Tigers Pound McGlothen, Sox (4/17/73)

So much for that four game win streak to start the season for the Boston Red Sox. The Detroit Tigers handed the Sox their third straight loss including two in a row against Detroit. Lynn McGlothen got hammered for 6 runs in his season debut and got knocked out in the fifth inning after allowing 6 runs to the Tigers. Meanwhile Joe Coleman of Detroit held the Sox to just 3 runs in 7 innings. The trio of Tommy Harper, Carl Yastrzemski and Orlando Cepeda went 0 for 12 and John Hiller slammed the door in the ninth inning. It all added up to a 6-3 win by Detroit over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
4 wins followed by 3 losses?

McGlothen got the ball in the top of the first inning and Dick MacAuliffe struck out swinging to start. Bill Freehan walked but Al Kaline took strike three. Norm Cash grounded out to second to end the inning. Coleman got the ball in the bottom of the first and Tommy Harper popped up to third to start. Luis Aparicio doubled to left but Carl Yastrzemski flied out to right. Reggie Smith lined out to right to end the inning.

The Tigers struck first in the top of the second as Gates Brown doubled off the Monster to start. Willie Horton singled to center to score Brown but was thrown out at second trying to steal. Aurelio Rodriguez flied out to right and Mickey Stanley grounded out to second to end the inning with the Tigers up 1-0.

Aparicio singled to right to start the bottom of the third but Yaz forced him at second. Smith singled to right to move Yaz to third but was thrown out in a rundown. The Tigers pounced in the top of the fourth as Cash hit a home run all the way to Santo Domingo to start. Brown singled to center but Horton popped up to third in foul territory.                                                                    Home run Cash

The Sox failed to respond in the bottom of the fourth as Petrocelli grounded out to third to begin. Fisk lined out to left and Griffin grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Tigers chased McGlothen in the top of the fifth as Freehan singled to left and Kaline hit a home run all the way to Aruba to ice the game. That was it for McGlothen who didn't have it today as he was rocked for 6 runs in just 4 plus innings. Roger Moret came in to pitch and Cash flied out to center before Brown flied out to right. Horton walked but Rodriguez hit one up the elevator shaft to end the inning with the Tigers up 6-1.
                                                           Not his best stuff today

The Sox went quietly in the bottom of the fifth as Evans hit one up the elevator shaft to start. Harper popped up to third in foul territory and Aparicio grounded out to short to end the inning.

Stanley walked to open the top of the sixth but Brinkman took strike three. McAuliffe popped up to second but Freehan singled to right and Stanley beat the throw to third. Stanley took second on the throw and Kaline was intentionally walked to load the bases. Cash took strike three to end the inning. Yaz flied out to center to start the bottom of the sixth but Smith popped up to third in foul territory. Cepeda also popped up to third in foul territory to end the inning.

Frank Howard pinch hit for Brown to start the top of the seventh and flied out to left to start. Horton walked but Rodriguez flied out to left. Stanley grounded out to third to end the inning. The Sox showed some life in the bottom of the seventh as Petrocelli clobbered his 3rd home run of the season to cut the lead. Fisk then pounded his second home run of the day to cut the lead in half. Griffin grounded out to second but Evans walked. Harper forced Dwight at second but Aparicio flied out to right to end the inning with the Sox down 6-3.
                                                           Petrocelli hits one out

Brinkman grounded out to short to start the top of the eighth but Tony Taylor pinch hit for McAuliffe. Taylor popped up to first and Freehan grounded out to second to end the inning. John Hiller came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Yaz grounded out to first to start. Smith struck out swinging and Cepeda lined out to left to end the inning.

Kaline popped up to first to start the top of the ninth before Cash grounded out to first. Howard singled to left to chase Moret from the game. Bobby Bolin came in and Horton forced Howard at second to end the inning. Petrocelli popped up to center to start the bottom of the ninth before Fisk lined out to center. Griffin hit a roller to Hiller who threw the ball away for an error to move Doug to second. Evans popped up to third in foul territory to end the game. The Tigers had won it 6-3.

Jackass of the Night is Lynn McGlothen. He was lit up for 6 runs in 4 innings to put the Sox in a hole they couldn't climb out of.
                                                          McGlothen the Jackass

The Good:

Luis Aparicio was 2 for 4.

Carlton Fisk was 2 for 4 and both hits were home runs.

Doug Griffin was 2 for 4.

Dwight Evans was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Roger Moret tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Bobby Bolin got the final out of the ninth inning.

The Bad:

Tommy Harper was 0 for 4.

Carl Yastrzemski was 0 for 4.

Orlando Cepeda was 0 for 4.

The Ugly:

Reggie Smith was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Rico Petrocelli was just 1 for 4 but the one hit was a solo home run.

Final Thoughts:

Sometimes the offense just can't bop their way back and this was one of those games. Even though the Sox hit three home runs, they were all solo shots. McGlothen was so ineffective he put the Sox in a hole they couldn't climb out of. It was a valiant effort by Moret and Bolin to hold the fort after McGlothen left but the offense just couldn't do enough. Essentially Coleman and the Tiger relievers shut down the Boston attack by holding them to longballs. The Sox couldn't pull off a single rally and barely had guys on base all game. It was just one of those games where very little goes right. It was good to see Fisk hit two home runs but that's about it. The Sox look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon against the Tigers when Luis Tiant (2-0) gets the ball for the Sox against Jim Perry of Detroit. The game begins at 1:35 PM at Fenway Park.
