White Sox Walkoff on Red Sox (5/2/19)

The good news was the Boston Bruins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 4 of their second round NHL playoff series but the bad news was the Chicagon White Sox walked off the Boston Red Sox. Just when you think the Red Sox have turned the corner this season they fall flat on their face. For 8 innings the Red Sox led the lowly White Sox when yet another error committed by Rafael Devers led to a shocking 3 run walkoff home run by Nicky Delmonico of all people. It spoiled a good start by David Price but the 2019 Red Sox shot themselves in the foot again by dropping a 6-4 game to the White Sox at Commiskey Park.
                                               "Damn Delmonico"

The BoSox wasted no time scoring against Lucas Giolito in the top of the first inning. Andrew Benintendi struck out swinging but Mr. Mookie Betts singled to center. JD Martinez singled to right and Xander Bogaerts walked to load the bases. Rafael Devers scored Betts with a sac fly to give the BoSox the lead. Michael Chavis whiffed to end the inning but it was 1-0 BoSox.
                                                              Herculean sac fly

The White Sox answered in the bottom of the first as Leury Garcia doubled to center to start. Tim Anderson whiffed as Garcia moved to third on Jose Abreu's grounder but James McCann launched a 500,000 foot home run to give Chicago the lead. Old pal Yoan Moncada popped up to short to end the inning but it was 2-1 ChiSox.
                                                         Chicago takes the lead

The BoSox failed to respond in the top of the second as Mitch Moreland lined out to center to begin. Christian Vazquez whiffed and Jackie Bradley Jr grounded out to first to end the inning. Price turned up the heat in the bottom of the second as Jose Rondon lined out to center to begin. Yonder Alonso looked at strike three before Ryan Cordell whiffed to end the inning.

The Sox roared back in the top of the third as Benintendi blasted an opposite field home run to tie the game. Mr. Mookie singled and Martinez singled him to third to put runners at the corners. Bogaerts grounded out to third but Martinez moved to second. Devers grounded out to second but Betts scored and Martinez moved to third to give the Sox the lead. Chavis walked to put runners at the corners before Chavis swiped second. Moreland flied out to center to end the inning with the Sox up 3-2.
                                                         Benintendi gets the rally started

Price got Adam Engel to pop up to first to begin the bottom of the third but Garcia moved halfway to the cycle with a base hit. Garcia was erased on the Anderson force before Abreu flied out to center to end the inning.

Vazquez looked at strike three to open the top of the fourth before JBJ whiffed. Benintendi singled and took second on a wild pitch but Mr. Mookie lined out to center to end the inning. McCann walked to begin the bottom of the fourth but Moncada looked at strike three. Rondon whiffed and Alonso lined out to left to end the inning.

Martinez looked to start a rally with a base hit in the top of the fifth but Bogaerts popped up to second. Devers and Chavis both whiffed to end the inning. Cordell singled to begin the bottom of the fifth before Engel popped up to short. Garcia banged into a double play to end the inning.

Josh Osich came in to pitch the top of the sixth and Moreland looked at strike three to begin. Vazquez walked but JBJ banged into a double play. The White Sox struck back in the bottom of the sixth although Anderson grounded out to short to start. Abreu walked and McCann doubled to center. Abreu broke for home as JBJ heaved the ball to Bogaerts who fired it home.....OUT! Abreu was out at home and Price was one out away from escaping the mess. It didn't happen as Moncada singled McCann to third and Rondon singled him home to tie the game. Alonso grounded out to first to end the inning but it was tied 3-3. That was it for Price who couldn't hold the lead but still was able to throw 6 solid innings of 3 run ball.
                                               Couldn't hold the lead

The Sox answered back in the top of the seventh as Benintendi walked to begin. Evan Marshall came in for Osich and Mr. Mookie singled Benintendi to third. Martinez beat out a double play ball to score Benintendi with the go-ahead run. A wild pitch moved Martinez to second but Bogaerts whiffed. Devers was intentionally walked to get to the rookie Chavis but Michael flied out to center to end the inning with the Sox ahead 4-3.
                                                    Herculean groundout

It was up to the bullpen to get the final 9 outs and first up was Brandon Workman. Nicky Delmonico pinch hit for Cordell to open the bottom of the seventh but he grounded out to second. Engel popped up to third and Garcia whiffed to end the inning.

Garcia moved to right with Delmonico in left and Aaron Bummer on the mound for the top of the eighth. Moreland grounded out to short, Vazquez grounded out to first and JBJ whiffed to end the inning. Matt Barnes came on for the bottom of the eighth and threw straight smoke. Anderson and Abreu both whiffed before McCann looked at strike three to end the inning.

Benintendi grounded out to short to open the top of the ninth before Carson Fulmer came in to pitch. Mr. Mookie lined out to center but Martinez and Bogaerts drew back to back walks. Devers flied out to left to end the inning. Tzu-Wei Lin came in for defense at second with Sox closer Ryan Brasier on the mound for the bottom of the ninth. Brasier blew away Moncada to begin and Rondon hit a routine grounder to Devers at third.....who booted it for an error. The White Sox pounced as Alonso singled and Delmonico crushed his first home run of the year for the walkoff bomb to end the game. For 8 1/3 innings the Red Sox were in command but an error and two swings of the bat gave Chicago the 6-4 victory over the stunned Red Sox.
                                                              Dammit

Jackass of the Night is Ryan Brasier. Devers error didn't help but Ryan proceeded to give up the single to Alonso and the walkoff to Delmonico after.
                                                       Jackass Brasier

Final Thoughts:

Can we go back to 2015 please? At least we knew that team was going to be hot garbage with their horrendous starting rotation. This year's team just finds a way to lose again and again. Up until the 9th inning this game looked in the bag but once again they threw up on themselves at the worst of times. They're never going to get closer to the Tampa Bay Rays or New York Yankees when they waste games they're actually in instead of being down 50 runs by the fourth inning like most of April. The loss drops the BoSox to 14-18, 6 games behind Tampa for first place in the AL East. The worst part is now the White Sox may sweep the series now that the incompetent Chris Sale (0-5, 6.30 ERA) goes tomorrow night against Reynaldo Lopez. The loss takes place at 8:10 PM at Commiskey Park.
