Sox Defeat Jays, Snap Streak (4/17/82)

So that's what winning is like? After dropping four straight games the Boston Red Sox broke their losing streak by hanging on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays. The Sox blitzed Toronto starter Mark Bomback for five runs in the bottom of the first led by a three run bomb by Glenn Hoffman. That would be the only offense for the Sox but it just happened to be enough. John Tudor (2-0, 1.80 ERA) allowed 3 first inning runs of his own but allowed nothing else for six innings. Mark Clear allowed a run but slammed the door in 3 innings of work. It all added up to a 5-4 victory over the Jays at Fenway Park.

The Jays wasted no time getting to Tudor in the top of the first inning as Damaso Garcia singled to left to start. Garth Iorg singled to right and Jesse Barfield tripled to center to clear the bases. Wayne Nordhagen hit a sac fly to left to score Barfield to increase the lead and Barry Bonnell drew a walk. Otto Velez took strike three and Buck Martinez popped up to short to end the inning with the Jays up 3-0.

The Sox answered in the bottom of the first against Bomback although Jerry Remy grounded out to short to start. Dwight Evans walked and Jim Rice singled in the hole at third but Carl Yastrzemski struck out swinging. Carney Lansford singled to center to score Evans and Dave Stapleton singled to center to score Rice. Glenn Hoffman then smashed his first home run of the season to give the Sox the lead. Rick Miller grounded out to first to end the inning with the Sox ahead 5-3.

Tudor settled down in the top of the second inning as Willie Upshaw struck out swinging to start. Alfredo Griffin flied out to center and Garcia grounded back to the mound to end the inning. Gary Allenson doubled to left to start the bottom of the second but stayed at second on the grounder to second by Remy. Allenson moved to third on the grounder to second by Evans but Rice also grounded out to second to end the inning.

Iorg flied out to center to start the top of the third but Barfield singled to left. Nordhagen hit into a double play to end the inning. Yaz grounded back to the mound to start the bottom of the third but Lansford doubled to center. Lansford moved to third on the grounder to second by Stapleton but Hoffman grounded out to third to end the inning.

Tudor got in trouble in the top of the fourth when Bonnell and Velez stroked back to back base hits to begin. Martinez hit a bullet but right to Remy who doubled off Bonnell. Upshaw grounded out to the busy Remy to end the inning. Miller grounded out to second to start the bottom of the fourth but Allenson walked. Remy struck out swinging and Evans grounded back to the mound to end the inning.

Tudor got in trouble again in the top of the fifth as Griffin singled in the hole at third to begin. Garcia singled to left but Iorg flied out to left to move Griffin to third. Barfield took strike three and Nordhagen flied out to left to end the inning. Rice grounded out to second to start the bottom of the fifth but Yaz tripled into the centerfield triangle. Lansford struck out swinging and Stapleton grounded out to third to end the inning.

Bonnell singled to left to start the top of the sixth but Velez struck out swinging. Martinez banged into a double play to end the inning. That was it for Tudor who turned in six solid innings after getting rocked in the first inning. Good for him to battle back and give the Jays nothing after allowing the 3 runs in the first.

Hoffman grounded out to short to start the bottom of the sixth but Miller singled to center. Allenson popped up to second but Remy singled to left. Evans forced Remy at second to end the inning.

Mark Clear came in to get tagged in the top of the seventh as Upshaw singled to left to start. Griffin forced Upshaw at second but Garcia singled Griffin all the way to third. Rance Mulliniks hit a ball to third but Griffin beat the throw home to score the run. Barfield took strike three and Nordhagen popped up to short to end the inning with the Jays now down 5-4.
                                                              Dammit Clear!

Dale Murray came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and Rice got plunked to start. Yaz flied out to left but Lansford pounded a double off the Monster. Stapleton was intentionally walked to load the bases and the gamble worked for Toronto as Hoffman banged into a double play to end the inning.

Lloyd Moseby pinch hit for Bonnell and singled to right to start the top of the eighth. John Mayberry pinch hit for Velez and walked. Tony Johnson ran for Mayberry but Martinez flied out to left. Upshaw grounded into a double play to end the inning. Miller flied out to left to start the bottom of the eighth although Allenson singled to right. Remy hit into a double play to end the inning.

Clear returned to finish the job in the top of the ninth and Hosken Powell pinch hit for Griffin only to ground back to the mound. Garcia popped up to first and Mulliniks struck out swinging to end the game. The Sox had won it 5-4.

Hero of the Night is Glenn Hoffman. His 3 run homer proved to be the difference in the game.

Gary Allenson was 2 for 3 with a walk.

John Tudor got the win by allowing 3 runs in 6 innings of work. He allowed no runs after the first inning.

The Bad:

None

The Ugly:

Jerry Remy was just 1 for 5 with a strikeout.

Dwight Evans was 0 for 3 but walked and scored a run.

Carl Yastrzemski was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Rick Miller was just 1 for 4.

Mark Clear earned the save but allowed a run in 3 innings of work.

Final Thoughts:

Good bounceback win for the Sox but that was a lot closer than it should have been. Neither the Jays nor the Sox accomplished much after the first inning and a few more runs by the offense would have made this game a laughter. Still, a win is a win and Tudor fought hard to earn it. He got rocked for 3 runs in the first and didn't give an inch the rest of the game. It was good to see Hoffman get that home run because it turned out to be the difference in the game. Clear allowing the run in the seventh made everyone groan but slamming the door in the final two innings was a good comeback. Some of the bats still need to get going but I'm sure they'll be there when the weather gets warmer. The key will be the pitching which has been solid recently. The Sox look to continue the momentum tomorrow afternoon against the Jays when they said Mike Torrez to the mound up against Jim Clancy of Toronto. The game begins at 2:05 PM at Fenway Park.
