Senators Big Third Inning Leads to Sox Defeat (4/11/70)

Its amazing how one big inning out of nine can lead to a defeat but that's what happened to the Boston Red Sox. Sonny Siebert (0-1, 7.20 ERA) was tagged for 4 runs in the bottom of the third by the Washington Senators, mainly from a 3 run Frank Howard home run. Thanks to the pitching of Washington starter Dick Bosman, the four runs were just enough for them. The Sox bats were relatively quiet as they could only scratch out three runs during the game. The Sox actually outhit the Senators 9 to 6 but couldn't get the clutch one they needed. When it was over the Senators had beaten the Sox 4-3 at Robert F Kennedy Stadium.
"CAN YOU BUMS GET A CLUTCH HIT???"

Bosman got the ball in the top of the first and Mike Andrews grounded out to third to start. Reggie Smith struck out swinging and Carl Yastrzemski flied out to left to end the inning. Siebert made the Senators beat the ball in the dirt in the bottom of the first inning as Del Unser led off with a grounder to short. Ed Brinkman grounded out to second and Frank Howard grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Sox struck first in the top of the second although George Scott flied out to center to start. Rico Petrocelli flied out to right but Tony Conigliaro walked. Luis Alvarado doubled home Tony C and Jerry Moses singled home Alvarado to increase the lead. Siebert grounded out to second to end the inning with the Sox ahead 2-0.

Mike Epstein struck out swinging to open the bottom of the second and Lee Maye grounded out to second. Ken McMullen struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox beat the ball in the dirt in the top of the third as Andrews grounded out to third to start. Both Smith and Yaz grounded out to second to end the inning. The Senators exploded in the bottom of the third as Bernie Allen doubled to right to start. John Roseboro lined a base hit to center to score Allen and cut the lead. Bosman dropped down a bunt to move Roseboro to second but Unser struck out swinging. A wild pitch moved Roseboro to third and Brinkman walked. Howard then iced the game with a 3 run bomb to put the Senators up big. Epstein walked and Maye popped up to second to end the inning with the Senators up 4-2.
                                                        Home run Howard

The Sox failed to fight back in the top of the fourth although Scott walked to start. Petrocelli forced Scott at second but Tony C hit one up the elevator shaft. Alvarado lined out to third to end the inning. Siebert recovered in the bottom of the fourth as McMullen grounded back to the mound to start. Allen grounded out to first but Roseboro walked. Bosman grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the fifth although Moses popped up to short to start. Siebert grounded out to short but Andrews beat out an infield single to third. Smith singled to left and Yaz walked to load the bases, but Scott popped up to first to end the inning. The Senators tried to rally when Unser singled to right to start the bottom of the fifth and Brinkman singled Del to third. Howard hit a ground ball to short but Petrocelli came to home to get Unser with a fielder's choice. Epstein banged into a double play to end the inning.

The Sox fought back in the top of the sixth although Petrocelli popped up to first to start.  Tony C singled to center and Alvarado doubled him home to cut the lead. Moses hit one up the elevator shaft and Sox manager Eddie Kasko needed the offense by having Mike Derrick pinch hit for Siebert. A wild pitch moved Alvarado to third but Derrick took strike three to end the inning, I could have done that! Still, the Sox had cut the deficit and trailed 4-3.
                                                         Swing the bat Derrick!

Ken Brett took over on the mound for the bottom of the sixth and Maye struck out swinging to start. McMullen watched strike three go by and Allen struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Sox blew yet another rally in the top of the seventh as Andrews grounded out to short to start. Smith grounded out to third but Yaz and Scott stroked back to back singles. Petrocelli grounded into a force to end the inning. Roseboro caught the Sox asleep with a bunt single to start the bottom of the seventh but Bosman's bunt attempt got Roseboro thrown out at second. Pedro Ramos pinch ran for Bosman and he was forced at second by Unser. Brinkman flied out to center to end the inning.

Ramos took over on the mound for the top of the eighth and Tony C lined out to center to start. Alvarado took strike three and Moses struck out swinging to end the inning. Brett returned for the bottom of the eighth and Howard grounded out to short to start. Epstein struck out swinging and Maye flied out to right to end the inning. Kudos to Brett to hold the Senators scoreless after Siebert left the game.
                                                         Good work Brett

Ed Stroud took over for Howard in left for the top of the ninth and Dick Schofield pinch hit for Brett to start the inning. Schofield singled to right to put the tying run on but Andrews forced him at second. David Knowles came in for Ramos but all Smith could do was move Andrews to second with a grounder. Yaz struck out swinging to end the game. The Senators had won it 4-3.

Jackass of the Night is Sonny Siebert. Siebert lasted just 5 innings and gave up 4 runs, putting the Sox in a hole they couldn't dig out of.
                                                                Siebert the Jackass

The Good:

George Scott was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Luis Alvarado was 2 for 4 with 2 rbis and a run scored.

Dick Schofield singled as a pinch hitter.

Ken Brett tossed 3 scoreless innings.

The Bad:

Rico Petrocelli was 0 for 4.

Mike Derrick struck out as a pinch hitter.

The Ugly:

Mike Andrews was just 1 for 5.

Reggie Smith was just 1 for 5 with a strikeout.

Carl Yastrzemski was just 1 for 4 with a walk.

Jerry Moses was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout but drove in a run.

Final Thoughts:

That was a good game, the Sox just couldn't pull it out. Tip your hat to the Senators for shutting the Sox down after they took the lead. The Sox bats had their chances but couldn't get the clutch hit when it counted. Siebert made one mistake to Howard and that was the difference in the game. Ken Brett did a good job holding the fort but Siebert can't afford to make those kinds of mistakes to hitters as good as Howard. Everybody but Petrocelli (and Siebert) got hits in the game but rarely did they get one to tie the game. The Sox bats should be good enough to do some damage this season so it's frustrating to see them failing in a game like this. It was a bad night for Boston sports since the Boston Bruins lost Game 3 of their first round playoff series with the New York Rangers as well. The Sox look to rebound tomorrow night against the Senators when Gary Peters (1-0) takes on Casey Cox of the Senators. The game begins at 7:05 PM at Robert F Kennedy Stadium.
