Sox Pull Away Late, Down A's (4/2/98)

So far so good for the new look 1998 Boston Red Sox. Pedro Martinez was impressive in his debut last night and today the offense responded by getting to the Oakland A's bullpen. Sox starter Tim Wakefield and Oakland starter Kenny Rogers fought to a 3-3 stalemate with both out of the game by the end of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Mo Vaughn put the Sox ahead with an rbi single and Jim Leyritz added an rbi hit of his own to put the Sox on top. The Sox bullpen responded with 3 scoreless innings including Tom Gordon slamming the door in the bottom of the ninth. The Sox beat the A's 6-3 in Oakland Coliseum.

Rogers got the ball in the top of the first inning and Nomar Garciaparra grounded out to short to start. John Valentin grounded out to short but Mo Vaughn walked. Jim Leyritz grounded out to second to end the inning. Wakefield got the ball in the bottom of the first and Rickey Henderson popped up to short to start. Jason McDonald singled to center and Ben Grieve popped up to short. McDonald stole second but Matt Stairs struck out swinging to end the inning.

Rookie Jason Varitek made his season debut in the top of the second with a pop up to first in foul territory. Damon Buford made his Sox debut with a fly out to right but Troy O'Leary drew a walk. Darren Lewis grounded out to first to end the inning. The A's struck first in the bottom of the second as Jason Giambi singled in the hole at second to short. Mike Blowers was hit with a pitch and Giambi took third on the Scott Spiezio fly ball to right. AJ Hinch scored Giambi with a sac fly to give the A's the lead then Rafael Bournigal flied out to left to end the inning with the A's up 1-0.

Donnie Sadler lined out to first to start the top of the third and Garciaparra lined out to right. Valentin also lined out to right to end the inning. Henderson popped up to left to start the bottom of the third before McDonald grounded out to first. Grieve lined out to third to end the inning.

The Sox struck back in the top of the fourth although Vaughn grounded out to first to start. Leyritz walked, Varitek singled to center and Buford walked to load the bases. O'Leary singled to center to score Leyritz to tie the game and Lewis was hit with a pitch to score Varitek. Sadler hit a sac fly to center to score Buford and increase the lead. Garciaparra lined out to left to end the inning with the Sox ahead 3-1.

The A's answered in the bottom of the fourth as Stairs singled to right and Giambi doubled him home to cut the lead. Blowers grounded out to third, Spiezio popped up to left and Hinch struck out swinging to end the inning with the A's down 3-2.

Valentin grounded out to short to start the top of the fifth and Vaughn struck out swinging. Leyritz flied out to right to end the inning. Bournigal grounded out to short to begin the bottom of the fifth before Henderson also grounded out to short. McDonald took strike three to end the inning.

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the sixth as Varitek grounded out to third to start. Buford doubled to left, O'Leary walked and Lewis singled to right to load the bases. Billy Taylor came in to pitch and Sox manager Jimy Williams countered by sending Reggie Jefferson in to pinch hit for Sadler. Giambi made a diving catch on a pop up but Buford tried to come home. Giambi fired home and Buford was out by a mile to end the inning, what a waste.

Mike Benjamin came in to play second in the bottom of the sixth and Grieve walked to start. Stairs singled to left but was forced at second by Giambi. Blowers singled to left to score Grieve and tie the game, but Spiezio moved Giambi to third with a fly ball to center. That was it for Wakefield as John Wasdin made his season debut by plunking Hinch to load the bases. Bournigal lined out to left to end the inning with the game tied 3-3.

The Sox went up for good in the top of the seventh as Nomar singled in the hole at short to start before moving to third on the single in the hole at second by Valentin. Lefty Buddy Groom came in to pitch to Vaughn and Mo singled home Garciaparra with a base hit to left. Leyritz singled to center to score Valentin but Varitek flied out to center. Buford took strike three and O'Leary lined out to center to end the inning with the Sox ahead 5-3.

Henderson flied out to left to start the bottom of the seventh but McDonald singled to center. McDonald stole second but Grieve watched strike three go by. Steve Avery was brought in to pitch but old buddy Kevin Mitchell came in to pinch hit for Stairs. Mitchell popped up to first in foul territory to end the inning.

The Sox wrapped up the scoring in the top of the eighth as Lewis grounded out to short to start. Aaron Small came in to pitch and Benjamin doubled to left. Benjamin took third on a wild pitch and Garciaparra scored him with a base hit to left. Nomar was thrown out trying to steal and Valentin flied out to right to end the inning with the Sox ahead 6-3.

Jim Corsi came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Giambi walked to start. Blowers struck out swinging but Nomar booted a grounder by Spiezio to put runners at the corners. Dave Magadan pinch hit for Hinch and banged into a double play to end the inning.

Izzy Molina took over behind the plate with former Milwaukee Brewers closer Mike Fetters now on the mound for the top of the ninth. Vaughn struck out swinging but Leyritz singled to left. Midre Cummings made his Red Sox debut by pinch running for Leyritz but Varitek struck out swinging. Cummings stole second but Buford struck out swinging to end the inning.

Tom Gordon came in to close out the bottom of the ninth with old pal Shane Mack pinch hitting for Bournigal to start. Mack lined out to right, Henderson took strike three and McDonald lined out to first to end the game. The Sox had won it 6-3.

Hero of the Night is Mo Vaughn. He drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning.

Darren Lewis was 1 for 3 with a hit by pitch and an rbi.

Mike Benjamin was 1 for 1 at the plate with a run scored.

John Wasdin got the win with a full scoreless inning.

Steve Avery retired the only man he faced.

Jim Corsi tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

Tom Gordon earned his second save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bad:

Reggie Jefferson was 0 for 1 at the plate.

The Ugly:

John Valentin was just 1 for 5 but scored a run.

Jason Varitek was just 1 for 5 with a strikeout but scored a run.

Damon Buford was just 1 for 4 with 2 strikeouts but walked and scored a run.

Donnie Sadler was 0 for 1 but drove in a run.

Tim Wakefield lasted just 5 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs for a no-decision.

Final Thoughts:

Never a bad thing to win the first two games of the season. The bullpen saved the day today after Wakefield was gone in the sixth inning, they didn't give an inch. The offense was pretty good and Vaughn is looking for a new contract after the season. If he has a great year, how can you not re-sign him? Garciaparra continues to be the best leadoff hitter in the game and hopefully that can keep up through the season. The advantage of Gordon in the bullpen has already shown as he's looked very good so far. Getting him out of the rotation could be the best decision made by Sox manager Jimy Williams. All in all it was a good win and hopefully the Sox can keep the momentum going as they now travel to Seattle for a three game set with the reigning AL West champion Mariners. Derek Lowe gets the start against his former team against Ken Cloude of the Mariners. The game begins tomorrow night at 10:05 PM Eastern time at the Kingdome.

Martinez Dazzles on Opening Day (4/1/98)

So that's what an ace is like? After the Boston Red Sox let Roger Clemens walk at the end of 1996, they didn't get an ace pitcher for the 1997 season. Their 78-84 record on the season last year showed how well that went. After Sox GM traded for the National League's best pitcher in Pedro Martinez (1-0, 0.00 ERA), the Sox now have a legitimate ace again. Martinez was outstanding, tossing 7 shutout innings while striking out 11 Oakand A's. The Sox bats were silenced by Oakland starter Tom Candiotti but they managed to scratch out two runs. A sac fly by Darren Bragg put the Sox on top and a sac fly by John Valentin were all the runs the Sox would score. Dennis Eckersley made his return to Boston after 14 years with a scoreless eighth and new closer Tom Gordon slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth. The 1998 Red Sox started the season on the right foot with a 2-0 win over the A's at the Oakland Coliseum.

Candiotti got the ball in the top of the first and AL Rookie of the Year Nomar Garciaparra led off by lining back to the mound. John Valentin struck out swinging on a knuckleball down and away but Mo Vaughn lined a single to right for the season's first hit. Reggie Jefferson flied out to deep center to end the inning. Martinez made his Red Sox debut in the bottom of the first and Rickey Henderson led off with a fly out to left. Dave Magadan struck out looking and shook his head walking back to the dugout before Ben Grieve grounded out to second to end the inning.

Troy O'Leary opened the top of the second inning by trying to pull the ball, ending up grounding out to second. Scott Hatteberg popped up to second and Darren Lewis made his Red Sox debut by popping up to first in foul territory to end the inning. Old pal Matt Stairs struck out swinging to open the bottom of the second before Jason Giambi also went down hacking. Scott Spiezio lined out to right to end the inning.

Darren Bragg went down hacking to begin the top of the third and 22 year old rookie Donnie Sadler made his major league debut by grounding out to third. Nomar flied out to center to end the inning. AJ Hinch grounded out to third to begin the bottom of the third before Jason McDonald struck out swinging. Rafael Bournigal flied out to left to end the inning.

The Sox threatened in the top of the fourth as Valentin flied out to center to start. Vaughn and Jefferson stroked back to back singles and Mo moved to third on the O'Leary liner to right. Jefferson took second on a passed ball but Hatteberg grounded out to first to end the inning. Henderson grounded out to second to start the bottom of the fourth and Magadan also grounded out to second. Grieve singled to right and Stairs walked, but Giambi whiffed to end the inning.

The Sox struck first in the top of the fifth as Lewis reached on an error by Spiezio to begin. A wild pitch moved Lewis to third and he scored on the Bragg sac fly. Sadler flied out to center and Nomar grounded out to short to end the inning but it was 1-0 Sox.

More than enough cushion for Martinez as he turned up the heat to freeze Spiezio to start the bottom of the fifth. Hinch and McDonald both went down swinging to end the inning.

Boston threatened again in the top of the sixth as Valentin singled to left to begin. Vaughn took strike three but Jefferson flied out to left. O'Leary singled Valentin to third but Hatteberg grounded out to second to end the inning. Bournigal flied out to right to start the bottom of the sixth but Henderson walked. Magadan flied out to center and Grieve struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox struck again in the top of the seventh as Lewis beat out an infield single to short and Bragg doubled him to third. Sadler was plunked to load the bases but Lewis was thrown out at home on a force by Nomar. Valentin scored Bragg with a sac fly to increase the lead but Vaughn grounded out to second to end the inning with the Sox ahead 2-0.

The A's mounted a threat in the bottom of the seventh as Stairs and Giambi stroked back to back singles to start. Spiezio dropped down a bunt to move both runners over but Martinez struck out Hinch swinging on a nasty curveball. McDonald took strike three to end the inning. That was it for Martinez who was great in his first start, tossing 7 shutout innings while striking out 11 batters.

Mike Mohler came in to pitch the top of the eighth and Jim Leyritz pinch hit for Jefferson to start. Leyritz struck out swinging and O'Leary went down hacking as well. Hatteberg grounded out to short to end the inning. Dennis Eckersley made his first appearance for the Sox in 14 years in the bottom of the eighth and old buddy Shane Mack pinch hit for Bournigal. Mack flied out to left but Henderson singled to left. Henderson stole second and moved to third on the grounder by Magadan. Sox manager Jimy Williams took no chances and brought in new closer Tom Gordon for the four out save. Grieve grounded out to second to end the inning.

Jason Wood took over at short with TJ Mathews now on the mound for the top of the ninth. Lewis flied out to center, Bragg struck out swinging and Sadler flied out to center to end the inning. Gordon got Stairs to ground out to short to start the bottom of the ninth and Giambi grounded out to third. Spiezio whiffed to end the game. The Sox had won Opening Day 2-0.

Final Thoughts:

I think the Sox have found their new ace. After losing Roger Clemens in 1996, the Sox were desperate for a new ace and they may have found one in Martinez. Pedro was outstanding today and this is the guy they need if they hope to be good again. The offense was nothing to write home about on Opening Day but with Pedro on the mound, the little that they did was just enough. It was good to see Donnie Sadler make his ML debut and get on base even if it wasn't conventionally. Gordon didn't look good as a starter last year but he looked great in relief today. If he can turn into a dependable relief pitcher, that's a big shot in the arm for this team. Its always good to win on Opening Day to start the season off on a positive note and the Sox look to continue their winning ways tomorrow afternoon against the A's. Tim Wakefield makes his season debut for the Sox up against A's ace Kenny Rogers at 3:15 PM Eastern time at Oakland Coliseum.

Sox Pound Twins at Fenway (8/16/97)

What a power surge by the Boston Red Sox. Not much has gone right this season on the pitching side but the offense has been the only thing worth watching this season. Tonight the Sox laid waste to the Minnesota Twins by pounding out 12 hits and 12 runs. 6 different batters drove in runs while Tim Wakefield (7-14, 4.33 ERA) tossed 5 1/3 gutty innings before the bullpen slammed the door. When the dust settled the Sox had won the game 12-4 at Fenway Park.

Wakefield took the ball in the bottom of the first inning and Chuck Knoblauch went down swinging to start. Rich Becker lined out to first but the strike three ball to Paul Molitor got away, allowing Paul to reach first on the passed ball. Molitor swiped second but Matt Lawton grounded out to first to end the inning. The Sox struck first against Shane Bowers in the bottom of the first inning as Nomar Garciaparra flied out to center to start. John Valentin popped up to short but Mo Vaughn was hit with a pitch. Reggie Jefferson doubled home Mo to put the Sox on top. Wil Cordero flied out to center to end the inning with the Sox ahead 1-0.

The Twins fought right back in the top of the second as Scott Stahoviak was hit with a pitch to start. Ron Coomer got a base hit but Brent Brede popped up to short. Damien Miller hit a routine grounder back to the mound but Wakefield tripped on the ball and went head over heels for an error that scored Stahoviak. A passed ball moved Miller to second and Danny Hocking singled home both runners to give the Twins the lead. Knoblauch banged into a double play to end the inning but the Twins were up 3-1.

The Sox failed to respond in the bottom of the second as Troy O'Leary grounded out to first to start. Bill Haselman singled to left but Darren Bragg flied out to center. Jeff Frye also flied out to center to end the inning.

Wakefield recovered in the top of the third as Becker grounded out to first to start. Molitor beat out an infield single and advanced to second on the fly out to deep center by Lawton. Stahoviak whiffed to end the inning. The Sox poured it on in the bottom of the third as Nomar walked to start. Valentin singled to center and Vaughn walked to load the bases with nobody out. Jefferson beat out a double play ball to score Nomar and Cordero cleared the bases with a triple to give the Sox the lead and chase Bowers. Rich Robertson came in and O'Leary popped up to third. Haselman doubled home Cordero to increase the lead before Bragg grounded out to third to end the inning with the Sox ahead 5-3.

Wakefield got in trouble in the top of the fourth inning although Coomer grounded out to short to start. Brede whiffed but Miller and Hocking stroked back to back singles. Knoblauch popped up to second to end the inning. Frye singled to center to start the bottom of the fourth but was forced at second by Nomar. Valentin flied out to left but Nomar swiped second. Vaughn whiffed to end the inning.

The Twins got a run back in the top of the fifth although Becker and Molitor both flied out to right to begin. Lawton hit a routine grounder to Vaughn but he threw his glove at the ball and screamed at it for an error. Stahoviak walked and Coomer singled home Lawton for an unearned run. Brede flied out to left to end the inning with the Sox still ahead 5-4.

The Sox went quietly in the bottom of the fifth as Jefferson grounded out to first to start. Cordro flied out to right and O'Leary flied out to center to end the inning.

Wakefield returned briefly for the top of the sixth as Miller grounded out to short to start. Hocking and Knoblauch stroked back to back singles and that was it for Wakefield. He allowed 4 runs but only 1 earned in 5 1/3 innings of work. John Wasdin came in and got Becker to pop up to third and Molitor to fly out to center to end the inning.

Nothing happened in the bottom of the sixth as Haselman grounded out to short to start. Bragg whiffed but Frye singled to left. Nomar flied out to center to end the inning.

Wasdin returned for the top of the seventh and struck out Lawson swinging to start. Stahoviak popped up to short and Coomer grounded out to third to end the inning. The Sox iced the game in the bottom of the seventh with a huge rally. Valentin doubled off the Monster to start then Ritchie threw away a double play ball by Vaughn to keep things going. Vaughn moved to second on the grounder by Jefferson and Cordero was intentionally walked to load the bases but also set up the double play. O'Leary made the Twins pay with a double to center to score Valentin and Vaughn. Haselman flied out to left but Cordero scored and O'Leary moved to third. Bragg hit a routine grounder to first but that ball was booted to score O'Leary and chase Robertson. Todd Ritchie poured gas on the fire as Frye singled Bragg to third and a wild pitch scored Darren plus moved Jeff to second. Nomar doubled home Frye and Valentin single home Nomar. Vaughn walked to chase the incompetent Ritchie Eddie Guardado came in to get Jefferson to ground into a force to end the inning but the Sox scored 7 runs to put the game away.

With the game now well in hand, Joe Hudson came in for the top of the eighth inning. Brede greeted him with a base hit to left but Miller flied out to right. Hocking banged into a double play to end the inning. The Sox went quietly in the bottom of the eighth as Cordero flied out to center to start. O'Leary also flied out to center and Haselman flied out to right to end the inning.

Hudson returned to finish off the Twins in the top of the ninth as the Sox made some weird defensive moves. Reggie Jefferson left the DH spot to play first, replacing Vaughn. Mike Benjamin took over at short for Nomar and Jose Malave took over for Cordero in left. Knoblauch groundd out to second to start but Becker got a base hit to right. Molitor walked but Lawton banged into a double play to end the game. The Sox had won the game 12-4

Hero of The Night is a tough one with so much offense. I gotta go with Troy O'Leary. They walked Cordero to get to him and he responded with a big "screw you" with a 2 run double.

Nomar Garciaparra was just 1 for 4 but walked, stole a base, drove in a run and scored twice.

Reggie Jefferson was just 1 for 5 but drove in a run and scored.

Wil Cordero was just 1 for 4 but walked, drove in 2 runs and scored twice.

Darren Bragg was 0 for 4 but scored a run.

Time Wakefield got the win by allowing 4 runs in 5 1/3 innings but only one run was earned.



Honorable Mention:

Mike Benjamin played shortstop in the top of the ninth.

Jose Malave played left field in the top of the ninth.




Final Thoughts:

Don't look now but the Sox are inching closer to .500. Considering they have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball, this should be classified as a miracle. If only Sox general manager Dan Duquette got an actual ace after letting Roger Clemens walk rather than Steve F'n Avery. Wakefield didn't really pitch well but was hampered by errors. I wish the Sox has this kind of offense next year if the Sox go get a few pitchers they desperately need. Nomar looks like he'll win Rookie of The Year if he keeps up this pace. The win improved the Sox to 61-63, nowhere near a playoff spot. Tomorrow afternoon the Sox look to make it 4 wins in a row and a sweep over the Twins when they sent Aaron Sele (11-9) to the mound up against Concord, NH native Bob Tewksbury at 1:05 PM at Fenway Park.

Tigers Maul Sox, Snap Streak (6/20/97)

So much for the Boston Red Sox 4 game winning streak. The normally punchless Detroit Tigers put a hurting on the Sox pitchers. Tim Wakefield (2-7, 5.48 ERA) got creamed in just 2 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. The bullpen got lit up for 6 runs of their own. The Sox offense did manage 6 runs and 10 hits off Detroit pitching but the Tigers offense pounded out 12 runs on 16 hits to knock out the Sox 12-6 at Tiger Stadium.

Justin Thompson got the start for Detroit and Nomar Garciaparra grounded out to short to start. Jeff Frye also grounded out to short and Mike Stanley whiffed to end the inning. Wakefield somehow cruised in the bottom of the first inning as Brian Hunter flied out to right to begin. Curtis Pride whiffed before Tony Clark lined out to short to end the inning.

The Sox struck first in the top of the second although Wil Cordero grounded out to third to begin. Tim Naehring singled to right but John Valentin popped up to short. Shane Mack beat out an infield single and Scott Hatteberg walked to load the bases. Jesus Tavarez got his first start with the Sox and he hit a routine grounder to short, but Deivi Cruz bobbled it allowing Naehring to score and reloading the bases. Nomar singled home Mack and Frye walked home Hatteberg. With a chance to break the game open...Stanley lined out to center to end the inning but the Sox led 3-0.

The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the second in about 30 seconds. Bob Hamelin singled to left before Phil Nevin doubled him to third. Melvin Nieves then crushed a 5,000,000 foot home run into the Atlantic Ocean to tie the game. Damion Easley popped up to second before Raul Casanova doubled to right. Deivi Cruz doubled off the Monster to give the Tigers the lead. Hunter whiffed and Pride grounded out to second but the Tigers took the lead 4-3.

The Sox took command in the top of the third as Cordero flied out to right to start. Naehring, Valentin and Mack all singled to load the bases. Hatteberg walked to tie the game and with a chance to do some serious damage.... Tavarez flied out to right although Valentin scored the go-ahead run. Nomar grounded out to third to end the inning with the Sox ahead 5-4.

The Tigers knocked Wakefield out in the bottom of the third as Clark walked to start. Hamelin flied out to right but Nevin smashed a 40,000 foot home run to give the Tigers the lead and chase Wakefield. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up 6 runs. Mark Brandenburg came in and whiffed Nieves before Easley lined out to left to end the inning with the Tigers up 6-5.

Frye grounded out to second to start the top of the fourth but Stanley walked. Cordero lined out to left and Naehring flied out to right to end the inning. The Tigers pounded the Sox in the bottom of the fourth although Casanova grounded back to the mound to start. Cruz singled but was forced on the Hunter grounder. Hunter took off for second and Hatteberg threw the ball completely out of Fenway for an error to advance him to third. Pride singled home hunter and Clark singled Curtis to third. Hamelin singled home Pride to chase Brandenburg. Joe Hudson came in and got Nevin flied out to right to end the inning with the Tigers up 8-5.

Somehow the Sox fought back in the top of the fifth as Valentin grounded out to second to start. Mack grounded out to short but Hatteberg singled to right. Tavarez walked and Nomar doubled home Scott. With the tying run at second....Frye flied out to right to end the inning but it was 8-6 Tigers.

The Tigers were offended the Sox had the unmitigated audacity to try to come back by rallying in the bottom of the fifth. Nieves doubled to center and moved to third on the Easley grounder to chase Hudson. Heathcliff Slocumb came in and struck out Casanova, but Cruz singled home Nieves to increase the lead. Cruz stole second and third but Hunter grounded out to short to end the inning with the Tigers ahead 9-6.

AJ Sager came in to pitch the top of the sixth and Stanley grounded out to short to start. Cordero flied out to right but Naehring singled to left. Valentin flied out to right to end the inning. The Tigers rallied again in the bottom of the sixth although Pride grounded out to second to start. Clark singled, Hamelin walked and Nevin walked to load the bases. Easley popped up to first to end the inning.

Troy O'Leary pinch hit for Mack to open the top of the seventh, flying out to right. Hatteberg singled to right and Darren Bragg pinch hit for Tavarez. Bragg and Nomar both grounded out to short to end the inning. John Wasdin got the call for the bottom of the seventh and he took a beating too. Casanova grounded out to short but Cruz walked. Cruz moved to second on the Hunter grounder and scored on the Pride triple. Clark singled home Pride to increase the lead. Hamelin grounded back to the mound to end the inning with the Tigers ahead 11-6.

The Sox surrendered in the top of the eighth as Frye walked to start but Stanley banged into a double play. Cordero lined out to center to end the inning. The Tigers continued to pummel Wasdin in the bottom of the eighth as Nevin walked to start. Somehow Nieves went down hacking but Easley doubled Nevin to third. Casanova was intentionally walked to load the bases and Cruz scored Nevin with a sac fly to wrap up the scoring. Hunter whiffed to end the inning with the Tigers up 12-6.

The Sox beat the ball in the dirt to end the game in the top of the ninth. Naehring grounded out to short, Valentin grounded out to third and O'Leary grounded out to second to end the game. The normally impotent Tigers knocked the Sox goofy 12-6.

Jackass of the Night could be any of the pitchers but I'll go with Tim Wakefield. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings and allowed 6 runs, putting the Sox in a hole they couldn't get out of.

Tim Naehring was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored.

Shane Mack was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Scott Hatteberg was 2 for 2 with 2 walks, an rbi and 2 runs scored.

Jesus Tavararez walked and drove in a run in 2 at bats.



The Bad:

Wil Cordero was 0 for 5.

Troy O'Leary was 0 for 2.

Darren Bragg was 0 for 1.

Mark Brandenburg allowed 2 runs in just 1 1/3 innings.

Joe Hudson was charged with a run in 2/3 of an inning.

John Wasdin allowed 3 runs in 2 innings.



The Ugly:

Jeff Frye was 0 for 3 but walked twice and drove in a run.

Mike Stanley was 0 for 4 but walked.

John Valentin was just 1 for 5 but scored a run.

Heathcliff Slocumb allowed an inherited runner to score but none of his own in 1 2/3 innings.




Final Thoughts:

It was too good to be true and sure enough the real Red Sox showed up tonight. It was nice to see the Sox string a few victories in a row but the pitching is such trash that it wasn't going to last. Its sad to see the pitching fall apart this hard considering how hard the offense is working to keep them in games. Not only did the Sox get lit up, it was from a team that doesn't really hit well to boot. Wakefield is a long way from his 1995 season and maybe its time to cut the chord with him. Then again, nobody else is pitching well either so its not like he's the problem. The less said of this disaster the better. The loss dropped the Sox to 31-39, 16 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East. The Sox look for revenge tomorrow night against the Tigers when they send Vaughn Eshelman to the mound against Brian Moehler at 8:05 PM Eastern time at Tigers Stadium.

Red Sox Crush Jones, Mets (6/15/97)

Who saw THIS coming? One of the worst teams in baseball defeated one of the best pitchers in the game as the Boston Red Sox laid waste to the bungholes of Bobby Jones and the New York Mets. Jones came into the game 11-2 but was tagged for 5 runs in just 4 innings. The Sox scored another 5 runs off the Mets bullpen to pound out 10 total runs and 13 hits. Meanwhile Vaughn Eshelman (1-1, 4.00 ERA) won his first game of the season with 7 strong innings, allowing just 1 run to a pretty good Mets lineup. Kerry Lacy and Joe Hudson slammed the door and the Sox had a rare good day with a 10-1 victory over the Mets at Shea Stadium.

Jones got the ball in the top of the first and Nomar Garciaparra led off with a liner to center. Darren Bragg lined out to left and Mo Vaughn took strike three to end the inning. Eshelman got the ball in the bottom of the first as Bernard Gilkey ate up third baseman Tim Naehring on a line drive to start. Eshelman had Gilkey picked off but Vaughn threw the ball away allowing Bernard to reach third. Carlos Baerga grounded out to third and John Olerud grounded out to short. Todd Hundley struck out swinging to end the inning.

Naehring struck out swinging to start the top of the second and Scott Hatteberg lined out to right. John Valentin got a base hit to left and Troy O'Leary struck out swinging to end the inning. The Mets struck first in the bottom of the second as Carl Everett caught Naehring asleep with a bunt single to start. Alex Ochoa doubled off the second base bag and Matt Franco grounded out to short to move Everett. Luis Lopez was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jones. Gilkey lined out to center to end the inning with the Mets up 1-0.

The Sox exploded in the top of the third as Shane Mack took strike three to start. Eshelman somehow beat out a bunt down the third base line and Garciaparra belted his ninth home run of the year to put the Sox on top. Bragg doubled to center and Vaughn drilled a base hit to left to score him. Naehring doubled to left and Hatteberg walked to load the bases. Valentin hit a routine grounder to third and Franco tried to throw home....instead the threw the ball away for an error to score Vaughn and and Naehring. Unfortunately Vaughn came up limping and had to leave the game. The Sox can NOT afford to lose him. O'Leary was intentionally walked and the gamble worked as Mack grounded into a double play to end the inning with the Sox ahead 5-1.

Mike Stanley took over for Vaughn at first to start the bottom of the third as Baerga grounded out to third to start. Olerud flied out to left and Hundley took strike three to end the inning.

Eshelman bunted foul for strike three to start the top of the fourth and Garciaparra struck out swinging. Bragg flied out to left to end the inning. Everett grounded back to the mound to start the bottom of the fourth and Ochoa grounded out to third. Franco grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Sox got another run in the top of the fifth with Barry Manuel now on the mound. Stanley lined out to right and Naehring grounded out to first. ESPN analysts Joe Morgan and Jon Miller were discussing how Sam Lacy was assigned to over Jackie Robinson in Spring Training in Havana, Cuba. Both Jackie and Sam were denied service and had to stay in a fleabag motel. In real time, Hatteberg then pounded his fourth home run of the season to increase the lead. Valentin got a base hit to center but O'Leary lined out to center to end the inning with the Sox up 6-1.

Lopez grounded out to short to start the bottom of the fifth and Manuel took strike three. Gilkey lined out to left to end the inning.

Mack beat out a roller to second to start the top of the sixth but Eshelman's bunt was too hard, forcing Shane at second. Eshelman took second on a balk but was doubled off on the Garciaparra liner to Franco to end the inning. Baerga lined out to right to start the bottom of the sixth and Olerud lined out to left. Hundley walked and Everett doubled to left, but Ochoa grounded out to first to end the inning.

The Sox rallied in the top of the seventh as Bragg popped up to right to start. Stanley walked and Naehring got a base hit to right. Hatteberg struck out swinging but Valentin got a base hit to right. The throw beat Stanley to the plate but Hundley dropped the ball for an error to score Mike. O'Leary was intentionally walked to get to Mack and Shane made them pay with a double to left to score Naehring & Valentin. Eshelman grounded out to second to end the inning with the Sox up 9-1.

Eshelman returned for one final inning in the bottom of the seventh and Lopez struck out swinging. Kevin Morgan made his ML debut pinch hitting for Manuel and popped up to short to end the inning. Eshelman was outstanding, allowing just one run off four hits and a walk in seven innings of work.

The Sox rallied in the top of the eighth with Alberto Castillo behind the plate and Takashi Kashiwada now on the mound. Garciaparra doubled into the right field corner then took third on the Bragg grounder to second. Stanley walked and Naehring hit a sac fly to left to score Garciaparra. Hatteberg flied out to center to end the inning with the Sox up 9-1.

Kerry Lacy came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Gilkey got a base hit to left to start. Baerga flied out to the centerfield warning track and Gilkey took second on defensive indifference. Olerud took strike three and Castillo lined out to right to end the inning.

Cory Lidle came in to pitch the top of the ninth and Valentin grounded out to short to start. O'Leary struck out swinging and Mack grounded out to third to end the inning. Joe Hudson came in to close out the bottom of the ninth and Everett grounded out to first to start. Ochoa grounded out to second and Steve Bieser pinch hit for Lidle. Bieser grounded out to first to end the game. The Sox had won it 10-1.

Hero of The Night is Vaughn Eshelman. He allowed just 1 run in 7 innings off 4 hits and a walk. He was also 1 for 4 with a run scored at the plate.

Final Thoughts:

The Sox are already without Wil Cordero for being a dumbass but now they lost Vaughn as well. Thankfully x-rays showed negative so there's no immediate danger but we'll see what the MRI results are when they get back to Boston. This season has been so bad that even when they knock out the best pitcher in the National League, hang 10 runs total on the Mets and have Vaughn Eshelman's best career start, they still find a way to sour it. Hopefully Vaughn is okay but who knows the way this year is going. Still, where was that from Eshelman the last two years? If he can come back from Pawtucket and pitch like that moving forward, they might have something here. Otherwie, this season is heading to hell in a hand basket so enjoy the small victories like tonight's when they happen. The win improved the Sox to 28-38, good for last place in the AL East. The Sox resume inter-league play tomorrow night when they come home to face the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time since the 1915 World Series.
