Yankees Crush Sox, Take 2 of 3 (7/18/21)

Congratulations to the New York Yankees for their first convincing win of the season over the Boston Red Sox. It only took until July but for the first time the Yankees fully kicked the collective ass of the Red Sox in tonight's game. Jameson Taillon tossed 5 1/3 shutout innings and the Yankees bullpen surrendered just 1 run in the final innings. Meanwhile the Yankees beat around Martin Perez (7-6, 4.16 ERA) for 3 runs in 4 innings. The normally reliable Boston bullpen got hammered for 6 runs in 5 innings as the Yankees kept pouring it on. Darwinzon Hernandez and Yacksel Rios got their lunch handed to them, the bats were quiet and the Yankees took 2 out of 3 with a 9-1 win at Yankee Stadium.

Taillon began his dominance in the top of the first inning as Kike Hernandez flied out to left to start. Alex Verdugo struck out swinging and JD Martinez grounded out to third to end the inning. Perez got the ball in the bottom of the first inning and DJ LeMahieu grounded out to second to start. Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez both took strike three to end the inning.

Xander Bogaerts grounded out to short to start the top of the second before Rafael Devers walked. Hunter Renfroe popped up to second and Jarren Duran flied out to left to end the inning. The Yankees struck first in the bottom of the second as Gleyber Torres hit a home run all the way to Athens, Greece to give New York the lead. Chris Glittens struck out swinging, Trey Amburgey took strike three and Rougned Odor grounded out to second to end the inning with the Yankees up 1-0.
                                                            Torres jacks one

Christian Vazquez grounded out to short to start the top of the third before Christian Arroyo grounded out to first. Hernandez popped up to right to end the inning. The Yankees struck again in the bottom of the third as old friend Ryan LaMarre struck out swinging to start. Greg Allen got a seeing eye single to left and LeMahieu got a seeing eye single to right to put runners at the corners. Stanton beat out a double play ball to score Allen and Christian Arroyo did a split trying to catch the relay throw, pulling a groin. Arroyo had to be carried out on a stretcher, loaded into an ambulance and rushed to the local ICU as Bobby Dalbec came in to play first. Sanchez flied out to right to end the inning with the Sox down 2-0.
                                                          "Owowowoowow" - Arroyo

The Sox blew a rally in the top of the fourth inning as Verdugo lined out to right to start. Martinez popped up to first but Bogaerts doubled to left. Devers walked but Renfroe popped up to second to end the inning. Torres walked to start the bottom of the fourth but Glittens lined out to center and Amburgey banged into a double play to end the inning.

Brett Gardner came in for Amburgey to start the top of the fifth and LaMarre moved to right. Duran struck out swinging and LaMarre did the same split Arroyo did as he missed a double by Vazquez. LaMarre stayed in the game and Vazquez moved to third on a diving catch by Glittens on a pop up by Dalbec. Hernandez lined out to left to end the inning. The Yankees iced the game in the bottom of the fifth as Odor caught Dalbec asleep with a bunt single to start. LaMarre got a base hit to right and Renfroe inexplicably turned around and threw the ball into the bleachers for an error. That was it for Perez who'd be charged with 3 runs in just 4 plus innings. Garrett "The Lock" Whitlock came in to pitch and Allen hit a sac fly to center to score Odor. LeMahieu took strike three and Stanton grounded out to short to end the inning with the game all but over, 3-0 Yankees.
                                                              Perez doesn't last long

The Sox blew another rally in the top of the sixth as Verdugo struck out swinging to start. Martinez got a single to right and Bogaerts doubled him to third to chase Tailon. Chad Green came in and Devers struck out swinging. Renfroe grounded out to third to end the inning. The Lock dominated the bottom of the sixth as Sanchez grounded out to short to start. Torres and Glittens both struck out swinging to end the inning.

Duran struck out swinging to start the top of the seventh but Vazquez walked. Dalbec struck out swinging and Hernandez lined out to center to end the inning. Darwinzon Hernandez came in to crap his pants in the bottom of the seventh as Gardner singled to left to start and Odor hit a home run all the way to Jupiter to increase the lead. LaMarre walked and stole second before Allen walked to chase the incompetent Hernandez. Brandon Workman came in and LeMahieu flied out to right. Stanton flied out to center to move LaMarre to third before Allen stole second. Sanchez walked to load the bases and Torres walked to score LaMarre. Glittens walked to score Allen to ice the game. Gardner grounded out to first to end the inning with the Yankees ahead 7-0.
                                                          Yankees knock out the Sox

The Sox rallied too little, too late in the top of the eighth with Zack Britton on the mound. Verdugo struck out swinging but Martinez walked. Michael Chavis pinch hit for Bogaerts and struck out swinging but Rafael Devers walked to chase Britton. Lucas Luetge came in to pitch and Renfroe ripped a base hit to right to score Martinez. Devers took third when LaMarre threw the ball away but Duran grounded out to second to end the inning with the Sox down 7-1.
Sox get a run back on a bad throw

The Yankees tagged Yacksel Rios with Kevin Plawecki now behind the plate in the bottom of the eighth. Odor walked and LaMarre hit a home run all the way to Fenway Park where he used to play to wrap up the scoring. Allen flied out to right, LeMahieu grounded out to second and Stanton grounded out to short to end the inning with the Yankees up 9-1.
Where was that 5 years ago Ryan?

Aroldis Chapman came in to close out the top of the ninth and Plawecki flied out to center to start. Dalbec struck out swinging and Hernandez grounded out to short to end the game. The Yankees had won it 9-1.

Final Thoughts:

Kind of hard to win a game when you only get 5 hits in 9 innings. Jameson Taillon is not even close to Gerritt Cole so the Sox should be ashamed of themselves. Sox manager Alex Cora after the game said he was going to shake up the lineup because the Sox have now lost 3 series in a row going back to the Angels series before the break. Their lead against the Tampa Bay Rays has gone from 5.5 to 0.5 as they have caught fire again. Just like 2013, the Sox are sputtering in July while the Rays are surging. This is no time to panic as the Sox have fresh troops coming as Chris Sale is about to begin his rehab and Ryan Brasier is beginning to throw off a mound. Arroyo doing a split can't possibly be good for his hamstring so he may be out another 10 days. He's been a sparkplug at second base this season but this is the third time he's been hurt now. The Sox have two weeks until the trade deadline to make some moves to bolster this team. Right now they need another veteran bat off the bench like a 2018 Steve Pearce or 2004 Doug Mientkiewicz and another starter if Sale doesn't make it back the same. The Sox are in big trouble if they go down the stretch with the current rotation they have. The loss dropped the Sox to 56-38, 0.5 games in front of the Rays for first place in the AL East. The Sox now travel to Buffalo for a three game set with the Toronto Blue Jays. Nick Pivetta (7-4) takes on Ross Stripling of the Jays at 7:05 PM at Sahlen Field.
