Yankees Shut Down Lifeless Sox (8/16/20)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made a roster move before tonight's game. Chris Mazza was called up from the Alternate Training Site to start tonight's game against the New York Yankees. To make room for Chris, newly acquired infielder Christian Arroyo was placed on the Injured List for Covid testing and Dylan Covey was sent to the Alternate Training Site. Just one bum after another starting for the Sox, whoopie.

The good news for the Red Sox was they held the New York Yankees to just four runs in tonight's game! The bad news was they only scratched out two of their own as the Yankees continued their dominance over the Red Sox. JA Happ isn't fooling anyone this year but he held the incompetent Red Sox offense to just 1 run in 5 2/3 innings. The normally hittable Yankee bullpen held the Sox to just an unearned run the rest of the way. Meanwhile the Sox "opener" Chris Mazza was tortured for 4 runs in just 3 innings. Somehow the horrible Sox bullpen slammed the door the rest of the way but the damage was done as the Yankees continued to eat the Sox alive 4-2 at Yankee Stadium.

Somehow Kevin Pillar drew a walk to open the top of the first but naturally Rafael Devers banged into a double play. JD Martinez grounded out to short to end the inning. The Yankees easily got to Mazza in the bottom of the first as Aaron Hicks lined out to left to start. Gio Urshela singled to left and Mike Tauchman singled to center but Gleyber Torres whiffed. Mike Ford scored Urshela with a single to put the Yankees up for good 5 batters into the game. Gary Sanchez whiffed to end the inning but the Yankees were up 1-0.
                                                          Ford drives in a run

The Sox did nothing in the top of the second as Xander Bogaerts flied out to center to start. Christian Vazquez popped up to third but Alex Verdugo singled to right. Michael Chavis whiffed to end the inning. The Yankees struck again in the bottom of the second as Brett Gardner walked to start. Clint Frazier grounded out to third and Tyler Wade took strike three, but Hicks doubled home Gardner to increase the lead. Urshela grounded out to short to end the inning with the Yankees up 2-0.
                                                 Hicks drives in a run

The Sox somehow struck back in the top of the third as Kevin Plawecki grounded out to short to start. Jonathan Arauz flied out to center but Pillar crushed his second home run of the season to cut the lead. Devers grounded out to short to end the inning but the Sox were down 2-1.
                                                      Pillar hits one out

The Yankees iced the game in the bottom of the third as Tauchman singled to left but was thrown out at second by Verdugo trying to stretch. It didn't matter as Torres singled and Ford pounded a home run all the way into Lake George to increase the lead. Sanchez singled to left but Gardner flied out to center. Frazier whiffed to end the inning and once again the "opener" stunk the joint out as Chris lasted just 3 innings while allowing 4 runs. The Yankees led 4-1 and it was all but over.
                                                   Mazza lasts just 3 innings

The Sox tried to rally in the top of the fourth as Martinez singled to left. Bogaerts whiffed and Vazquez banged into a double play to end the inning. Ryan Weber got the ball in the bottom of the fourth and Wade grounded out to short to start. Hicks flied out to center and Urshela took strike three to end the inning.

The Sox did nothing in the top of the fifth as Verdugo grounded out to first to start. Chavis whiffed and Plawecki popped up to short to end the inning. Tauchman grounded out to second to start the bottom of the fifth but Torres singled to short. Ford banged into a double play to end the inning.

The Sox tried to fight back in the top of the sixth as Arauz flied out to right to start. Pillar lined out to center but Devers walked to chase Happ. Adam Ottavino ca,e in and walked Martinez but Bogaerts lined back to the mound to end the inning.

Weber stayed strong in the bottom of the sixth as Sanchez grounded out to short to start. Gardner grounded out to short but Frazier singled to left. Wade lined out to second to end the inning. Good for Weber to come in and do well after getting lit up as a starter previously.

The Sox blew another chance to get back in the game in the top of the seventh as Vazquez popped up to second to start. Chad Green came in and Verdugo greeted him with a double to right. Mitch Moreland pinch hit for Chavis and walked, but Plawecki popped up to third. Verdugo swiped third but Arauz lined out to left to end the inning. Ryan Brasier came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and got in trouble. Hicks walked to start but Urshela lined out to center and Tauchman whiffed. Torres walked and Arauz botched a force out to load the bases on the error. Sanchez took strike three to end the inning.

The Sox did nothing in the top of the eighth as Pillar grounded out to third to start. Devers and Martinez both whiffed to end the inning. Marcus Walden came in for the bottom of the eighth and Gardner lined out to left to start. Frazier grounded out to third and Wade grounded out to short to end the inning.

Somehow the Sox tried to rally against Yankees closer Zack Britton in the top of the ninth. Bogaerts whiffed to start but Vazquez doubled to center. Verdugo whiffed and Jose Peraza pinch hit for Moreland. A wild pitch moved Vazquez to third and Peraza hit the game ending grounder to Britton...BOOTED FOR AN ERROR! Vazquez scored and Peraza took first to bring the tying run to the plate. A passed ball moved Peraza to second but Plawecki whiffed to end the game. The Yankees held on to win 4-2 to hand the Sox their 7th straight loss.
                                                       Yankees win again

Jackass of the Night is Kevin Plawecki. He left a ton of men on base and struck out with the game on the line.

The Good:

Kevin Pillar was 1 for 3 with a walk and solo home run.

JD Martinez was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Alex Verdugo was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.

Mitch Moreland walked as a pinch hitter.

Ryan Weber tossed 3 scoreless innings.

Ryan Brasier pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Marcus Walden pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The Bad:

Xander Bogaerts was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Michael Chavis was 0 for 2 with 2 strikeouts.

Jonathan Arauz was 0 for 3 with an error.

Chris Mazza allowed 4 runs in 3 innings.

The Ugly:

Rafael Devers was 0 for 3 with a strikeout but walked.

Christian Vazquez was just 1 for 4 but scored a run.

Jose Peraza reached on an error and took second on a passed ball as a pinch hitter.

Final Thoughts:

Not only have the Sox lost seven games in a row, barely any of them were even competitive. At least the Sox were in the game this time thanks to Weber, Brasier and Walden. As was the case for most of the season, the Sox bats went silent again. Literally they have no scored more than 8 runs since Opening Day. They had their chances to get back in the game in this one but couldn't get the clutch hit with men on base. Compare that to the Yankees who hit balls to Jupiter with men on base almost effortlessly. What else needs to be said apart from this team doesn't have what it takes to win? The worst part is there's still 38 games left of this garbage to endure. The loss drops the Sox to 6-16, last place in the AL East. Tomorrow night the Yankees complete the sweep when Jordan Montgomery shuts down the Sox and Martin Perez (2-2) takes the beating at 7:05 PM at Yankee Stadium.
