As for the game, the Boston Red Sox haven't been dominated by the New York Yankees like this in over 15 years. Yes the 2012, 2014 and 2015 teams didn't have good records, but this year's Sox team is expected to contend for the division yet simply cannot beat the Yankees. After scoring 1 run the previous night in 16 innings, they scored exactly zero runs in the first game of today's double-header, getting blanked by CC Sabathia and the Yankees bullpen, who have now pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings against the Red Sox. When all was said and done, the lifeless Sox dropped Game 1 by a score of 3-0 at Fenway Park. How many runs did the Sox score Dean Wormer?
The much maligned Rick Porcello (4-12, 4.60 ERA) got the ball in the top of the first inning. Brett Gardner hit a comebacker right to Rick to start. Chase Headley singled to right but Porcello whiffed both Aaron Judge and Matt Holliday to end the inning. CC Sabathia got the ball in the bottom of the first and the Sox pissed away one of their only chances. Mr. Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts drew back to back walks to open the game, but Andrew Benintendi head to beat out a double play ball. With runners at the corners, a fly ball would have put the Sox in front.....instead Chris Young banged into a double play to end the inning. That set the tone for the ineptitude the rest of the way.
Porcello had a rocky top of the second inning although Didi Gregorious struck out to start. Clint Frazier singled but Austin Romine looked at strike three. Ji-Man Choi singled to right but Ronald Torreyes flied out to center to end the inning. The Sox continued to blow hard in the bottom of the second inning. Sam Travis led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on the Jackie Bradley Jr ground out.....only to be thrown out at home by a mile on a comebacker to Sabathia by Deven Marrero. Marrero swiped second and Leon walked, but Tzu-Wei Lin grounded out to end the inning. Another big chance wasted.
Porcello got Gardner to ground out to start the top of the third but Headley singled again. Rick got Judge to bang into a double play to end the inning. Sabathia began to dominate in the bottom of the third inning as Mr. Mookie grounded out to third, Bogaerts popped up to second and Benny The Kid popped up to second to end the inning.
The Yankees pounced in the top of the fourth inning although Holliday struck out to start. Gregorious singled but Frazier hit a routine grounder to Bogaerts. Xander then shockingly picked the ball up and punted it over the head of Lin at second for a huge error. Romine singled to load the bases and Choi hit a sac fly to left to score Gregorious. That should have been the third out, instead Torreyes singled home Frazier. Gardner was plunked to re-load the bases but Headley grounded out to end the inning. What should have been a harmless inning turned into a 2-0 Yankees lead thanks to Bogaerts.
Could the Sox answer in the bottom of the fourth? NO! Young popped up to third but Travis walked and took second on a wild pitch. JBJ whiffed and Marrero grounded out to end the inning.
More Yankees luck continued in the top of the fifth inning. Judge flied out to right and Holliday flied out to left, but Gregorious hit a piece of crap 290 foot Pesky Pole special to increase the lead. Frazier grounded out but it was 3-0 Yankees, game over.
Once again the Sox pissed a chance to get back in the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning. Leon walked but was erased on the Lin force. Mr. Mookie singled to bring the tying run to the plate....but Bogaerts lined out to left. Benny The Kid struck out to end the inning, pathetic.
Porcello returned for the top of the sixth inning and struck out Romine to start. Choi hit a ground rule double and moved to third on the Torreyes ground out. Gardner grounded out to short to end the inning. If it wasn't for the dimensions of Fenway Park and Bogaerts' ineptitude, Porcello very well could have been pitching a shut-out, he deserved a better fate.
Sabathia cruised in the bottom of the sixth as Young grounded out to start. Travis popped to second and JBJ struck out to end the inning.
Austin Maddox got the call in the top of the seventh inning and got Headley to fly out to right to begin. Judge singled but Holliday popped up to short. Gregorious also popped up to end the inning. Tyler Clippard replaced Sabathia for the bottom of the seventh and Sox manager John Farrell countered by pinch hitting the returning Brock Holt for Marrero. Holt responded with an infield single to third but Leon popped up to first. Dustin Pedroia pinch hit for Lin but grounded out, moving Holt to second. Mr. Mookie grounded out to second to end the inning, another waste.
Maddox returned for the top of the eighth inning and Frazier greeted him with a single. Romine flied out to right and Choi struck out. Torreyes singled and that was it for Maddox. Fernando Abad came in to pitch to Gardner and struck him out to end the inning.
Chad Green replaced Clippard in the bottom of the eighth and got Bogaerts to pop up before striking out Benny The Kid. Moreland and Travis drew back to back walks to bring the tying run to the plate but guess what JBJ did....he struck out to end the inning.
Brandon Workman got the call to pitch the top of the ninth and struck out Headley to start. Judge flied out to right and Holliday grounded out to end the inning. Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman came in to close it out in the bottom of the ninth. Holt grounded out to short as Hanley Ramirez pinch hit for Leon....only to strike out. Pedroia singled but Mr. Mookie grounded out to end the game. The Yankees had won it 3-0 and had held the Sox to 1 run in 25 innings, PATHETIC!
Jackass of The Night is Xander Bogaerts. He was 0 for 3 at the plate and his error led to the Yankees taking the lead.
The Good:
Mitch Moreland pinch hit for Chris Young and walked.
Sam Travis was 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
Brock Holt was 1 for 2 as a pinch hitter.
Sandy Leon walked twice in 3 plate appearances.
Dustin Pedroia was 1 for 2 as a pinch hitter.
One of the rare times the losing pitcher ends up on the good list. Rick Porcello pitched well with the only earned run allowed coming on a piece of crap home run that would have been an out in Oakland.
Austin Maddox pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Fernando Abad retired the only man he faced.
Brandon Workman pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
The Bad:
Andrew Benintendi was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.
Chris Young was 0 for 3.
Jackie Bradley Jr was 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.
Deven Marrero was 0 for 2.
Hanley Ramirez struck out as a pinch hitter.
Tzu-Wei Lin was 0 for 2.
The Ugly:
Mookie Betts was just 1 for 4 with a walk.
Final Thoughts:
I hate to admit it but this team sucks against the Yankees this year. I mean they're not even competitive. First Masahiro Tanaka throws an 86 pitch complete game shut-out in April, then last month they scored 1 run in 2 games off Luis Severino and Sabathia, then they score 1 run last night in 16 innings and now this. For those scoring at home, that's 5 games, 52 innings and TWO runs scored. You read it right, 5 games, 52 innings, 2 runs scored. Amazing what happens when the Yankees bullpen doesn't throw up on themselves. Tonight the Sox complete the ineptitude in Game 2 of the double-header. David Price (4-2, 3.91 ERA) matches up with Masahiro Tanaka.
