Nothing like starting the home stretch with a victory for the Boston Red Sox. Gary Peters (10-8, 4.09) pitched one of his best games all year by blanking the California Angels in a complete game 5 hit shutout. The game was a pitcher's duel through seven innings with Peters taking on Greg Garrett of the Angels. Then the Sox suddenly exploded in the top of the eighth inning by chasing Garrett and scoring 5 runs off Ken Tatum, including a two run Carl Yastrzemski jack. Jerry Moses smashed a three run bomb in the top of the ninth and the Sox beat the Angels 8-0 at Anaheim Stadium.

Final Thoughts:
Good to start the month of August with a win but the Sox still appear hopelessly behind the Baltimore Orioles with two months to go. Still, got to win games to get back into things and this was a good win. Peters has been a .500 pitcher this year but this was definitely one of his best starts, holding the Angels to just 5 hits. Good to see Jerry Moses get that big home run and good for Yaz to get the one he did as well. The Sox can't win every game like this but its fun to see them pour it on in the later innings. Two straight shutout wins against the Angels is nothing to sneeze at. That also means the Angels are due so the Sox better score some runs tomorrow. The win improved the Sox to 53-49, 11 games behind the Orioles for first place in the AL East. The Sox look to sweep the Angels out of Anaheim tomorrow afternoon when Vicente Romo (6-1) takes on Tom Bradley of California. The game begins at 4:05 PM Eastern time at Anaheim Stadium.
