Off-Day News: MLB Draft Coverage (6/3/19)

Tonight was the first two rounds of the Major League Baseball draft and the sins of Dave Dombrowski haunted the Boston Red Sox as they had to forfeit their first round pick for being forty million dollars over the Luxury Tax and forced to pick 43rd overall. The Baltimore Orioles took catcher Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick while the Kansas City Royals drafted shortstop Bobby Witt Jr second. When the Red Sox finally got to choose, they took Arizona University junior shortstop Cameron Cannon. He was chosen in the 21st round out of high school by Arizona in 2016 but chose to go to Arizona. Now he's decided to leave Arizona after hitting .397 with 8 home runs for the Wildcats. The Sox better hope anyone chosen between picks 32 and 42 don't turn into superstars because if Dombrowski didn't extend Chris Sale, Steve Pearce and Nathan Eovaldi, the Sox would have been able to pick one of those guys. As it is, hopefully Cannon turns into a stud himself. After all, the Sox took a chance on an Arizona State infielder in the second round back in 2004, a fella named Dustin Pedroia.
                                                    From Arizona to Boston

Boston's natural second round pick was the nephew of Carlos Beltran and the top student of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico, shortstop Matthew Lugo. The Sox are no stranger to the Beltran family as they drafted Carlos' cousin Raymond Fuentes in the first round back in 2009. He famously went to San Diego in the ill-fated trade for Adrian Gonzalez. Hopefully the Sox have better lucky with Lugo.
Sox get another crack at a Beltran

That's going to do it for this portion of the draft coverage. Rounds 3 through 10 are tomorrow. Hopefully Cannon and Lugo will be seen at Fenway somewhere down the line.
