Clemens, Sox Blank Indians (9/10/88)

Don't look now but the Boston Red Sox are closing in on the AL East Division title. Roger Clemens (16-10, 2.86 ERA) pitched arguably his best game of the season against the Cleveland Indians. He threw a complete game, 1 hit shutout to keep some distance between the Sox and the Detroit Tigers. The Sox chipped away at Indians starter Bud Black with rbi's from Jody Reed and Larry Parrish before Dwight Evans iced the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two run single. Evans and Ellis Burks got to the bullpen for another two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Clemens had a no-hitter into the eighth inning but Dave Clark broke it up. Still, Clemens dominated and the Sox cruised in this one 6-0 at Fenway Park.

Final Thoughts:

Clemens has a bad habit of losing no-hitters in the eighth inning. Everyone remembers Oddibe McDowell in Texas two years ago and now its Dave Clark. Still, Clemens is something else and one of the main reasons the Sox are this close to October for the second time in three seasons. The offense did its job today with Evans being the main producer with help from Barrett with a few good bunts. Rick Cerone is dealing with torn knee cartilage so keep an eye on him moving forward. All in all it was a good win and it gives the Sox some breathing room after 141 games so far. The win improved the Sox to 79-62, 3.5 games in front of the Tigers for first place in the AL East with 21 games remaining. The Sox look to gain even more ground tomorrow against the Indians when Wes Gardner gets the start up against Tom Candiotti of Oakland. The game begins at 1:05 PM at Fenway Park.
