Sox Pound Orioles (7/20/19)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox got some help when Nathan Eovaldi was activated off the Injured List. The Sox rotation is in shambles and Eovaldi returning healthy is a much needed shot in the arm for the team. Ryan Weber was sent down to Pawtucket to make room for Eovaldi.

As for the game, the bad news is "Slick" Rick Porcello (8-7, 5.61 ERA) got lit up for 6 runs in 5 innings of work. The good news is the Boston Red Sox scored a week's worth of runs against the terrible Baltimore Orioles. The Sox pounded out 17 hits and 17 runs including 5 home runs. Jackie Bradley Jr hit two 3 run home runs, Sandy Leon went yard, Mookie Betts went yard and the Sox turned a close game into a laughter. The Red Sox plastered the O's 17-6 at Camden Yards.

Porcello got the ball in the bottom of the first and Jonathan Villar took strike three to start. Trey Mancini struck out swinging but Chance Sisco singled to right. Renato Nunez grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Sox struck first in the top of the second as JD Martinez singled to center to start. Andrew Benintendi walked and Christian Vazquez singled home Martinez to give the Sox the lead. Michael Chavis grounded out to short, Brock "The Hitman" Holt took strike three and Mr. Mookie grounded out to third to end the inning with the Sox up 4-0.
                                                             JBJ goes yard

The O's did nothing in the bottom of the second as Dwight Smith Jr grounded out to third to start. Anthony Santander beat out an infield single to short but Chris Davis lined out to center. Rio Ruiz popped up to short to end the inning.

The Sox struck again in the top of the third as Devers mashed his 20th home run of the season to increase the lead. Bogaerts walked but Martinez took strike three. Benintendi and Vazquez both flied out to center to end the inning with the Sox ahead 5-0.

                                                     Nunez hits one out

The Sox exploded in the top of the fourth although JBJ lined out to center to start. Chavis hit a routine grounder to Martin but he booted it for an error. Holt flied out to center but Mr. Mookie clubbed his 15th home run of the season to give the Sox the lead back. Devers walked and Bogaerts singled him to third to chase Eshelman. Jimmy Yacabonis came in and Martinez doubled home both runners to ice the game. A wild pitch moved Martinez to third and Benintendi walked to put runners at the corners. Vazquez singled to left and JBJ smashed his second 3 run home run of the game to add the exclamation point. Chavis flied out to center to end the inning with the Sox ahead 13-5.
                                                           Betts adds to the lead

Porcello got Martin to pop up to first to begin the bottom of the fourth and Villar grounded out to first. Mancini doubled to left but Sisco struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox added to the misery in the top of the fifth as Holt doubled to center to start before moving to third on a wild pitch. Mr. Mookie singled to left to score Holt and Devers tripled home Betts. Santander trapped a line drive by Bogaerts for a single to score Devers. Martinez singled to left to chase Yacabonis. Tanner Scott came in and Benintendi took strike three before Vazquez beat out a double play ball. JBJ grounded out to short to end the inning with the Sox up 16-5.

Davis and Ruiz stroked back to back singles but Martin grounded out to second to end the inning with the O's down 16-6. That was it for Porcello who struggled like hell to go 5 innings and he still allowed 6 runs.
                                                    Not Porcello's best stuff

                                                        Sox win

Hero of the Night is Jackie Bradley Jr. He hit not one but two 3 run home runs to match Baltimore's entire output by himself.
                                                            Jackie Bradley Hero

Final Thoughts:

That was a good win but once again, look who it was against. Still, after getting their brains beat in yesterday by the Orioles, it was nice to do the beating for once. The bad news was Porcello got tagged for 6 runs and the Sox needed an offensive explosion to win the game. The Sox can't keep giving up a lot of runs every game, especially if its David Price and Porcello struggling. The Sox can beat down the Orioles but where was this against the Los Angeles Dodgers? Hope they can keep this momentum going with a possible season saving week against the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees coming up. The bright side was the bullpen pitched a shutout and getting the bats going was badly needed. The Sox still need a pitcher and they have 11 days to get one. Some angry fans want the Sox to sell the stars and blow it up, good grief. Still, a win is a win even if its against the Orioles. The win improved the Sox to 54-45, 11 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. Tomorrow the Sox look to take the series against the O's when they send Andrew Cashner (0-1) out against Andrew Wojciechowski of Baltimore. The game begins at 1:05 PM at Camden Yards.
