In other news, Sox ace Chris Sale began his rehab with the Portland Sea Dogs tonight in Portland. Sale tossed 3 2/3 hitless innings, walked 1 and struck out 6 Harrisburg Senators in his first real game action since August of 2019. Sale will make another rehab outing with the Sea Dogs to get his wind back before he makes a start or two in Worcester barring any setbacks. The Sox may not need another starting pitcher at the trade deadline if Sale can come back in early August throwing bullets like the Sale of old. Hopefully this could be the start of Sale's big comeback.
Sale dominates in Double AIn minor news, the Sox formally signed third round pick Tyler McDonough to a contract. Since he played in college and is already 22 years old, he may bypass the rookie league and go straight to Low A Salem. The Sox may be shipping some minor league bodies out at the trade deadline for some major league talent so they may wait to see who's left and what positions need to be filled before making a final decision on where to put McDonough. He's a switch hitting second basemen/utility which means best case scenario, a future Brock "The Hitman" Holt. Time will tell on that one.
McDonough could be Salem boundOn This Day in Basebawful History:
2017 - Smoak, Jays drop Sox
2018 - Price, Sox shut out Tigers
Tomorrow night the Sox are back in action against the Toronto Blue Jays if the weather permits it. Garrett Richards (5-5) goes for the Sox against Robbie Ray. Thomas Hatch will have to wait to get a crack at the Red Sox. The game begins at 7:05 PM at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York.
