As for the game, Dave Dombrowski must be saying to himself "Oh (expletive)!". His big pitching acquisition Andrew Cashner (0-1) laid a complete egg in his Red Sox debut. The Toronto Blue Jays lit up Cashner for 6 runs in 5 innings including home runs from Teoscar Hernandez and Justin Smoak. The Sox bullpen got tagged for 4 runs to put the game out of reach. If this was the best Dombrowski could do, the Sox are in trouble as the Jays steamrolled the Sox 10-4 at Fenway Park.
The signs of doom began in the top of the first inning when Eric Sogard hit a rocket to center for a base hit to start. Vladimir Guerrero Jr banged into a double play but Lourdes Guriel Jr tripled into the right field corner. Randal Grichuk grounded out to short to end the inning. The Sox struck first against Jays starter Jacob Waguespack as Mr. Mookie Betts singled to center to start. Rafael Devers banged into a double play but Xander Bogaerts pounded his 21st home run of the season into the Monster Seats to give the Sox the lead. JD Martinez lined out to third to end the inning with the Sox up 1-0.
Right on cue the Jays attacked in the top of the second inning although Danny Jansen whiffed to begin. Justin Smoak walked and Freddy Galvis singled off the glove of Chavis. Teoscar Hernandez then blasted a home run to Neptune to put the Jays on top. Billy McKinney grounded out to first and Sogard grounded out to short to end the inning with the Jays ahead 3-1.
Andrew Benintendi walked to start the bottom of the second but Christian Vazquez banged into a double play. Jackie Bradley Jr struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Jays got another run in the top of the third as Guerrero Jr walked to start. Gurriel Jr singled to left but Grichuk banged into a double play. Jansen was plunked and Smoak singled home Guerrero to increase the lead. Galvis flied out to left to end the inning with the Jays up 4-1.
Michael Chavis whiffed to begin the bottom of the third but Brock "The Hitman" Holt walked. Mr. Mookie flied out to center and Devers flied out to left to end the inning.
Hernandez wisely swung and missed at strike three headed to the backstop and took first on the wild pitch to begin the top of the fourth. McKinney flied out to left. Sogard also flied out to left and Guerrero Jr flied out to center to end the inning. The Sox did nothing in the bottom of the fourth as Bogaerts grounded out to second to start. Martinez grounded out to short and Benintendi grounded out to second to end the inning.
Gurriel Jr grounded out to third to begin the top of the fifth and Grichuk flied out to right. Jansen lined out to first to end the inning. The Sox clawed back in the bottom of the fifth although Vazquez flied out to left to start. JBJ grounded out to second but Chavis singled to center. Holt doubled to left and Mr. Mookie singled home both runners. Devers walked and Bogaerts singled home Betts to tie the game. That was it for Waguespack as Justin Shafer came in to get Martinez to fly out to right to end the inning with the game tied 4-4.
All Cashner had to do was pitch a clean sixth but instead Smoak hit a home run all the way to Jupiter to give the Jays the lead back. Galvis singled and Sox manager Alex Cora had seen enough of Cashner. The big trade acquisition crapped himself as he was eventually charged with 6 runs in 5 plus innings. Josh Taylor came in and got Hernandez to ground into a force, but threw a pickoff ball away for an error. McKinney grounded out to first and another wild pitch scored Hernandez. Sogart whiffed to end the inning but the Jays led 6-4.
The Sox blew a rally in the bottom of the sixth as Benintendi doubled to left to start. Vazquez walked and JBJ beat out a double play ball to put runners at the corners. They were stranded as Chavis whiffed and Tim Mayza was brought in to pitch to Sam Travis, pinch hitting for Holt. Travis swung at strike three that bounced into the catcher's glove to end the inning.
Colten Brewer came in to pitch the top of the seventh and Guerrero Jr grounded out to third to start. Guriel Jr doubled to center but was doubled off second when Benintendi made a great diving catch and throw to end the inning. The Sox blew another rally in the bottom of the seventh as Mr. Mookie beat out a little roller to short to begin. Betts moved to second on the Devers grounder and David Phelps was brought in to pitch to Bogaerts. Xander walked but Martinez lined out to center, advancing Betts to third. Benintendi popped up to short to end the inning.
Darwinzon Hernandez, fresh off the IL, came in for the top of the eighth and blew away Jansen to start. Smoak walked and a passed ball moved him to second. Galvis lined out to right and Hernandez went down hacking to end the inning. Vazquez flied out to right to start the bottom of the eighth and JBJ took strike three. Chavis walked and Marco Hernandez pinch hit for Travis, flying out to center to end the inning.
The Jays iced it in the top of the ninth against Heath Hembree as McKinney tripled into the centerfield triangle to start. Sogard doubled him home and Guerrero Jr singled home Sogard to chase Hembree. Ryan Weber came in and got Gurriel Jr to force Guerrero at second. Gurriel swiped second and Grichuk doubled him home to increase the lead. Jansen singled home Grichuk to wrap up the scoring and Smoak flied out to left with Jansen getting thrown out at first to end the inning with the Jays up 10-4.
Daniel Hudson came in to close out the bottom of the ninth and Mr. Mookie took strike three to start. Devers flied out to center but Bogaerts doubled to left. Martinez walked but Benintendi grounded out to first to end the game. The Jays had won it 10-4.
Jackass of the Night is Andrew Cashner. He got lit up for 6 runs in 5 innings to take the loss.
The Good:
Mookie Betts was 3 for 5 with 2 rbis and a run scored.
Xander Bogaerts was 3 for 4 with a walk, home run and 2 total rbis.
Michael Chavis was 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.
Brock Holt was 1 for 1 with a walk and a run scored.
Colten Brewer pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Darwinzon Hernandez tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
The Bad:
Jackie Bradley Jr was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.
Sam Travis struck out as a pinch hitter.
Marco Hernandez was 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.
Josh Taylor allowed an inherited runner to score, threw a wild pitch and made an error in his inning of work.
Heath Hembree got pounded for 3 runs without making an out.
Ryan Weber allowed an inherited runner to score and one of his own in the ninth inning.
The Ugly:
Rafael Devers was 0 for 4 but walked.
JD Martinez was 0 for 4 but walked.
Andrew Benintendi was just 1 for 4 with a walk.
Christian Vazquez was 0 for 3 but walked.
Final Thoughts:
If that's a preview of Andrew Cashner in a Red Sox uniform, just cancel the season now. He looked lost out there and this was not the same guy who was headed to 15-16 wins with the Orioles. The Sox offense outside of Bogaerts didn't really do much either. The game was still winnable but as usual the worthless bullpen allowed 4 runs to put the game completely out of reach. Red Sox general manager Dave Dombrowski has 2 weeks to fix this. He can either blow it all up and try to prepare for 2020 or he can somehow work a trade for another pitcher. The Sox as they are currently presented clearly aren't good enough if they can't even beat the Toronto Blue Jays. The less said of this disaster, the better. The loss drops the Sox to 51-44, 10 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. Tomorrow night these two teams play game three of their series with Eduardo Rodriguez (10-4) on the mound against Aaron Sanchez of the Jays. The game begins at 7:10 PM at Fenway Park.
