Jays Crush Porcello, Sox (9/4/17)

Maybe its time to hit the panic button if you're a Boston Red Sox fan. After the New York Yankees stomped a mudhole in the Sox in New York, the Sox returned home to Fenway Park and got shelled by the last place, hapless Toronto Blue Jays. Rick Porcello (9-16, 4.67 ERA) continued his season long implosion and the Jays pounded the Sox for a 10-4 win.

Porcello took the mound in the top of the first inning and Steve Pearce led the game off with a double to left, advancing to third on the Josh Donaldson fly out to right. Justin Smoak walked although Jose Bautista whiffed. Kendrys Morales put the Jays up for good 5 batters into the game with a 3 run bomb to right. Kevin Pillar grounded out to third but the game was all but over already, 3-0 Jays.
                                              Backbackbackback....gone

Naturally Jays starter JA Happ dominated the bottom of the first inning as Eduardo Nunez led off with a harmless fly out to right. Mookie Betts hit a pathetic tapper back to Happ but somehow Andrew Benintendi walked. Hanley Ramirez swung at strike three a foot outside to end the inning.

Porcello ran into more trouble in the top of the second inning although Ryan Goins flied out to right to start. Darwin Barney grounded out to short but Raffy Lopez and Pearce hit back to back singles. Donaldson whiffed to end the inning. The Sox made a comeback in the bottom of the second inning mostly due to the Jays incompetence. Sam Travis doubled but Xander Bogaerts left him there with a ground out to short. Young walked and Vazquez squibbed a ball to Happ who threw wide, loading the bases. As usual the Sox screwed it up as Deven Marrero hit a swinging bunt so pathetic Lopez stepped on home plate for the force, barely having to move. Nunez shockingly singled home Travis and Young to cut the lead...only because Bautista let it drop rather than try to lunge for the ball. Betts then grounded out to second to end the inning but the Sox clawed back to make it 3-2.
                                         "I don't got it" - Bautista

Just as soon as the Red Sox got back into the game, Porcello gave it up again in the top of the third inning. Smoak popped up to short but the .200 hitting Bautista clobbered a solo home run to increase the lead. Morales popped up to first and Pillar grounded out to third to end the inning with the Jays up 4-2.
Porcello couldn't even get 97 year old Bautista out

This time there was no comeback in the bottom of the third inning. Benintendi whiffed and Ramirez flied out to right. Travis singled but Bogaerts grounded into a force to end the inning.

Porcello almost vomited up his intestines in the top of the fourth inning. Goins singled but was erased on the force by Barney. Lopez popped up to third but Pearce singled. Donaldson watched strike three go by to end the inning. The Sox failed to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Young grounded out to third and Vazquez looked at strike 3. Marrero walked but Nunez grounded out to short to end the inning.

Porcello finally pitched a clean inning in the top of the fifth. Smoak flied out to center, Bautista grounded out to third and Morales flied out to left to end the inning. The incompetent Sox offense failed again innthe bottom of the fifth after Betts doubled to bring the tying run to the plate. Benintendi popped up to third and Betts went to third on the line out by Ramirez. Travis flied out to right to end the inning. What a waste.

Porcello finally imploded in the top of the sixth inning. Pillar flied out but Goins singled. Barney doubled as pitching coach Carl Willis sprinted to the mound to remind Rick that reruns of Kojak were on in the dugout. Rick got so excited he gave up a two-run home run to .200 hitting Lopez. That was it for Porcello who crapped his pants AGAIN when the team needed a good outing. 5 1/3 innings and 7 runs allowed, terrible. Brandon Workman took over and struck out Pearce although Donaldson walked. Smoak looked at strike three to end the inning with the Jays ahead 7-2.
From hero to zero in one year

The Sox tried to fight back in the bottom of the sixth although Bogaerts and Young both flied out to right. Vazquez and Marrero singled to chase Happ. Dominic Leone came in and Nunez singled home Vazquez. The incompetent Betts whiffed again to end the inning but it was now 7-3.
                                                Nunez doing what he can

Austin Maddox was summoned to pitch the top of the seventh inning. Bautista looked at strike three and Morales popped up to short. Pillar flied out to right to end the inning. Somehow the Sox tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Benintendi walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, then advanced to third on the single by Ramirez. Sox manager John Farrell sent in Mitch Moreland to pinch hit for Travis and acting Jays manager Demarlo Hale countered with lefty Aaron "Fruit" Loup. Moreland beat out a double play ball to score Benintendi. Right hander Ryan Tepera replaced Loup and with a chance to get back in the game...Bogaerts struck out on a pitch that damn near went to the backstop. Jackie Bradley Jr pinch hit for Young...and grounded out to end the inning. The Sox had cut the lead to 7-4.

Fernando Abad was unleashed to pitch the top of the eighth inning. Goins and Barney both grounded out to third before Lopez struck out to end the inning. Once again the Sox got men on but the wrong men came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth. Vazquez grounded out to second but pinch hitter Brock Holt doubled. He was stranded as Nunez struck out and Betts flied out to right to end the inning. Bogaerts and Betts couldnt hit the ball out of their hands at this point.

Matt Barnes came in to pitch the top of the ninth and he poured gas on the fire. Barnes got both Pearce and Donaldson to strike out but Smoak blasted a solo home run to put the game out of reach. Barnes fell apart as Bautista and Morales hit back to back doubles then Pillar singled in Morales. Sox manager John Farrell grabbed a bat and ran out of the dugout like a deranged barbarian, chasing Barnes all the way out of the park. Roenis Elias, who hadn't been seen all year, suddenly jumped out of the stands in uniform and onto the field before Carl Willis could bring in someone else. Goins walked but Barney whiffed to end the inning. Welcome back Elias....too bad it was 10-4
                                                      Welcome back Elias

Mercifully this disaster ended in the bottom of the ninth with Tim Mayza on the mound. Benintendi lined out to center before Ramirez struck out. Moreland whiffed to end the game. The Jays had humiliated the Red Sox 10-4.

Jackass of The Night is Rick Porcello. The Sox were reeling coming out of New York and he crapped his pants when the team desperately needed him. He failed to get out of the sixth inning and gave up seven runs including three home runs.
Hang your head in shame, Jackass

Hanley Ramirez was just 1 for 5.

Mitch Moreland was 0 for 2 but drove in a run.

Final Thoughts:

EVERYBODY PANIC! Well...not really but it could be time to. After the Sox got their brains beat in by New York, coming home to Fenway and getting their brains beat in by the last place Blue Jays is pretty embarassing. Rick Porcello, Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts have totally puked on themselves this season. All 3 are apart of the reason the Sox are crumbling and its a shame. A great season by any one of them would probably have the Sox 10 games up by now. As it is, the loss drops the Sox to 77-61, 2.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. Tomorrow night Eduardo Rodriguez looks to finally win a game as he's matched up with Marco Estrada. The gane starts at 7:10 PM at Fenway Park.
