Before the game, rookie Darwinzon Hernandez was brought up from Double A Portland to take the mound for tonight's game against the Texas Rangers. Darwinzon can touch 99 on the gun and can really bring it, he just doesn't know where its going most of the time. Ryan Brasier was placed on the Bereavement List to make room for Darwinzon to make the start.
OUT IN
As for the game, what a disaster this season is and its only June. The World Series champs are nothing but a bunch of mediocre bums this season. Stop me if you've heard this...Sox fall behind, they don't come back, the bullpen allows more runs. The same story almost every night was true tonight against the Texas Rangers. Darwinzon Hernandez (0-1, 5.06 ERA) made his first start and got hammered by the Rangers. Errors by Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts gave the Rangers the lead and they whacked Bobby Poyner around for 5 runs to put the game out of reach. Its only June but the Sox are already miles behind other teams with the AL East, falling back to .500 after their 9-5 loss to the Rangers at Fenway Park.
Ghoulish Tom Brady is sadHernandez got the ball in the top of the first and made a good first impression by striking out the side. Shin-Soo Choo, Danny Santana and Elvis Andrus all went down swinging to begin and end the inning. Andrew Benintendi flied out to center, JD Martinez struck out swinging and Rafael Devers popped up to short to end the inning.

Devers ties it upHernandez got knocked out in the fourth inning and it didn't help Devers booted a routine grounder by Guzman to start. Federowicz singled to center and that was it for Hernandez. Sox manager Alex Cora didn't want to push the rookie any further after 3 innings and 4 runs (3 earned) allowed. Colten Brewer came in and Choo walked to load the bases. Santana scored Guzman with a sac fly to give the Rangers the lead. Andrus and Mazara both whiffed to end the inning but Texas was ahead 4-3.

Rangers add to the leadThings got crazy in the bottom of the fifth as Mr. Mookie flied out to center to start. Benintendi thought he beat out a grounder to short but umpire Vic Carapazza called him out. Benintendi went berserk and started to tear off his clothes while screamining at the umpire. He was ejected and this prompted manager Alex Cora stormed out of the dugout with a sickle and started for Carapazza. Cora had to be restrained from attacking the umpire and he too was ejected. Martinez doubled to right and devers lined out to short to end the inning, what insanity.
Cora & Benintendi ejectedSam Travis came in for Benintendi for the top of the sixth and it was the Rangers turn to lose their manager. Santana grounded out to short but Andrus doubled to center. Mazara singled home Andrus but Mr. Mookie threw the ball into the Charles River for an error. Pence then jacked an inside the park home run past the sleeping Betts to wrap up Texas' scoring. Cabrera singled to left but was thrown out at second by Travis. Rangers manager Chris Woodward bolted out of the dugout with a gun and shot at the feet of umpire Angel Hernandez. Hernandez gave Woodward the heave-ho as he was escorted out of Fenway by armed security. Odor grounded out to short to end the inning with the Rangers ahead 9-3.

Martinez drives in a runMike Shawaryn came in for the top of the eighth and Andrus grounded out to short to start. Mazara and Pence both whiffed to end the inning. Fairbanks came in for the bottom of the eighth and Bogaerts walked to start. Holt whiffed but a wild pitch moved Xander to second before a Vazquez single to center put runners at the corners. Hernandez took strike three and Chavis whiffed to end the inning.
Shawaryn returned for the top of the ninth and Cabrera took strike three to start. Odor flied out to right and Guzman whiffed to end the inning. Delino DeShields Jr took over for Choo with Chris Martin now on the mound. Mr. Mookie greeted him with his 11th home run of the season to cut the lead. Travis whiffed, Martinez grounded out to second and Devers grounded out to first to end the game. The Rangers won it 9-5.

Final Thoughts:
So much for this year's Red Sox team. Once again the Sox fell behind, failed to come back then fell too far behind to come back. Its been happening all season and today was no different. Darwinzon Hernandez wasn't ready for prime time and the Rangers lit him up. Cora lifted him before it could get worse but then he was tossed and Poyner melted down to put the game out of reach. The offense put 5 runs on the board but when the other team is scoring 8-10 then it's not going to matter. There's still time for Sox GM Dave Dombrowski to make some moves before the trade deadline and the Sox can flip the switch for all we know. The Sox aren't hopelessly behind the New York Yankees but they can't afford to keep falling further and further behind. The loss dropped the Sox back to .500 at 34-34, 8 games behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East. The Sox look to break their 3 game losing streak when they play the Rangers tomorrow afternoon "Slick" Rick Porcello goes for the Sox against Lance Lynn of Texas. The game begins at 4:00 PM at Fenway Park.
