Sox Rally Past Indians (5/25/13)

It was a good day for Boston sports. The Boston Bruins knocked out the New York Rangers in Game 5 of their second round NHL playoff series and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians. For 7 innings the Sox and Indians played a game of "anything you can do, I can do better" as they waged a war. In the end it was the Red Sox that pulled it out with some late inning heroics. Sox starter Jon Lester didn't have his best stuff but some timely hitting picked him up big time in the game. The Sox rallied from a 4-3 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the game 7-4 at Fenway Park.
Zdeno Chara (and friends) approves of the win

The Indians struck first in the top of the first. Drew Stubbs whiffed before Mike Avilies grounded out to second. Asdrubal Cabrera singled and stole second before scoring on a Nick Swisher double. Mark Reynolds flied out to left to end the inning with the Indians up 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Sox exhibited the second and third problems they've been having, inability to hit in the clutch and inability to hit left handed pitching. Jacoby Ellsbury drew a leadoff walk against Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir but Jonny Gomes popped up to second. Dustin Pedroia whiffed but David Ortiz drew another walk. Mike Napoli flied out to center to end the threat.
Lord Vader finds the Red Sox lack of clutch hitting disturbing

Lester settled down in the top of the second inning as Carlos Santana whiffed to start. Yan Gomes grounded out to third but Michael Brantley singled. Ryan Raburn hit one up the elevator shaft to end the inning. The Sox struck back in the bottom of the second. Daniel Nava whiffed and David Ross struck out for the second out, but Jose Iglesias beat out a ground ball and advanced to second on a balk. Iglesias was singled home by the much maligned Pedro Ciriaco to tie the game. Ellsbury flied out to center to end the inning but it was now 1-1.
Sox got a clutch hit from the unlikeliest of hitters

Just as soon as the Sox tied the game, Lester gave the lead right back i n the top of the 3rd. Stubbs drew a walk and advanced to second on an Avilies ground out. Cabrera doubled in Stubbs and ran toward home on a single by Swisher but Gomes threw him out. Reynolds was hit by a pitch and the Indians got yet another two out rbi when Ciriaco kicked a ball hit by Santana, allowing Swisher to score. Gomes struck out but it was now 3-1 Cleveland.
                                                    "THIS SUCKS!!!" - Lester

The Sox failed to score in the bottom of the third as Gomes grounded out to third to start. Pedroia doubled but Ortiz whiffed. Napoli flied out to center to end the inning.

Lester came back in the top of the fourth and gave up a leadoff double to Brantley. Raburn grounded out to third, Stubbs popped up to second and Avilies grounded out to second to start. The Sox got a run back in the bottom of the 4th when Nava worked a leadoff walk, Ross struck out for the second time but Iglesias doubled, Nava scoring on the error by Raburn. Ciriaco moved Iglesias to third but Ellsbury grounded out to end the inning with the Sox down 3-2.

Lester cruised in the top of the fifth inning as Cabrera and Swisher both flied out to right to start. Reynolds singled but Santana whiffed to end the inning. The Sox failed to score in the bottom of the fifth as Gomes whiffed to start. Pedroia walked but was forced out when Cabrera let a pop up hit by Ortiz drop. Napoli singled but Nava grounded back to the mound to end the inning.
"You gotta be kiddin" - Pedroia

Lester turned up the heat in the top of the sixth inning. Gomes and Brantley both looked at strike three before Raburn whiffed to end the inning. Bryan Shaw came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth and the Sox struck again. Ross whiffed for the hat trick but Iglesias singled. Ciriaco caught Cabrera asleep with a bunt and he threw the ball away, putting runners at the corners. Ellsbury was intentionally walked to load the bases and Gomes scored Iglesias with a sac fly to tie the game. Pedroia flied out to right to end the inning but it was now 3-3.

As soon as the Sox tied the game, Lester coughed up the lead in the top of the 7th. Stubbs grounded out to short but Aviles and Cabrera hit back to back one out singles, Avilies advancing to third. Pedroia snatched a Swisher line drive for the second out. All Lester needed was one more out but he couldn't get it. Cabrera swiped second and Lester uncorked a wild pitch that scored Aviles and moved up Cabrera. Reynolds struck out to end the inning but the damage was done, 4-3 Indians.
"Gadzooks Ross, can't you catch a ball 7 feet in the dirt??" - JL

The Sox mustered nothing in the bottom of the seventh inning with Joe Smith on the mound. Ortiz whiffed and Napoli flied out to right, but Nava walked. Ross earned the golden sombrero with his fourth strikeout of the day.

That was it for Jon Lester as Junichi Tazawa (4-2, 2.53 ERA) replaced him for the top of the 8th. Taz struck out Santana and Gomes before Brantley grounded out to first to end the inning.
"Nobody can hit me!" - Taz

The Sox exploded in the bottom of the eighth with Michael Bourn in for Raburn and Vinnie Pestano on the mound. Iglesias grounded out to second but Ciriaco then doubled. Ellsbury struck out and with the Sox one out away from going into the 9th down a run, Mike Carp pinch hit for Gomes and doubled in Pedro to tie the game. Pedroia then doubled in Carp to give the Sox their first lead of the game 5-4. Indians manager Terry Francona had managed David Ortiz for 9 years and he was well aware of Ortiz late inning heroics, Tito took no chances and had Big Papi walked. Napoli took a conventional walk to load the bases. The Sox then got another clutch hit when Nava knocked in Pedroia and Ortiz with a single for some insurance. Ross then capped off his crappy afternoon by striking out for the FIFTH time today. If 4 strikeouts is a golden sombrero, 5 must be a platinum donut. Still, the Sox had gone into the inning down 4-3 and ended up on top 7-4.
Not the best day for Ross that's for sure.

With the Sox now leading, Andrew Bailey came on to close out the game but not without some nail biting. Bourn singled to right to lead off but pinch hitter Jason Kipnis (for Stubbs) struck out. Bailey got Aviles to pop up as Bourn sashayed to second base.  Cabrera flied out to end the game as the Red Sox had won it 7-4.

Hero of the Night is Dustin Pedroia. His rbi double in the eighth gave the Sox the lead for good
                                                    Pedroia the Hero

The Good:

Mike Carp doubled in the tying run and scored the go ahead run.

Daniel Nava was 1 for 3 with 2 walks, 2 rbi's and a run scored.

Jose Iglesias was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

Pedro Ciriaco was 3 for 4 with an rbi and a run scored.

Junichi Tazawa got the win with a scoreless eighth inning.

Andrew Bailey earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bad:

David Ross earned the rare platinum donut by going 0 for 5 with 5 strikeouts.

The Ugly:

Jacoby Ellsbury was 0 for 3 but walked twice.

Jonny Gomes was 0 for 3 but drove in a run.

David Ortiz was 0 for 3 but walked twice and scored a run.

Mike Napoli was just 1 for 4 but walked.

Jon Lester gave up 4 runs off TEN hits in 7 innings of work.

Final Thoughts:

This was a good, gutsy come from behind win that showcased what Iglesias can do when given the chance. He's not going to hit 40 homers and he may not hit .240 but at least he's going to give you prime defensive efforts when he's out there. It was nice to see Lester grit his teeth and take his lumps to go 7 and save the rest of the bullpen (save Tazawa and Bailey) for tomorrow with Felix Doubront slated to pitch the finale. Its promising to see the bullpen not give up more runs when behind, allowing the offense at least a chance to tie or go ahead. It was nice to see the role players such as Carp and Ciriaco step up, guess all Pedro needed was the promotion of Iglesias to light a fire under his ass. The Sox will have some problems of who stays and who goes when Victorino, Middlebrooks and Franklin Morales are ready to come off the DL, but they'll cross that path when they come to it. The win puts the Sox at 30-20, 1 game behind the victorious Yankees for 1st place in the AL East. Tomorrow is the finale of the four game set with the Indians with Doubront on the mound against Corey Kluber at 1:30 PM at Fenway Park.

Lackey Returns, Sox Sweep Astros (4/28/13)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox sent Daniel Bard back to Pawtucket in favor of the returning John Lackey. Bard couldn't find the plate last night so he was the odd man out. Better luck next time...if there is a next time.
                                                                       Out
                                                                     In

It was a good day for Boston sports. The Boston Celtics staved off elimination with their Game 4 first round victory over the New York Knicks and the Boston Red Sox swept the Houston Astros. John returned and pitched like the Lackey of old, and by old I mean 2009. He looks in shape for the first time in years and apart from a lousy first inning, he held the Houston Astros to just 1 run. The Red Sox offense scratched out 6 runs and they completed the four game sweep with a 6-1 victory at Fenway Park.
Jason Terry approves of the win

Lackey pitched like crap in the top of the first inning. Robbie Grossman struck out and Jose Altuve grounded out, but Jason Castro walked. Carlos Pena walked and Ronny Cedeno singled home Castro. Fernando "Cinco-cinco-cinco nuevedos-nuevedos" Martinez flied out to right to end the inning with the Astros up 1-0. The Sox didn't waste anytime coming back in the bottom of the first inning against Astros starter Bud Norris. Jacoby Ellsbury grounded out but Daniel Nava doubled. Dustin Pedroia walked and David Ortiz singled home Nava to tie the game. Mike Napoli struck out but Mike Carp walked to load the bases. Jarrod Saltalamacchia grounded out to kill the rally but the game was tied.
                                                             Ortiz ties it up

Lackey almost cruised in the top of the second inning. Matt Dominguez singled but Rick Ankiel flied out to right. Marwin Gonzalez grounded out to third and Grossman flied out to right to end the inning. Norris settled down in the bottom of the second inning. Will Middlebrooks singled but Stephen Drew struck out. Ellsbury beat out a double-play ball but was thrown out trying to steal to end the inning.

Lackey found his groove in the top of the third inning. Altuve and Castro grounded out before Pena struck out to end the inning. Norris matched Lackey in the bottom of the third inning. Nava struck out and Pedroia flied out. Ortiz flied out to end the inning.

Lackey cruised in the top of the fourth inning. Cedeno flied out to right, Martinez struck out and Dominguez flied out to end the inning. The Sox struck back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Napoli singled but was foolishly thrown out trying to stretch into a double. Carp and Saltalamacchia stroked back to back singles but Middlebrooks struck out. Drew then tripled home the two runners to give the Sox a 3-1 lead. Ellsbury grounded out to end the inning.
Drew triples to make it 3-1.

Lackey continued to dominate in the top of the fifth inning. Ankiel, Gonzalez and Grossman all grounded out to end the inning in short order. The Sox rallied again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gonzalez not only booted a ground ball, he thew wide to first allowing Nava to reach second base. Pedroia doubled home Nava but Ortiz flied out to right. Napoli struck out but Carp doubled home Pedroia. Saltalamacchia flied out to end the inning with the Sox up 5-1.
                                                  Carp makes it 5-1

Lackey returned for one last inning in the top of the sixth inning. Altuve grounded out but Castro singled. Pena and Cedeno singled to load the bases but Lackey got a huge strikeout by getting Martinez swinging. Dominguez grounded out to end the inning. After a rough first inning, Lackey hung tough to toss 6 solid inning.
                                            "Congrats you sonovagun" - Saltalamacchia

Norris returned for the bottom of the sixth and cruised. Middlebrooks lined out, Drew popped up and Ellsbury whiffed to end the inning.

Clayton "Vigo" Mortensen came on to pitch the top of the seventh inning. Ankiel popped up but Mortensen booted a ground ball and did a cannonball on home plate rather than try to field it, allowing Gonzalez to reach first. Marwin was erased on the force by Grossman. Altuve grounded out to end the inning. The Sox rallied again in the bottom of the seventh inning off of Jose Cisnero. Nava singled and took second on a balk. Pedroia lined out but Ortiz doubled home Nava. Napoli and Carp both struck out to end the inning but it was now 6-1.

Jonny Gomes took over in left as Koji Uehara came on to pitch the top of the eighth inning. Castro flied out but Pena singled. Cedeno flied out but Uehara uncorked a wild pitch to advance Pena to second. Martinez grounded out to second base to end the inning. Cisnero returned for the bottom of the eighth but the bats were done for the night. Saltalamacchia whiffed, Middlebrooks flied out and Drew popped up to end the inning.

Sox closer Andrew Bailey took over for the top of the ninth to get some work in since he hadnt been needed for four days now. Dominguez flied out but Ankiel hit a ground rule double. Gonzalez flied out and Grossman flied out to end the game. The Sox had won 5 in a row and swept the Astros with a 6-1 victory.
"We did it! We swept those stupid bastards, we did it!!"

Hero of the Night is John Lackey. He came off the disabled list to toss 6 innings of 1 run ball, surviving a tough first inning to scatter 5 hits and 2 walks.
Hero of the Night: John Lackey

The Good:

Daniel Nava was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored.

Dustin Pedroia was 1 for 3 with a walk, rbi and a run scored.

David Ortiz was 2 for 4 with 2 rbi's.

Mike Carp was 2 for 3 with a walk, run scored and rbi before being lifted for Gomes.

Clayton Mortensen pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

Andrew Bailey pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bad:

Jacoby Ellsbury was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

The Ugly:

Mike Napoli was just 1 for 4 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was just 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Will Middlebrooks was just 1 for 4

Stephen Drew was just 1 for 4 but made the hit count as 2 run triple put the Sox ahead for good.

Honorable Mention:

Jonny Gomes played left field in the later innings

Final Thoughts:

Maybe its too early to start believing, but this Red Sox team seems to be gelling faster than anyone expected. Getting John Lackey back in shape with Lester and Buchholz plus a shutdown bullpen may just be enough to overcome the offensive woes to be a contender this year. The Sox offense is producing now but who knows how things will play out. The platoon of Nava and Gomes has paid off, Napoli has been an rbi machine and Shane Victorino finds ways to get on base. Pedroia and Ortiz have been themselves and Ellsbury is having a great start. Today's game was a microcosm of the month and maybe it won't last, but it sure is fun to watch. Tomorrow is an off-day so the Sox will be back Tuesday night in Toronto to face the Blue Jays. Jon Lester goes up against Brandon Morrow at 7 PM.

Sox Win Home Opener, Outduel Orioles (4/8/13)

After playing their first bunch of games on the road, the Boston Red Sox made their home debut at Fenway Park by edging the Baltimore Orioles. Clay Buchholz was outstanding, tossing 7 shut-out innings and used some timely offense to squeak by 3-1.
Wilt, Arnold and Andre approve of the win

Buchholz got the ball in the top of the first and was greeted by a Nate McLouth single. Manny Machado popped up, Nick Markakis flied out and Adam Jones flied out to end the inning. Wei-Yin Chen was equally tough in the bottom of the first. Jacoby Ellsbury popped up, Shane Victorino lined out and Dustin Pedroia grounded out to end the inning.

Buchholz walked Chris Davis to begin the bottom of the second. Matt Wieters flied out, JJ Hardy looked at strike three and Ryan Flaherty whiffed to end the inning. Chen matched Clay in the bottom of the second. Mike Napoli flied out to center and Will Middlebrooks flied out to right, but Daniel Nava walked. Jonny Gomes popped up to end the inning.

Clay ran into some trouble in the top of the third. Steven Pearce grounded out and McLouth watched strike three go by, but Machado and Markakis both singled. Jones whiffed to end the inning. Chen continued to dominate in the bottom of the third. David Ross, Jose Iglesias and Ellsbury all flied out to left to end the inning.

Davis walked again in the top of the fourth but was erased on the Wieters force. Hardy then bounced into a double play to end the inning. The Sox threatened in the bottom of the fourth. Victorino singled but was thrown out trying to steal. Pedroia walked but Napoli banged into a double play to end the inning.

Clay got bit by another walk in the top of the fifth. Flaherty grounded out and Pearce whiffed, but McLouth walked. Machado flied out to end the inning. The Sox threatened again in the bottom of the fifth. Middlebrooks struck out but Nava singled. Gomes struck out and Ross grounded out to end the inning.

Buchholz finally cruised in the top of the sixth. Markakis grounded out, Jones lined out and Davis struck out to end the inning. Chen matched him in the bottom of the sixth. Iglesias grounded out, Ellsbury lined out and Victorino flied out to end the inning.

Buchholz had one last inning left in him and it was the top of the seventh. Wieters walked but Hardy struck out. Wieters moved to second on the Flaherty ground out and Pearce struck out to end the inning.
"I got this bitch" - CB

The Sox finally struck first in the bottom of the seventh. Pedroia singled and Napoli doubled, but Middlebrooks whiffed. Nava then swatted a 3 run bomb into the Monster seats to make it 3-0. How's that for a clutch hit?
"We got this one fellas!" -DN

That was it for Chen who pitched great until the end. Tommy Hunter got the call out of the bullpen and Sox manager John Farrell countered by pinch hitting Gomes with Mike Carp. Carp grounded out and Ross struck out to end the inning.

Andrew Bailey got the call in the top of the eighth and turned up the heat. McLouth and Machado both struck out and Markakis flied out to end the inning.
                                           Welcome back healthy Bailey

Hunter returned for the bottom of the eighth and got both Iglesias and Ellsbury to ground out. Victorino flied out to end the inning.

Sox closer Joel Hanrahan took the mound o close out the game in the top of the ninth. Unfortunately Adam Jones greeted him with a blast to left to cut the lead 3-1. Davis grounded out and Wieters struck out but Hardy doubled. Representing the tying run, Flaherty popped up to end the game. The Sox held on to win 3-1.
                                            Hanrahan says "GAME OVER!"

Hero of the night is Daniel Nava. His 3 run home run was the difference in the game and made a winner out of Buchholz.
Daniel Nava is Hero for a day

The Good:

Dustin Pedroia was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. Mike Napoli was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Clay Buchholz was outstanding, earning his second win by tossing 7 innings of shut out ball, allowing 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 8. Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect eighth inning.

The Bad:

Jacoby Ellsbury was 0 for 4. Will Middlebrooks was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. Jonny Gomes was 0 for 2. Mike Carp pinch hit for Gomes and grounded out. David Ross was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Jose Iglesias was 0 for 3.

The Ugly:

Shane Victorino was just 1 for 4.  Joel Hanrahan gave up the home run to Jones but earned his 3rd save of the year.

Final Thoughts:

Well that was a fun game. A pitcher's duel decided by one decisive blow by Nava and some superb pitching by Buchholz and Bailey. Without the strain of closing and with a healthy body, maybe Bailey will be devastating this year. Hanrahan giving up solo shots with a 3 run lead is annoying but its not the end of the world. Winning close games is something the Sox didn't do last year so hopefully this year is different. Tomorrow Ryan Dempster takes the mound opposite Jake Arrieta in Game 2 of this series.

O's Drop Unclutch Sox (8/14/12)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made a roster move. It was discovered that Kelly Shoppach was the one who blew the whistle on how horrible Sox manager Bobby Valentine is to the media so Sox GM Ben Cherrington shipped him to the New York Mets for a player to be named. It would have been a lot easier for Cherrington just to fire Valentine but oh well, bye bye Kelly. In his place the Sox finally activated closer Andrew Bailey off the Disabled List. Its too little, too late with the Sox hopelessly out of the AL East race but at least he can show something for next year.
                                                                      OUT
                                                                 IN

As for the game, with tensions buzzing over another media blowup, the Boston Red Sox found a new way to lose tonight against the Baltimore Orioles. The Sox as a team pounded out 11 hits....but only scraped out one run. A lot of guys got hits but none of them when it mattered. Josh Beckett (5-10, 5.19 ERA) continued his career nosedive by getting knocked out in the sixth inning after allowing 6 runs. Andrew Bailey made his too little, too late Red Sox debut by striking out the only man he faced, but by that point the O's already had a commanding lead. Reports of the Red Sox players hating Bobby Valentine are coming out and it shows as the Sox dropped another game 7-1 to the O's at Camden Yards.

Wei-Yin Chen got the ball for Baltimore in the top of the first and Jacoby Ellsbury slapped a leadoff single in the hole at short to start. Pedro Ciriaco dropped down the perfect bunt and almost beat it out. Dustin Pedroia lined one off the glove of Chen but Manny Machado gunned him down at first. Adrian Gonzalez struck out swinging to end the inning. Beckett got the ball in the bottom of the first and Nick Markakis grounded out to second to start. JJ Hardy popped up to short and Nate McLouth struck out swinging to end the inning.

Cody Ross grounded out to second to start the top of the second inning but Ryan Lavarnway singled to right. Carl Crawford beat out a fielder's choice and Mike Aviles struck out swinging to end the inning. Adam Jones popped up on the infield but Avilies sprinted past Beckett to make the catch. Matt Wieters walked and Chris Davis singled to right, but Mark Reynolds hit one up the elevator shaft. Manny Machado popped up to third in foul territory to end the inning.

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the third as Machado made a good play to rob Danny Valencia of a hit to start. Ellsbury grounded out to first but Ciriaco doubled down the left field line. Pedroia walked but Gonzalez flied out to left to end the inning. The O's struck first in the bottom of the third as Omar Quintanilla clobbered a home run all the way to the Red Sea to start. Markakis grounded out to short, Hardy popped up to first and McLouth popped up to first to end the inning with the O's up 1-0.
                                                            Home run Quintanilla

The Sox fought back in the top of the fourth when Ross hit a ground rule double to the left field stands to start. Ross moved to third on a grounder to first by Lavarnway and scored on the Crawford base hit to center. Avilies struck out swinging and Valencia flied out to center to end the inning with the game tied 1-1.
                                                    Crawford ties it up

Beckett cruised in the bottom of the fourth as Jones struck out swinging to start. Wieters lined out to center and Davis flied out to left to end the inning.

Ellsbury grounded out to second to start the top of the fifth and Ciriaco grounded out to short. Pedroia tripled into the right field corner but Gonzalez grounded out to second to end the inning. The O's retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Reynolds hit a home run to Jupiter to start. Machado popped up to short, Quintanilla lined out to left and Markakis flied out to center to end the inning with the O's up 2-1.
                                                          Reynolds hits a home run

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the sixth and Ross singled to left to start. Lavarnway lined out to left but Crawford singled to right. Aviles struck out swinging and Valencia flied out to center to end the inning. The O's finally knocked out Beckett in the bottom of the sixth as Hardy got a base hit to left to start. McLouth popped up to third but Jones walked. A wild pitch moved both runners over and Jones hit a Baltimore chopper over all 3 defenders to score Hardy with another run. Davis lined a base hit to center to score Jones and chase Beckett. Josh would be charged with 6 runs before the inning was over. Mark Melancon came in to pitch and naturally he served up a 3 run homer to Reynolds all the way to Jacksonville, Florida to ice the game. Machado grounded out to short and Quintanailla struck out swinging to end the inning but the game was all but finished 7-1.
                                                Reynolds ices the game

Ellsbury dropped a base hit to right to start the top of the seventh and chase Chen. Darren O'Day came in and Ciriaco struck out swinging. Pedroia doubled to right and Gonzalez walked to load the bases, but Ross struck out swinging. Lavarnway took strike three to end the inning, what a waste. Melancon got Markakis to grounded out to second to start the bottom of the seventh and Hardy struck out swinging. McLouth grounded out to first to end the inning.

Old friend JC Romero came in to pitch the top of the eighth and Crawford flied out to center to start. Aviles also flied out to center but Valencia singled to left. Ellsbury grounded out to first to end the inning. Scott Posednik came in to play center for the bottom of the eighth and Jones struck out swinging to start. Wieters grounded back to the mound and that was it for Melancon. Andrew Bailey made his Red Sox debut by walking Chris Davis but striking out Reynolds swinging to end the inning.
Better late than never for Bailey

Matt Lindstrom came in to close out the top of the ninth and Ciriaco lined out to left to start. Pedroia flied out to right and Gonzalez grounded out to short to end the game. The O's had won it 7-1.
                                                                       O's win

Jackass of the Night is Josh Beckett. He got hammered for 6 runs in 5 1/3 innings to put the Sox in a hole too deep to climb out of.
                                              2006 Jackass Beckett returns

The Good:

Jacoby Ellsbury was 2 for 5.

Dustin Pedroia was 2 for 4 with a walk.

Cody Ross was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Carl Crawford was 2 for 4 with an rbi.

Andrew Bailey struck out the only man he faced.

The Bad:

Mike Aviles was 0 for 4 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts.

The Ugly:

Pedro Ciriaco was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Adrian Gonzalez was 0 for 4 with a strikeout but walked.

Ryan Lavarnway was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Danny Valencia was just 1 for 4.

Mark Melancon allowed the 3 run homer to Reynolds in 2 1/3 innings.

Honorable Mention:

Scott Posednik played centerfield in the bottom of the eighth.

Final Thoughts:

Not only is the season going down the drain, but if that wasn't bad enough,......this happened. Yessire bob, the players themselves have revolted against Valentine. Its been a long time coming to after the lackadaisical play as of late. Tensions have been bad virtually all season with incidents popping up here and there but now that its in full print in the media for the whole world to see, there's no denying it now. Its been a bad year anyway with long term injuries to David Ortiz, Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury, Will Middlebrooks and John Lackey missing the season with Tommy John surgery, but anyone that's left clearly has no love for Valentine. Its almost guaranteed Valentine won't be back next season to manage this team and hopefully the next guy in can get the most out of Gonzalez, Crawford, Pedroia, etc thast Bobby couldn't. A picture surfaced of Bobby Valentine sleeping in his office with Pedroia sarcastically saying "Here's our manager making the starting lineups" Its gotten pretty ugly around here. As for this game, how the heck do you crank out 11 hits but only 1 run? The O's only had 7 as a team but still plated 7 runs. Chen is a good pitcher but it wasn't like he was working on a 3 hit shutout. Once again the Sox are finding new ways to lose and the season can't end fast enough. The loss dropped the Sox to 57-60, 12.5 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. Tomorrow night Aaron Cook (3-5) looks to stop the bleeding against Miguel Gonzalez of the Orioles. The game begins at 7:05 PM at Camden Yards.
