Angels Blank Sox (4/12/24)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made a roster move. Isaiah Campbell was placed on the 15 Day Injured List and to take his place, the Sox called up the hapless Bobby Dalbec. Why? I don't know. Everything stinks.

As for the game, the lifeless Red Sox once again laid an egg at home as they fell to the Los Angeles Angels. The Sox committed as many errors as they had hits against starter Reid Detmers and the Angels bullpen. Tanner Houck (2-1, 2.04 ERA) got smacked around for TWELVE hits and 7 runs with the dagger being a three run bomb by Taylor Ward in the sixth inning. David Hamilton, Triston Casas and Ceddanne Rafaela all had errors as the Sox got booed out of the building 7-0 at Fenway Park. How many runs did the Sox score Dean Wormer?

The Angels wasted no time getting to Houck in the top of the first inning as Anthony Rendon ripped a base hit to right to start. Nolan Schanuel got hit with a pitch and Mike Trout hit a routine double play ball to David Hamilton who naturally threw over the head of Pablo Reyes at second for an error to load the bases. Taylor Ward hit a hard grounder to Reyes who bobbled it but still got the force at second to score Rendon. Aaron Hicks ripped a base hit to center to score Schanuel and a wild pitch moved both runners over. Brandon Drury grounded out to short but Ward scored to increase the lead. Luis Rengifo lined out to center to end the inning with the Angels up 3-0.
                                                             Keystone Kops

Detmers got the ball in the bottom of the first and Jarren Duran flied out to left to start. Reyes atoned for dropping the ball by getting a base hit to center but Tyler O'Neill grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Logan O'Hoppe grounded out to third to start the top of the second but Triston Casas dropped a pop up in foul territory by Zach Neto for an error. Neto flied out to right anyway and Rendon popped up to Casas who held on this time to end the inning. Casas walked to start the bottom of the second but Dalbec banged into a double play. Masataka Yoshida singled to left but Connor Wong struck out swinging to end the inning. The Sox would get just one hit the rest of the game.

The Angels struck again in the top of the third as Schanuel hit a roller past Reyes for a base hit to start. Trout hit a bullet to Hamilton and Ward lined out to a running Duran, but Hicks singled to right. Drury got a base hit to center and Rafaela tried coming home with the ball but Houck bobbled the throw and it skipped away, allowing Schanuel to score on the error. Fenway started booing like crazy and Rengifo struck out swinging to end the inning with the Angels up 4-0.
                                                       Another disastrous error

The Sox failed to respond in the bottom of the third as Rafaela struck out swinging to start. Hamilton grounded out to first but Duran doubled to left. Reyes grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Angels poured it on in the top of the fourth although O'Hoppe grounded out to short to start. Neto doubled to center and Rendon singled in the hole at short to put runners at the corners. Schanuel singled off the centerfield wall to score Neto for another un. Trout struck out swinging to end the inning with the Angels up 5-0.
                                                             Another big hit for LA

O'Neill took strike three to start the bottom of the fourth and Casas popped up to third. Dalbec grounded out to short to end the inning.

Hicks lined out to left to start the top of the fifth and Drury lined out to center. Rengifo singled to right and O'Hoppe hit a ground rule double into the right field stands, but Neto flied out to center to end the inning. Yoshida struck out swinging to start the bottom of the fifth and Wong grounded out to short. Rafaela lined out to left to end the inning.

The Angels finished off Houck in the top of the sixth although Rendon popped up to short to begin. Schanuel grounded out to second but Trout got a base hit to left. Ward hit a home run all the way to the Bayou of Louisiana to chase Houck. Tanner had nothing as he allowed 12 hits and seven runs in just 5 2/3 innings. Brennan Bernardino came in and got Hicks on a squibber in front of the plate to end the inning with the Angels up 7-0.
                                                   Houck was batting practice

Hamilton struck out swinging to open the bottom of the sixth but Duran drew a walk. Reyes flied out to right and O'Neill struck out swinging to end the inning.

Drury took strike three to start the top of the seventh before Rengifo lined out to left. O'Hoppe struck out swinging to end the inning. Casas struck out swinging to start the bottom of the seventh and that was it for Detmers after 6 1/3 shutout innings. Luis Garcia froze Dalbec for strike three and Yoshida flied out to right to end the inning.

Chase Anderson came in to pitch the top of the eighth and Neto popped up to second to start. Rendon went down hacking and Schanuel grounded out to short to end the inning. Jose Cisnero came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Wong popped up to first to start. Rafaela grounded out to short and Hamilton struck out swinging to end the inning.

Anderson struck out Trout swinging to open the top of the ninth and Ward flied out to center. Hicks grounded out to second to end the inning. Hunter Strickland came in to close out the bottom of the ninth and Duran lined out to second to start. Reyes struck out swinging and O'Neill hit one up the elevator shaft to end the game. The Angels had won it 7-0.
                                                        Angels win

Jackass of the Night is Tanner Houck. He got no help from his defense but he still allowed 7 runs off 12 hits while striking out just two batters.
                                                    Houck you Jackass!

The Good:

Jarren Duran was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Masataka Yoshida was 1 for 3.

Brennan Bernardino tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Chase Anderson tossed two scoreless innings.

The Bad:

Bobby Dalbec was 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

Connor Wong was 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

Ceddanne Rafaela was 0 for 3 with an error and a strikeout.

David Hamilton was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts and an error.

The Ugly:

Pablo Reyes was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

Triston Casas was 0 for 2 with a strikeout and an error but walked.

Final Thoughts:

We're only 14 games into the season and already people are ready for the paper bags over their heads. The offense has been downright awful but the defense is the laughingstock of baseball. You have guys playing out of position, over their heads and poorly and its reflecting at the plate as well. Houck looked mortal for the first time all season but even if he gave up a run in seven innings the Sox were still going to lose. Still, they were down 3-0 before they even stepped to the plate and not even the Mookie Sox came back from too many deficits like that. The bottom line is the Trevor Story injury threw this team completely down a spiral and even before, the team was simply not built for success. Relying on cheap 4A players like Abreu, Hamilton, Valdez, Wong, etc isn't going to be the answer moving forward. But, John Henry doesn't care so why should fans? The Sox look to snap their four game losing streak tomorrow afternoon against the Angels. The rumor is the Sox are calling up Cooper Criswell to make the start for the Sox against Griffin Canning of the Angels. The game begins at 4:10 PM at Fenway Park.
