Tanaka Shuts Down Sox, Yankees Win (9/2/17)

Before the game Jackie Bradley Jr was activated from the Disabled List. Tzu-Wei Lin was recalled from Pawtucket. More troops are on the way tomorrow but getting JBJ and Lin back are huge for the stretch run given Pedroia's balky knee and JBJ's wizardry in center.
                                                                    IN

As for the game, what an epic disaster. The Sox had a great chance to bury the Yankees once and for all today but instead pissed down their collective legs. Drew Pomeranz (14-5, 3.36 ERA) didn't have it and the Sox offense once again got shut down by Masahiro Tanaka. The Yankees won the game and the season series with a 5-1 victory at Fenway Park.
"That damn Tanaka did it again"

Tanaka began the top of the first by getting Eduardo Nunez to ground out on a tapper in front of the plate. Andrew Benintendi drew a walk and moved to second on the force by Mookie Betts. Mitch Moreland grounded out to second to end the inning. Pomeranz started his day by buzzing Brett Gardner up and in before getting him to ground out to a diving Tzu-Wei Lin at second. Jackie Bradley Jr made a running basket catch on Aaron Hicks, nearly cleaning out Betts. Rafael Devers made a great play on a hard hit ball by Gary Sanchez but Mitch Moreland did a cannonball on first base instead of field the throw and Sanchez motored around to second on the error. Aaron Judge grounded out to third to end the inning.

Hanley Ramirez flied out to the right field wall to begin the top of the second inning. Devers was retired on a pathetic swinging bunt and Christian Vazquez struck out to end the inning. The Yankees struck first in the bottom of the second inning although Didi Gregorious struck out to start. Chase Headley then smashed a solo home run to left to give the Yankees the lead. Matt Holliday popped up to short but Greg Bird singled up the middle. Ronald Torreyes walked and Gardner beat out a totally lazy throw by Devers to load the bases. Hicks hit a 3-2 shot to Lin but unlike Devers, he threw to first on time to end the inning. The Yankees were up 1-0.
                                             Headley makes it 1-0 Yankees

As usual Tanaka dominated the Sox in the top of the third as Jackie Bradley Jr popped up to second to start the top of the third. Lin waived at a pitch in the dirt and Nunez grounded out to short to end the inning. Pomeranz had lost the feel for his curveball and the Yankees knew it in the bottom of the third. Sanchez hit a smoking line drive but JBJ ran it down before Judge was rung up for strike three on a check swing. Gregorious popped up to short to end the inning.

Tanaka dominated the top of the fourth inning although Benintendi got a lucky seeing eye single to start. Betts flied out harmlessly to center and Benintendi moved to second on a groundout by Moreland. Ramirez then tried to pull a pitch headed into the dirt on the outside and grounded to short to end the inning. Pomeranz matched Tanaka in the in the bottom of the fourth although Headley singled to start Holliday flied out to center and Bird struck out before Torreyes whiffed to end the inning.

The Sox once again were completely incompetent in the top of the fifth inning. Devers got a lucky single but Vazquez missed badly on a hit and run, getting Devers thrown out by a mile trying to steal. Vazquez ended up grounding out meekly although JBJ stroked a single to center. Lin didn't even swing at a meatball right down the middle to end the inning. The absolutely pathetic offense couldn't hit CC Sabathia or Tanaka.
Sox didn't come to play today

Pomeranz did what he could in the bottom of the fifth by getting Gardner to fly out to center to start. Hicks grounded to second but Sanchez fisted a single to right. Judge flied out to the wall in left to end the inning.

The Sox tried to get something going when Nunez doubled off the left field wall to start the top of the sixth. Benintendi swung a a pitch in the dirt but at least the groundout to second moved Nunez to third. The Yankees threw up on themselves when a passed ball on Sanchez allowed Nunez to score the tying run. Betts walked but Moreland was robbed by a diving Torreyes of a single. Tanaka got away with another meatball as Hanley hit a 400 foot out to center to end the inning, although it was a tie game 1-1.

Pomeranz returned for the bottom of the sixth and immediately crapped his pants. Gregorius walked and motored all the way to third on the single by Headley. Holliday cleared the bases with a 3 run homer to put the game away. Bird looked at strike three and that was it for Pomeranz. The Sox needed Drew to have a great start to counter Tanaka and he failed miserably.
                                             Drew "Damn I sure suck"

Brandon Workman relieved Pomeranz and got Torreyes to pop up to first. Gardner struck out to end the inning but the game was over, 4-1 Yankees.

Tanaka cruised in the top of the seventh inning as Devers grounded out to second, Vazquez popped to second and JBJ grounded out to second to end the inning. Once again the Sox couldn't touch Tanaka and its beyond pathetic.
Kryptonite to the Red Sox, batting practice to everyone else

Workman pooped his pants in the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Jacoby Ellsbury tripled and Sanchez singled off the glove of Devers to increase the lead. Judge looked at strike three and that was it for Workman. Sox manager John Farrell waived the white flag by bringing in Fernando Abad. Gregorious popped up to third and Headley flied out to end the inning with the Yankees up 5-1.

Lin singled to open the top of the eighth inning to chase Tanaka after 7 outstanding innings. David Robertson replaced him and Nunez flied out to left. Benintendi looked at strike three but Betts beat out an infield single. Moreland grounded out to end the inning. Austin Maddox was brought in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and got Holliday to fly out to center to start. Bird whiffed and Torreyes popped up to short to end the inning.

Dellin Betances came in and blew away the lifeless Sox to end the game. Ramirez, Devers and Vazquez all struck out in short order to end the game. The Yankees had won it 5-1.

Jackass of The Night is Drew Pomeranz. He's been having great starts all year and one more would have buried the Yankees for good. Instead he crapped his pants and let the Yankees right back into the season by failing to go 6 innings and giving up 4 runs.
Jackass of the Night is Pomeranz

The Good:

Andrew Benintendi was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Mookie Betts was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Jackie Bradley Jr was 1 for 3.

Tzu-Wei Lin was 1 for 3.

Fernando Abad got the final 2 outs of the 7th.

Austin Maddox pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Bad:

Mitch Moreland was 0 for 4.

Hanley Ramirez was 0 for 4.

Christian Vazquez was 0 for 4.

Brandon Workman allowed a run in his inning of work.

The Ugly:

Eduardo Nunez was just 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Rafael Devers was just 1 for 4 with an error.

Final Thoughts:

That sucked big time. The Sox had a chance to step on the Yankees throats with Chris Sale looming tomorrow night and instead they gave them hope. Once again for the 10th time this season the Sox failed to score against the Yankees. Of their 10 losses against New York, they never scored more than 4 runs. The loss dropped the Sox to 77-59, 4.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. Tomorrow night the Sox lose to Luis Severino with the tiring and exhausted Chris Sale going for the Red Sox. The beating starts at 7:30 PM.
