Gil, Yankees Blank Sox (4/21/26)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made a roster move. As expected, Sonny Gray was placed on the 15 Day Injured List with a bad hamstring and the Sox called up relief pitcher Tyler Samaniego to take his place. Don't know why the Sox are adding another reliever instead of calling up a starter like Peyton Tolle or Jake Bennett, but nothing's gone right this season. Why should this?
                                                                      OUT
                                                                      IN

The good news was the Boston Bruins defeated the Buffalo Sabres in Game 2 of their first round NHL playoff series but the bad news was the Boston Celtics lost Game 2 of their first round NBA playoff series to the Philadelphia Sixers and the New York Yankees shut out a lifeless Boston Red Sox team. Luis Gil held the Sox to just 2 measly hits in 6 1/3 innings. Meanwhile Connelly Early (1-1, 2.88 ERA) once again ran out of gas in the sixth inning, leaving trailing 3-0. The Yankees got a run against Jack Anderson as the Sox bats did nothing against the Yankees bullpen. It all added up to a 4-0 win by the Yankees at Fenway Park. How many runs did the Sox get, John Cena?

Early got the ball in the top of the first inning and Amed Rosario grounded out to short to start. Aaron Judge grounded out to short and Ben Rice took strike three to end the inning. Gil got the ball in the bottom of the first and Roman Anthony took strike three to start. Willson Contreras got a base hit to left and moved to second on the Masataka Yoshida grounder to second. Wilyer Abreu popped up to third to end the inning.

The Yankees ended the game in the top of the second when Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run into the Charles River to put the Yankees up for good. Cody Bellinger grounded out to second but Randal Grichuk got a base hit to left. Jazz Chisholm singled to left but Jose Caballero grounded into a double play to end the inning with the game over 1-0 Yankees.
                                                                  Yankees strike first

The Sox rolled over in the bottom of the second as Trevor Story flied out to center to start. Ceddane Rafaela grounded out to short but somehow Marcelo Mayer hit a ground rule double into the left field stands. Naturally Caleb Durbin struck out swinging to end the inning.

Austin Wells lined out to left to start the top of the third and Rosario grounded out to short. Judge grounded out to third to end the inning. Carlos Narvaez lined out to right to start the bottom of the third but somehow Anthony walked. Naturally Contreras flied out to left and Yoshida flied out to center to end the inning.

Rice was hit with a pitch to start the top of the fourth but Stanton struck out swinging. Bellinger grounded into a double play to end the inning. Abreu grounded out to first to start the bottom of the fourth and Story grounded out to third. Rafaela flied out to right to end the inning.

Grichuk grounded out to second to open the top of the fifth and Chisholm struck out swinging. Caballero singled in the hole at short but Wells grounded back to the mound to end the inning. Mayer was plunked to start the bottom of the fifth but naturally Durbin grounded into a double play. Narvaez flied out to center to end the inning.

The Yankees iced it in the top of the sixth as Rosario walked to start. Judge walked but Rice struck out swinging. Stanton doubled to center to clear the bases and Bellinger walked to chase Early. Once again Early ran out of gas being charged with 3 runs in just 5 1/3 innings. Jack Anderson came in and Grichuk got Stanton thrown out at third on a grounder to Durbin.  Chisholm caught the Sox asleep with a bunt single down the third base line to load the bases but Caballero was rung up for strike three to end the inning with the Sox down 3-0.
                                                            Early got no run support.

The Sox rolled over and died in the bottom of the sixth as Anthony lined out to short to start. Contreras popped up to first and Yoshida grounded out to short to end the inning.

Wells flied out to center to start the top of the seventh and Rosario grounded out to third. Judge ripped a base hit to left but Rice took strike three to end the inning. Ryan McMahon came in for Rosario to start the bottom of the seventh and Abreu flied out to center. Somehow Story and Rafaela drew back to back walks to chase Gil after 6 1/3 shutout innings. Brent Headrick came in to face Mayer but Sox manager Alex Cora defied all logic by pinch hitting Andruw Monasterio. Monasterio flied out to right and Durbin took strike three to end the inning.

Stanton flied out to center to start the top of the eighth but Bellinger singled to left. Grichuk doubled to center to score Bellinger to wrap up the scoring. Tyler Samaniego came in to pitch to Chisholm and he hit a bullet to Contreras. Willson doubled off Grichuk at second to end the inning with the Yankees up 4-0.
Grichuk about to join the Sons of Anarchy

Trent Grisham took over for Grichuk for the bottom of the eighth and Narvaez singled to right. Tim Hill came in to pitch to Anthony and Roman grounded out to short to move Carlos to second. Contreras grounded out to third to end the inning.

Caballero struck out swinging to start the top of the ninth but Wells singled to right. McMahon struck out swinging but Judge walked. Rice took strike three to end the inning. David Bednar came in to close out the bottom of the ninth and Abreu grounded back to the mound to start. Story grounded out to third but Rafaela beat out a roller to third. Jarren Duran pinch hit for Monasterio and struck out swinging to end the game. The Yankees had won 4-0.
                                                             Yankees win

Jackass of the Night is a tough one because the whole offense took the night off. Still, Caleb Durbin failed with a runner on second, grounded into a double play and took strike three with two men on.
                                                       Rally killing Jackass

The Good:

Ceddanne Rafaela was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Marcelo Mayer singled and was hit with a pitch.

Carlos Narvaez was 1 for 3.

Tyler Samaniego tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Bad:

Masataka Yoshida was 0 for 4.

Wilyer Abreu was 0 for 4.

Andruw Monasterio was 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.

Jarren Duran struck out as a pinch hitter.

The Ugly:

Roman Anthony was 0 for 3 with a strikeout but walked.

Willson Contreras was just 1 for 4.

Trevor Story was 0 for 3 but walked.

Connelly Early was the hard luck loser tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs off 5 hits and 3 walks.

Jack Anderson allowed a run in 2 innings.

Final Thoughts:

Its getting ridiculous as this point but there might be some changes coming. Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner have been spotted at Fenway more times in the last week than they've been in years. They're seeing their failure first hand and maybe they'll make a change. Its clear that GM Craig Breslow failed big time to put a roster together and its clear as day Alex Cora has totally lost it. This isn't the 2018 or 2022 Red Sox, this is a brand new team with younger players that he's not getting the most out of. Luis Gil was considered the easier of the three pitchers the Sox were going to face and they look completely helpless. Gil also induced very few swing and misses so the Sox just kept beating the ball in the dirt. It raises questions on what exactly the coaching staff does game to game if the players consistently get shut down by mediocre pitchers. Not to mention on what planet is it a good idea to pinch hit Mayer for Monasterio. It shows Cora has either zero confidence in the number 4 overall pick or is a slave to analytics. Either way its an extremely bad look and toxic toward Mayer's development. Its an entire organizational failure from top to bottom and maybe hitting rock bottom will make some changes. If the Yankees shut down the Sox the next two games, someone has to go. Cora, Breslow, Pete Fatse, all of them, somebody. The Sox look to buck the trend tomorrow night when Ranger Suarez (1-1, 3.22 ERA) takes on Yankees ace Max Fried. The game begins at 6:45 PM at Fenway Park.

Tigers Hammer Crochet, Sox (4/19/26)

The good news was the Boston Celtics defeated the Philadelphia Sixers in Game 1 of their first round NBA playoff series but not only did the Boston Bruins choke Game 1 of their first round NHL playoff series to the Buffalo Sabres, but the Boston Red Sox lost to the Detroit Tigers. T Boston Red Sox 2026 season might be over before it really started as Garrett Crochet (2-3, 7.88 ERA) once again got smashed around. This time it was the Detroit Tigers that blitzed him for 5 runs in just 5 innings. Jahmi Jones and Dillon Dingler both homered in the fifth inning to put the Tigers up 5-1. As usual the Boston bats were silenced, this time it was Framber Valdez that did the honors. Framber held the impotent lineup to just 3 hits and a run in 6 innings. The Tigers got a run against Jack Anderson, the Sox got a Caleb Durbin rbi in the ninth and the Sox dropped another one 6-2 at Fenway Park.
                                                        This season in a nutshell

Crochet got tagged out of the gate to start the top of the first inning as Jahmai Jones lined out to right to start. Gleyber Torres took strike three but Matt Vierling doubled to left. Story struck out swinging to start the bottom of the fourth before Abreu flied out to right. Rafaela doubled to center but Durbin flied out to center to end the inning.

Crochet fell apart in the top of the fifth as Lee struck out swinging to start. Baez struck out swinging but Jones hit a home run all the way to Kenya to put the Tigers up for good. Torres walked, Vierling singled to left and Dingler hit the backbreaking home run into the Charles River to ice it. Greene got a base hit to center and Perez grounded out to second to end the inning with the Tigers up 5-1. Crochet crashed and burned in the fifth inning allowing 5 runs in 5 innings.
                                                           Sox have a Crochet problem

The Sox gave up in the bottom of the fifth as Narvaez flied out to center to start the bottom of the fifth and Kiner took strike three. Anthony grounded out to short to end the inning.

Ryan Watson came in to pitch the top of the sixth and Torkelson lined out to right to start. Lee grounded out to third but Baez got a base hit to left. Kerry Carpenter pinch hit for Jones and got a base hit to right, but Torres flied out to right to end the inning. Monasterio struck out swinging to begin the bottom of the sixth and Contreras flied out to left. Story walked but Abreu flied out to left to end the inning.

Jack Anderson came in to pitch the top of the seventh and Vierling grounded out to third to start. Dingler flied out to center and Greene grounded out to third to end the inning. Kyle Finnegan came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and Rafaela was rung up for strike three to start. Durbin popped up to second but Narvaez doubled to left. Marcelo Mayer pinch hit for Kiner and popped up to third to end the inning.

Perez popped up to second to start the top of the eighth and Torkelson flied out to right. Lee flied out to center to end the inning. Will Vest came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Anthony walked to start. Monasterio grounded into a double play and Contreras grounded out to third to end the inning. The Tigers added insult to injury in the top of the ninth as Baez singled to left to start. Carpenter walked and Torres got a base hit to right to score Baez. Vierling grounded into a double play but Dingler got a base hit to left. Torres tried to score but Anthony gunned him down at home to end the inning with the Tigers up 6-2.
                                                          Fair ball

Old friend Connor Seabold came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and Story struck out swinging to start. Abreu beat out a roller to third but Rafaela struck out swinging. Durbin doubled off the Monster to score Abreu and Masataka Yoshida pinch hit for Narvaez. Yoshida grounded out to second to end the game. The Tigers had won 6-2.
                                                           Tigers win

Jackass of the Night is Garrett Crochet. He got rocked for 5 runs in just 5 innings to put the Sox in a hole they couldn't climb out of.
                                                             Jackass Crochet

The Good:

Trevor Story was 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Wilyer Abreu was 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

Carlos Narvaez was 1 for 3.

Ryan Watson tossed a scoreless sixth inning.

The Bad:

Andruw Monasterio was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Masataka Yoshida was 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa was 0 for 2 with a strikeout.

Marcelo Mayer was 0 for 1 at the plate.

The Ugly:

Roman Anthony was 0 for 3 with a strikeout but walked.

Willson Contreras was just 1 for 4 with a strikeout but hit a home run.

Ceddanne Rafaela was just 1 for 4 with a hat trick of 3 strikeouts.

Caleb Durbin was just 1 for 4 with an rbi.

Jack Anderson allowed a run in 3 innings of work.

Final Thoughts:

This season can't end fast enough and we're only 3 weeks into it. If Crochet is actually hurt the season is over. They have no chance with this offense as it is but if the rotation falls apart, then forget about it. Ranger Suarez and Connelly Early look good but if Crochet, Brayan Bello and Sonny Gray fall apart, they'll be in last place by Memorial Day. Crochet was touching 96 on the gun so velocity wasn't the problem, maybe he's tipping his pitches. Either way something is seriously wrong and its very concerning. As usual the Sox bats did nothing and its getting critical there as well. The Sox have scored four runs in 3 games and fans are wondering what can be done. Fire the manager? Trade someone? Demote someone? This team looks lifeless and directionless and it doesn't seem to be any hope in sight. The worst part...its only April. The Sox look to salvage the series tomorrow morning on Patriots Day Monday. Sonny Gray goes for the Sox against Jack Flaherty of the Tigers. The game begins at 11:00 AM at Fenway Park.

Twins Embarrass Red Sox (4/14/26)

Before the game the Boston Red Sox made roster moves. Tyler Samaniego was optioned back to Worcester and the Sox called up 26 year old right handed pitcher Jack Anderson to make his ML debut. He was taken in the Rule 5 Draft at the end of 2024 and spent the majority of last season in Portland. Congratulations Jack.
                                                               OUT
                                                                      IN

As for the game, this is getting toxic real fast. Its bad enough to be a bad team, its another to be completely unlikeable. The Sox got embarrassed by the Minnesota Twins on and off the field for the second straight day. Max Abel came into the game with an ERA over 8 and shut out the Sox while striking out 10 in 7 innings. Meanwhile Sonny Gray (2-1, 4.43 ERA) got lit up for 5 runs in just 4 lousy innings. Carlos Narvaez struck out four times and looked completely interested while Jarren Duran flipped a fan the bird while going 0 for 4 himself. Apart from the ML debut of Jack Anderson, this team has gone to hell in a hand basket as the Twins blanked the Sox 6-0. How many runs did the Sox score John Cena?

Abel got the ball in the top of the first inning and Roman Anthony grounded out to second to start. Caleb Durbin grounded out to third and Masataka Yoshida got a base hit to right. Willson Contreras took strike three to end the inning. The Twins wasted no time getting to Gray in the bottom of the first as Byron Buxton singled to center to start. Buxton took second on a balk but Trevor Larnach was frozen for strike three. It looked like Buxton was thrown out at home on a base hit to center by Luke Keaschall, but Twins manager Derek Shelton challenged Buxton was safe. Sure enough, replays showed Buxton was safe to put the Twins up for good just three batters into the first inning. Josh Bell forced Keaschall at second and Matt Wallner grounded back to the mound to end the inning with the Twins up 1-0.
                                                          Keaschall drives in a run

The Sox failed to respond in the top of the second as Wilyer Abreu struck out swinging to start. Trevor Story struck out swinging and Jarren Duran also swung at air to end the inning. Victor Caratini flied out to right to start the bottom of the second but Kody Clemens got a base hit to center. Clemens promptly stole second and took third on the Brooks Lee grounder to second. Tristan Gray grounded out to third to end the inning.

Carlos Narvaez took strike three to start the top of the third and Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded out to first. Anthony got a base hit to center but Durbin's bunt attempt to the mound failed to end the inning. The Twins struck again in the bottom of the third as Buxton hit a home run all the way to North Dakota to increase the lead. Larnach lined out to center but Keaschall singled to left. Bell grounded out to second but Wallner walked. Caratini was hit with a pitch but Clemens grounded out to first to end the inning with the Twins up 2-0.
                                                               Home run Buxton

Yoshida grounded out to second to start the top of the fourth but Contreras was hit with a pitch. Abreu flied out to left and Contreras took second on a passed ball. Story grounded out to third to end the inning. The Twins struck again in the bottom of the fourth as Lee hit a home run all the way to the Klingon Homeworld to start. Gray got a base hit to right, Buxton singled to left and Larnach singled to right. Gray and Buxton both scored but Larnach was out at second on the throw. Keaschall grounded out to second and Bell did the same to end the inning. That was it for Gray who was hammered for 5 runs in just 4 innings off 9 hits and a walk.
                                                           Gray was garbage

Duran grounded out to second to start the top of the fifth then gave some heckling fan the one finger salute. Narvaez struck out swinging but Kiner got a base hit to center. Anthony took 3 straight pitches right down the middle to end the inning.
                                                     The Steve Austin special

Jack Anderson made his ML debut in the bottom of the fifth with Andruw Monasterio in for Contreras. Wallner struck out swinging before Caratini also went down hacking. Clemens struck out swinging to end the inning as even Twins fans gave Anderson a standing O.
                                                          Welcome to Boston, Jack

Durbin grounded out to short to start the top of the sixth but Yoshida got a base hit to left. Somehow Monasterio challenged a strike three pitch right down the middle and got laughed at. Abreu grounded out to first to end the inning. Lee lined out to left to start the bottom of the sixth before Gray struck out swinging. Buxton then hit yet another home run to wrap up the scoring before Larnach walked. Keaschall flied out to right to end the inning with the Twins up 6-0.
                                                           Buxton does it again

Story struck out swinging to start the top of the seventh and Duran grounded out to first. Narvaez struck out swinging to end the inning. Max Abel had held the Sox scoreless through seven innings with 10 strikeouts, pathetic. Bell grounded out to first to start the bottom of the seventh and Wallner grounded out to second. Caratini grounded out to second to end the inning.

Taylor Rogers came in to pitch the top of the eighth and Kiner flied out to left to start. Anthony doubled to left and Durbin walked, but Yoshida flied out to left. Monasterio took stirke three to end the inning. Aroldis Chapman came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and Clemens was plunked to start. Lee and Gray struck out swinging before Buxton took strike three to end the inning.

Cole Sands came in to close out the top of the ninth and Abreu grounded out to first to start. Story singled in the hole at short but Duran lined out to center. Narvaez took strike three to end the game. The Twins had won it 6-0.
                                                             Twins win

Jackass of the Night is Sonny Gray. He put the Sox in a 5-0 hole they couldn't climb out of.
                                                           Sonny Jackass

The Good:

Roman Anthony was 2 for 4.

Masataka Yoshida was 2 for 4.

Willson Contreras was hit with a pitch before leaving the game.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa was 1 for 3.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The Bad:

Andruw Monasterio was 0 for 2 with 2 strikeouts.

Wilyer Abreu was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Jarren Duran was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Carlos Narvaez was 0 for 4 with a golden sombrero of 4 strikeouts.

The Ugly:

Caleb Durbin was 0 for 3 but walked.

Trevor Story was just 1 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Jack Anderson allowed a run in 3 innings of work.

Final Thoughts:

Its one thing to be a bad team, its another to be toxic. Between the team looking totally checked out, the coaching staff unable to get them to play harder or Duran flipping the people the bird, this is quite an unlikeable team. Red Sox hitting coach Pete Fatse is under fire for the Sox being consistently blinded by bad pitchers and Sox manager Alex Cora is under fire for benching, starting and pinch hitting guys at random. The problem is poor roster construction with 5 outfielders and the refusal to trade one of them for better personnel. Gray looked like garbage today but he was due for a stinker. A pitcher like Gray will be what Nick Pivetta once was, gotta take the good with the bad. The problem is other starters have to step up and few have to this point. The less said of this disaster, the better. The Sox look to avoid a sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Twins when Connelly Early (0-0, 2.63 ERA) takes on Woods Richardson of Minnesota. The game begins at 1:40 PM eastern time at Target Field.
