Sox Select Gomez & Schwaab in Rule 5 Draft (12/13/18)

Today was MLB's Rule 5 draft and the Boston Red Sox didn't select anyone in the major league portion but they did take two guys in the minor league portion. One of them was 25 year old right handed pitcher Anyelo Gomez out of the New York Yankees system. Gomez was one of the top system pitchers in 2017 but pitched in just 7 games this year for Scranton. If he can come back from injury, this could be a good pickup for the Sox.

The other guy they chose from the New York Yankees system was 25 year old right handed pitcher Andrew Schwaab. He was 2-3 with a 4.42 ERA for Double A Trenton this year and Sox brass figures they can fix him when he comes to Portland next year. At worst, he's just another guy but at best, they just stole a potential major league talent from the Yankees.

Its highly unlikely either one of these guys turn into stars. Mostly this was Dave Dombrowski sticking it to the Yankees by taking two of their prospects. The way the Sox are built, they won't even need them this coming season as they hope to defend their crown.
