed by the home plate umpire and he promptly walked Gary Sanchez. Didi Gregorious blooped a single to center but Chase Headley popped up. Chris Carter popped up but Gardner stroked a single to center to score Sanchez. Hicks whiffed to end the inning but the damage was done, 1-0 Yankees.
1-0 may as well be 100 with the way Pineda pitched in the top of the third inning. Christian Vazquez lined out to right, Mr. Mookie flied out to center and Benny The Kid struck out to end the inning. The Sox couldn't get a hit if their lives depended on it meanwhile the Yankees got theirs at will in the bottom of the inning. Judge singled and Holliday walked. Castro flied out but Judge moved to third. Sanchez iced the game with a 3 run bomb to left to give the Yankees a 4 run lead. Gregorius and Headley stroked back to back singles. Carter absolutely crushed a line drive....right to Sandoval at third. Gardner grounded out to end the inning but Price had thrown 75 pitches to get through 3 innings.
The Sox got a gift run when the Yankees pooped their pants in the top of the fourth inning. Headley threw a ground ball hit by Bogaerts away for an error, then Moreland singled. Naturally Ramirez banged into a double play but Xander went to third. JBJ didn't have to do anything as a passed ball by Sanchez allowed Bogaerts to score the run. JBJ managed to draw a walk but Rutledge struck out to end the inning. Still, the Sox got one and trailed 4-1.
Price kept the deficit to 3 in the bottom of the fourth as Hicks grounded out, Judge looked at strike three and Holliday flied out to end the inning.
The Sox did nothing in the top of the fifth as Sandoval, Vazquez and Mr. Mookie all grounded out in short order. The Yankees struck back in the bottom of the fifth as Castro singled and Sanchez blasted another 2 run homer to make it 6-1 New York. Sanchez was now 4 for 7 with 4 homers off Price. Gregorius grounded out, Headley whiffed and Carter grounded out but the damage was done. Price left the game after allowing 6 runs in 5 innings.
Naturally the Sox failed to respond in the top of the sixth inning. Benny The Kid flied out, Bogaerts watched strike three go by and Moreland grounded out to end the inning. Fernando Abad got the call in the bottom of the sixth inning as Gardner grounded out. Hicks flied out but Judge singled. Holliday walked and Castro singled home Judge to make it 7-1 and chase the incompetent Abad. Brandon Workman was brought in and got Sanchez to pop up to end the inning.
Ramirez finally did something in the top of the seventh as he singled, but too little too late. JBJ whiffed, Rutledge whiffed and Sandoval grounded out to end the inning. The Sox had mustered one unearned run off Sabbathia and Pineda in 15 innings while the Yankees feasted on Porcello and Price for 12 runs. Workman returned for the bottom of the seventh and struck out Gregorius. Headley grounded out and Carter flied out to end the inning.
Adam Warren came on to pitch the top of the eighth but it didn't matter if it was Warren Harding on the mound, the Sox weren't going to score. Vazquez struck out, Mr. Mookie flied out and Benny The Kid grounded out to end the inning. Meanwhile the Yankees teed off on Workman as Gardner homered to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Hicks and Judge hit back to back singles and Holliday was plunked to load the bases. Castro beat out a double play ball to score Hicks but Sanchez struck out. Romine flied out to end the inning. The Yankees led 9-1 and 17-1 total the past two games. That's domination.
Giovany Gallegos came in to pitch the top of the ninth and Bogaerts popped up. Moreland struck out but somehow Ramirez walked. JBJ struck out but the ball got away, allowing Ramirez to reach third and JBJ first. Rutledge walked to load the bases but Sandoval watched strike three go by to end the game. The Yankees had won 9-1.
Jackass of the Night is David Price. Mr "I don't want to be here" crapped his pants by allowing Gary Sanchez to smack him around, allowing 6 total runs in just 5 innings.
The Good:
Mitch Moreland was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Hanley Ramirez was 1 for 3 with a walk.
The Bad:
Andrew Benintendi was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.
Pablo Sandoval was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.
Christian Vazquez was 0 for 3 with a strikeout.
Fernando Abad allowed a run in just 2/3 of an inning.
The Ugly:
Mookie Betts was just 1 for 4.
Xander Bogaerts was just 1 for 4 but scored a run.
Jackie Bradley Jr was 0 for 3 but walked.
Josh Rutledge was 0 for 3 but walked.
Brandon Workman had mop up duty, allowing 2 runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Final Thoughts:
Just as it seemed the Sox had all the momentum after Tuesday night, the Yankees showed why they are the team to beat in the American League by emphatically pounding the Red Sox the past two days. They knocked 2 of the Sox' supposed 3 aces around and shut down the punchless attack. It may be time to get Mookie Betts out of the leadoff spot until he heats up again because the Sox can't get untracked if he's flailing away and failing to get on base. Price putting his foot in his mouth then gagging on the mound wasn't a good look either. Things seem to be spiraling down the toilet so the Sox need to wake up in a hurry on their next home stand. Tomorrow night the Sox return home to Fenway Park for a 3 game set with the Detroit Tigers. Brian Johnson (2-0, 2.57 ERA) looks to be the stopper against Jordan Zimmerman at 7:10 PM.
